purpleflame1257··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Finishing up Wolf Hall right now. I quite enjoy it.
purpleflame1257··on Claude partial outage
Yeah, Fable 5.1 just seems Pareto-dominated. Opus 5.5 is the first model that feels like a step change for me, personally since like 4.6
purpleflame1257··on 1 in 8 cancer cases worldwide are caused by infections, study finds
Recent demographic shifts have given rise to a vocally anti-alcohol contingent in large parts of the Western world. There's substantial motivated reasoning.
purpleflame1257··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
There were literally toddlers walking into the fire they were so unattrnded
purpleflame1257··on AirPods 5
Now John Apple.
purpleflame1257··on Generating the P3 Tiling
Famously where Penrose got the idea from in the first place.
purpleflame1257··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
If I might ask, where do you live? In America a woman was arrested for letting her child walk in her own neighborhood. https://people.com/va-mom-convicted-for-letting-5-year-old-w...
purpleflame1257··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
The same authors saw some evidence of development problems among the children in the same cohort. https://www.nber.org/papers/w21571
purpleflame1257··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
Every SDXL image uses something like 0.5 Watt-hour. That means that 2000 sdxl images uses about 30 cents of electricity. If we multiply that by 30x for video (a fair assumption for models like minimax H3, which take that much longer to make video), that means you get almost 700 5-second videos for a dollar of electricity, which is about a kilo of carbon dioxide. More or less depending on where your electricity comes from.
purpleflame1257··on Benchmarking Qwen3.8 27B quantizations: 4-bit holds up, 1-bit collapses
There's a real hole here at Q3. A critical breakpoint here is sub 16-GB cards, which covers the 5080, 5070 Ti, 5060ti, and several other cards from this generation and the last. It would be instructive to see where the quality knee is.
purpleflame1257··on Show HN: Omacosy – Omarchy-style tiling desktop for macOS, no SIP
Okay very cool, will try. But please remove the claude-ese from the GitHub repo. It just erodes trust.
purpleflame1257··on Vomit: Clean up Claude 5's token output with a separate LLM
I "downgraded" to Opus 4.6 which is the last one that didn't have these problems.
purpleflame1257··on Browser De-Slop
"Allegedly, these policies are also supported on Windows via Group Policy and MacOS using plist files. I wouldn’t know, since I use a real operating system."

Real 2006 Slashdot energy here. Very rare to see in the wild these days.

purpleflame1257··on AI Has Plunged the Book Publishing Industry into Utter Chaos
That's not necessarily true. Patreon, Twitch, and Onlyfans all reproduce the patronage relationship at microscale. Instead of a commissioned sculpture you might get a shout-out on chat, but the cost to you was also much cheaper.
purpleflame1257··on AI Has Plunged the Book Publishing Industry into Utter Chaos
Economic trends meant we were moving towards patronage models anyway, whether singular or distributed. It seems like mass one-shot payment for media is almost dead. The exception might be video games, thanks in part to console lock-in.
purpleflame1257··on Show HN: Automatically detect and patch walking-dead states in Sierra games
I would suggest, without spoilers, that you go play the original Doki Doki literature club right now.
purpleflame1257··on An all-sky map of half a million supermassive black holes
Interesting how anisotropic it is. Naively I would have assumed it would be roughly symmetrical
purpleflame1257··on After Losses, Retail Investors Flock to 3x Leverage as 2x Product Are Restricted
The threshold for greed is higher than the median net worth of an American. We tell people they need "generational" wealth to a make it in this country because housing, education, and healthcare are all so expensive
purpleflame1257··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
The Olympics were canceled(postponed) due to a plague, so that tracks
purpleflame1257··on Games at the press of a button: The Rip-O-Bot (1989)
>just changing animation quality, physics, attack methods, and level design

So...basically everything about the game but the genre?

purpleflame1257··on Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" is set today (2026-08-04)
Bradbury actually anticipated this on the Martian side and explicitly calls out frozen dinners.
purpleflame1257··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
It's interesting to look at the short a story and see where we are still behind on home automation. We still don't have robot firefighting or accurate robot cooking, for example.
purpleflame1257··on Half-Life ported to Mac OS 9
So will this run through Classic no problem, yes? I almost want to break my powebook G4 out of mothballs on principle to try this.
purpleflame1257··on Yubikey 5.8: Verified Authorization for the New Era of Identity and AI
They used to be so cheap that WIRED offered them as signup freebies. I wonder what happened.
purpleflame1257··on Why do people hate the tech industry? (2023)
Without the promise of return most promising technology would never have been created.
purpleflame1257··on Show HN: Opening lines of famous literary works
I like how "A Wrinkle in Time" starts:"It was a dark and stormy night."
purpleflame1257··on What did SFFA vs. Harvard reveal about admissions?
For the last 50 years you would get in severe trouble for using test scores alone thanks to disparate impact.
purpleflame1257··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
GOG will let you download the offline installer for every game they sell, IIRC.
