purpleblue··on Ask HN: What are the best general math workbooks?
Art of Problem Solving has a great high school math curriculum with exercises. It also has an online math question component called "Alcumus" that you can use as well.
purpleblue··on Ask HN: Firing an employee under a month before vest?
You made this situation worse by not firing them sooner. This is 100% on you. You let this drag out far too long until it comes time to vest.

Now you're going to make this even worse by not letting them vest? You're making mistake after mistake. You're going to look like an asshole in front of the other employees and they won't forget that because you could turn around and do it to them.

purpleblue··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
Absolutely absurd statement.

Is this similar to the "trauma" suffered by teens that wore Levi's Jeans that didn't have the Red Tab, back in the 80s and 90s? To compare a green text bubble to mental health issues is offensive.

purpleblue··on Joe Rogan Interviews Steve Jobs
Absolutely incredible! I've shared this with everyone I know and they are all gobsmacked!
purpleblue··on Joe Rogan Interviews Steve Jobs
Is the audio entirely generated from scratch along with their voices or was it cut and paste from existing audio?
purpleblue··on What “diversity and inclusion” means at Microsoft
It's not those with a disadvantage. It's strictly based on skin color. That's the problem. You have no idea if they are disadvantaged or not. There are plenty of middle-class and upper-class Black families these days.

Unless you think that all Black people are disadvantaged. To me, it's a "ruinous empathy" form of racism if you think "Oh look at that poor Black person!" without knowing anything about her background.

purpleblue··on Apple’s ad business set to boom on the back of its own anti-tracking crackdown
As a user, I love the fact that the App Store has an extra pair of eyes to at least try to keep some consistency. It may suck for iOS developers but as an end user it feels safer than Android.
purpleblue··on The PS5 Has Been Jailbroken
The dedication jailbreakers have to the craft is truly admirable. I remember back in the mid-1980s coming to the realization that the war between people trying to build copy protection and those trying to crack it was an unwinnable war. I thought this as I copied the latest version of CopyWrite so that I myself could just copy whatever program I wanted at the time.
purpleblue··on Tell HN: Reddit shadowban account upon creation
I have a 1 year old unconfirmed account and I'm not shadowbanned at all.
purpleblue··on Meta and Google are cutting staff
If you are grading in the context of peers, it's absolutely a form of sorting. Think of it like a partition-exchange sort, where everything past a particular level is in one bucket and everything above that level is in another bucket.
purpleblue··on Tether ordered to produce documents showing backing of USDT [pdf]
I would LOVE to buy a USDT put but I would only do it on a known exchange. Not some back-alley mechanism where I would likely get scammed. As far as I'm concerned, the entire crypto ecosystem is at risk, and all it will take is BTC below $15k to see a lot of fallout and collateral damage.
purpleblue··on Since mid-April, the Fed has withdrawn ~$140B of liquidity from financial system
That's not very much.
purpleblue··on Study finds high levels of PFAS in school uniforms
Using old-school lye will get rid of PFAS on your clothes. I wonder if that was considered during these tests.

purpleblue··on Tether ordered to produce documents showing backing of USDT [pdf]
If you own Tether right now, and you don't liquidate immediately, you 100% deserve to lose all your money. This thing is going to collapse. There's no reason why Tether would keep its holdings secret unless it's hiding a secret. So be warned, if you don't want to suffer the same fate as Terra you need to liquidate right now.
purpleblue··on Chess is just poker now
How on earth did the anal bead cheating theory ever take hold? The idea you can slander someone with such a ridiculous notion is incredible. How would the accomplice be able to see the board so quickly and be able to input what the opponent has, and then be able to send a signal through Bluetooth (presumably) fast and reliably enough for him to defeat Magnus? How could you encode that with vibrations (presumably) that would be easily detectable enough to discern? Don't these games have time limits?
purpleblue··on Ask HN: Have tech salaries been stagnant for the past decade?
Different company, same role as senior software engineer. In 10 years I've had 4 jobs, although one was only for 6 months, and I recently started a new job.
purpleblue··on Denmark not offering second Covid booster shot to healthy adults under 50
I stand corrected. I got her not getting boosters for her boys as her not getting them vaccinated.
purpleblue··on Denmark not offering second Covid booster shot to healthy adults under 50
You are 100% wrong. This is the same article I myself pointed to. It says they are offering vaccination only to 50 and older or below 50 with health issues.
purpleblue··on Ask HN: Have tech salaries been stagnant for the past decade?
10 years ago I was making 145k base salary. This year I'm making 220k base salary. Both as Senior Software Engineer. I don't think they are stagnating at all.
purpleblue··on Denmark not offering second Covid booster shot to healthy adults under 50
IFR means "infection fatality rate". The operative word is rate. So no, you are completely wrong.

You are comparing number of deaths as opposed to rate of death per infection. The number of COVID infections are orders of magnitude higher than the number of flu infections. The rate of death from COVID per infection is now lower than the flu.

purpleblue··on Denmark not offering second Covid booster shot to healthy adults under 50
The idea that you think just because my account is new that I'm some sort of troll is pretty insulting and ignorant of you. Go through my comment history.
purpleblue··on Denmark not offering second Covid booster shot to healthy adults under 50
Covid IFR is below the flu now, after everyone has become vaccinated and after omicron swept through and infected most of the US.
purpleblue··on How San Francisco makes it insanely hard to build housing
We should ban new golf courses, and reclaim 90% of all golf courses completely. It's a game that uses a ridiculous amount of resources that benefits very little. I'd rather see housing built on existing golf courses.
purpleblue··on The search for dirt on Mudge
At least back then, they were straight asking for MNPI, although I think back then it wasn't called that. Whatever information the person was willing to provide, these people were willing to take.
purpleblue··on The search for dirt on Mudge
Yes it's totally illegal but in the late 90s/early 2000s we weren't in the same level of surveillance as we are now.
purpleblue··on The enduring allure of Choose Your Own Adventure books
I grew up right when Choose Your Own Adventure started so I have a first print, first edition of Cave of Time. Not that it's worth anything or that it's in good condition (it's been beaten and read hundreds of times, I even let my kids read it as they were growing up), but it's a nice period piece for sure.
purpleblue··on Patreon Lays off 17% of Staff
I was born in the 60s and haven't been laid off yet, including during the dotcom bust, all while working for 12+ companies in my career. The bust was the worst, though, our company went through 7+ layoffs and we were decimated, and no one did any real work after a while. Fingers crossed that I can keep this trend until retirement!
purpleblue··on The search for dirt on Mudge
During the dotcom days, when employees had desk phones, some of my coworkers would get unsolicited calls from analysts or other people searching for inside information about our company. They would engage them in conversation, try to become friends with them over months so that they could reveal even the smallest bit of inside information for them.

The lengths that people will go to get some sort of information edge to make money, even doing illegal things, is incredible.

purpleblue··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
It doesn't make sense for the Army to be in the business of developing software. They should be outsourcing this, and having a well-known vendor like SAP means there's a lot of different avenues to get bids to lower prices.
purpleblue··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
There are two major ERP software out there right now: SAP and Peoplesoft.

SAP is the "European" way of doing things, which means there's one right way and you need to align your business to SAP's way of doing things. If you do that, things work very well.

Peoplesoft is the "American" way of doing it, which means that you make your software fit around you. This means a lot of customizations. This makes integrations much more challenging if you're too far off kilter, and things like upgrading is much much harder, because there's too many customizations.

That's the information I had about 10 years old and not sure how much SAP has evolved since then.

Smaller companies these days have a lot more options, like Netsuite is already there for small businesses and Workday is moving in that direction. Startups come and go every day. Rippling appears to be one that is headed in this direction as well.
