purple_ducks··on Leaving NYC for Nashville
Can the money you earn as an employee make the streets quieter or the pavements less packed or the air less polluted?
purple_ducks··on Absolute Beginner's Guide to Emacs (2012)
If there's one thing I will always be grateful to emacs for; it will be changing Caps Lock -> Ctrl

Life changing.

purple_ducks··on Absolute Beginner's Guide to Emacs (2012)
Well hopefully with the advent & oncoming onslaught of Language Server Protocol, most IDEs can spend their time on UI/UX polish.

...Obligatory mention of Xi editor: https://github.com/xi-editor/xi-editor ...

purple_ducks··on Absolute Beginner's Guide to Emacs (2012)
I really feel VSCode is lining up to be the new goto IDE across multiple languages.

Slightly less (directly) extensible than Emacs but still feels it can do pretty much everything that needs doing, plus way nicer & friendlier default UI.

purple_ducks··on Clojure's missing piece (2017)
> You said "map" but are talking about "tree".

In essence yes, the maps I see being bandied about in clj tend to have tree structures.

Haven't seen much/any use of graphs in clj code. Deep nesting has become almost idiomatic at this point from my POV.

Could you provide example/pointer to clj code using a graph in lieu or in addition to a map?

purple_ducks··on Clojure's missing piece (2017)
Given that maps are the defacto data structure in Clojure, it's pie in the sky dreaming if you think you can always or readily avoid nesting or transformations.
purple_ducks··on Clojure's missing piece (2017)
Always found it odd that a data oriented language didn't have XPath equivalent.
purple_ducks··on Developer on Call
> I've been on call for 20+ years. I've never gotten paid extra for it. I just figure it's baked into the normal paycheck

So much for 40 hour work week. People would be spinning in their graves if they knew what had become of employer-employee relationship.

purple_ducks··on 30,000 empty homes and nowhere to live: inside Dublin’s housing crisis
> I strongly doubt Airbnb has anything to do with it.

In Dublin, there have consistently been more complete units for short term let in any moment on AirBnB than there are units available to rent.

Introducing new supply won't solve the problem but it will significantly ease it.

purple_ducks··on Major sites running unauthenticated JavaScript on their payment pages
Before SPA, one could restrict 3rd party scripts from being alive on the payment page.

With the rise of SPAs, it seems there's going to be more and more 3rd party scripts unintentionally running on payment pages.

purple_ducks··on 30,000 empty homes and nowhere to live: inside Dublin’s housing crisis
> when renting is the most common way of living, it is not healthy for society.

Germany (with it's sane housing cost growth) would disagree with that.

> Renting is parasitic and enables social stratification in to elites and tenants.

Not really. Renting provides accommodation mobility. Done correctly, it can be liberating & very valuable for state, renter & landlord.

purple_ducks··on Open Source is Not About You
a code change is still a code change.
purple_ducks··on 30,000 empty homes and nowhere to live: inside Dublin’s housing crisis
As somebody who rents in the same block, I don't want this. We built hotels for people on holidays, not residential apartment blocks. My life shouldn't be upended by constant/"badly" behaved AirBnB guests just so you can make a buck.

These apartment blocks are _homes_ for most people.

purple_ducks··on 30,000 empty homes and nowhere to live: inside Dublin’s housing crisis
> by removing barriers to development

That's quite broad. Barriers to development were lowered and ignored during the Celtic tiger era.

Really poor housing was built and funnily enough, it was still sold at obnoxiously high prices.

The only people pushing for this are property developers and thankfully so far, most of the country has remained strong on not falling for this spiel again.

*This doesn't exclude building higher in city center.

purple_ducks··on Open Source is Not About You
quoting _halgari from June 2016(on clojure)[https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11884028]:

> Something that is often very hard to understand (it took me years to do so). Is that maintaining a language is insanely hard. Everything has a cost. Let me give a good example: A few years back someone submitted a patch that improved the error messages in Clojure. Worked great, just a single extra "if" and a message. It was committed to master. Then people's code got way slower. Why? Well this was a often used function and that single if blew the JVM inline budget causing that function to never be inlined. And that improvement had to he yanked out.

If I make infinite bread loaves and you're allowed take some loaves and _also_ see the recipe, that is quite clearly sharing by every definition out there.

You however don't get to influence _my_ recipe.

purple_ducks··on Errors in Go: From denial to acceptance
Isn't it weird that there's no language which nailed error handling and patterns 100% and which people can point to confidently and say "Do what they did - it's bulletproof"
purple_ducks··on Hugely Popular Android Apps Have Been Committing Ad Fraud Behind Users’ Backs
It's somewhat unfathomable how Android/Google can be so laissez faire with anything that doesn't directly affect them.

I understand why they made the initial quality/quantity trade off for Play store to compete against iOS but surely now they should be focusing on protecting innocent parties in the ecosystem.

So frustrating the amount of bad behaviour allowed in Google's add-on ecosystems.

purple_ducks··on How Harley-Davidson's All-In Bet on Its Past Crippled Its Future
To me, Harleys and their equivalently ignorantly noisy UK cousin(Triumphs) should be legislated out of existence in their current form.

purple_ducks··on The new boomtowns: Why more people are relocating to ‘secondary’ cities

in an apartment. can't speak to the US but most apartments in western europe are really poor when it comes to sound. neighbours above/beside/behind all making noise/water pumps/washing machines.

near impossible to get a moments peace.

purple_ducks··on Nine years of Go

Bizarre that a programming language designed by non first time language designers, backed by a multi-billion dollar company and used extensively throughout that company(by "new" engineers), doesn't have a world class debug story.

purple_ducks··on Three European Countries Block Tax on Tech Giants
> Ireland has been busted (among others) for secretly passing sweet taxation deals with Google, Facebook, Amazon & co.

That is 100% uninformed nonsense.

If you are conflating it with Apple vs EU, you can read this primer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EU_illegal_State_aid_case_agai...

Nothing to do with a country offering a multinational a deal which results in a lower effective tax rate, and is something _EVERY_ country in Europe offers.
