purple_ducks··on Why We Chose Rails to Build Gitlab
Were the companies you were working for agencies?

> that's built in what they consider to be legacy languages

Who's the software company in this situation - you or them or both?

What's the modern solution which they expect you to be on? Go?

What characteristics does it have?

A solution could just as easily be packaged for them in such a way that they just have to run "java -jar someuberjar.jar"

purple_ducks··on BuzzFeed to Cut 15% of Its Workforce
> BuzzFeed certainly does do a lot of listicles

Don't forget they diversified into psuedo-science quizzes as well.

> What you're deriding here is a form of curation

Repackaging content is not curation by any stretch of the word.

> If that's what they have to do to fund BuzzFeed News, I say more power to them.

I don't agree that this is a case where the ends justify the means.

purple_ducks··on BuzzFeed to Cut 15% of Its Workforce
That post leads in with:

> The media is in crisis. Google and Facebook are taking the vast majority of ad revenue, and paying content creators far too little for the value they deliver to users.

Buzzfeed had & still has next to zero original content creators. They have content re-packagers. Take images & thoughts from other websites(reddit/twitter) and puts them in a list.

Take ideas which smaller (& more original) content creators make and re-make it.

Disgusting.

purple_ducks··on Customer Service Agents Can See What You're Typing in Real Time
> "why didn't we do this earlier?"

Because it's invasive.

The user consents to sending you information when they hit Send(explicit). They can remove any incorrect or unrelated information from the text box before they do so.

Especially if they paste in to the text box and inadvertently paste the wrong thing(be that sensitive info or similar).

Even better, let users choose whatever but have _every_ user account backed by a (not publically displayed) verified government ID.
purple_ducks··on Facebook manager quit after being 'harassed' over views on diversity
Not being American (and not being from a European country that colonised), I think POC is misleading as people of Asian descent don't seem to be nearly as stigmatised as people of African descent.
purple_ducks··on Rise of Netflix Competitors Has Pushed Consumers Back Toward Piracy
With Freesat in the mix in the UK, the only other things Sky has going for it are:

a) Sky Atlantic showing new HBO shows 1 day after HBO (no HBO in UK)

b) a slightly more polished EPG and recorder than the freesat/linux equivalents though that gap seems to be reducing.

purple_ducks··on Why We Chose Rails to Build Gitlab
> we're moving to a more modern solution

What exactly qualifies as a modern solution that Java(/jvm?) is disqualified?

Syntax, library eco-system, paradigm, type system, cruft? Is "modern solution" some function of blog post count? A social blade type score for how many early-20 somethings are using it?

Or is it going to be something "simplistic" & "clear" which will eventually inherit the cruft all other large languages do?

Most humans use a GUI when they can(with their connections stored and autocomplete and a few other nice-ities. Of course if you only ever use MySql or Postgres through command line, congrats - you know how to do basic connections(I assume using -h makes you an imposter)

As for the Linux/tar piece, I've used Linux on desktop for a few years(both Ubuntu & Fedora) & have used Suse and CentOS for servers for much longer.

I can tell you tar means tape archive. I can tell you I mostly use it with gunzip to compress it. I still google/reverse terminal search what flags to use with it both when archiving it and unarchiving it. I could probably remember some flags if I spent enough time thinking - why would my brain waste that much effort though?

I don't work as a backup administrator. I have better things to worry about knowing/having present at the forefront of my (admittedly human sized) memory.

_Typically_, all those titles don't exist unless you're in IBM-size company.

At best, somebody might have a "tech lead" title but it's not what people hire for.

_Typically_, companies hire for grad, junior, software engineer and senior software engineer.

Maybe principal once in a blue moon.

Completely off topic but I clicked through your profile (just to see if you were lobste.rs employee - (cynical I know))

Anyway, on your website, you have a 4 picture gallery with the selectors vertically at the side but it was a bit jarring as I'm used to those vertical selectors usually used to display for vertical scrolling.

Even ignoring the above, the photos transition horizontally which is even more jarring (when the vertical selectors exist).

...And how you are keeping track of that and other such minutiae. What data structures are you using and why? And how about if X which would invalidate your approach.

Also, it's not about "knowing" it. It's about implementing it in such a way as to please the interviewers.

It's pop quiz nonsense.

purple_ducks··on Company Update
Your fact is that a (singular) Japanese manufacturer made an electric car which was ~popular. Even if it was the most popular selling electric car, it's dwarfed by sales of every other type of car (on every continent). Despite being on sale for ~8 years in Europe, it's still a novelty seeing one on the road. The Leaf wasn't the kick up the arse that other manufacturers needed, the Tesla 3 arguably was.

This is in spite of Europe being a massive consumer of Japanese cars in general(Nissan & Toyota in particular).

Assuming Tesla 3 doesn't get down to sub €35k price in the next year, Hynudai Kona seems like it will be the best selling EV in Europe in 2019 (provided the end dealers don't mess it up)

Some other Japanese manufacturers:

Toyota, Honda, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Isuzu

Barring Toyota who at least made some effort with the Prius. What have the rest of those industry players done for EV adoption/advancement? Nothing. Some (even in 2019) still haven't made inroads into EV.

purple_ducks··on Company Update
Not having the byproduct waste of energy production pumped into populated areas is a _massive_ gain(regardless of whether there is overall increase in usage of GHG).

Waste from coal powered electricity isn't emitted by every consumer in populated areas. It's emitted in a plant which

a) generally has more advanced particular matter capture technology &

b) to reduce emission further, only the place emitting the emissions needs to be upgraded(not the vehicle of every end consumer of that energy) &

c) is more readily replaceable by a cleaner source with minimal disruption.

purple_ducks··on Company Update
It sure seems like Tesla is the foremost reason car manufacturers have started to fully acknowledge electric is the near(& medium/long term)-future and not just some check box/compliance car to satisfy "well meaning bureaucrats".

Existing European/Japanese/US car manufacturers were happy enough to trundle along with existing ICE cars as it required less effort & gave better profits.

They & Chinese (electric) car/bus makers are the reason our planet is going to improve - ~0 air pollution in populated areas and massive reduction in nuisance engine noises.

purple_ducks··on Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament
re: 1) That article is about a French multinational oil company entering a commercial agreement with Iran. This doesn't relate to an EU member state doing a "side" trade treaty with a non-EU member.

Any other EU company could have done the same.

re: 2) Seems like that provision was in the agreement Switzerland made with the EU:

from: https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/business/freedom-of-movement_sw...

> Switzerland first activated such a safeguard clause – a controversial instrument of its complex dealings with the EU – in 2012, to limit the number of citizens arriving from certain new member countries who joined the EU in 2004..

purple_ducks··on Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament
> I believe this exact issue was just voted on in the British parliament. I fear they disagree with you pretty damn conclusively:

As they are entitled to...Doesn't change anything really. Nobody wins with a hard Brexit but there's only so far the EU can go with concessions before it no longer makes sense. That point has been (roughly) hit.

Secondly, that deal being voted down doesn't mean everybody who voted it down thought there was a better deal out there. Labour and friends want to stay in the EU. They wouldn't attend May's planning unless a hard brexit was taken off the table(British version of saying/not US version).

It's quite telling that both Remainers & Leavers viewed the vote failing as a success.

purple_ducks··on Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament
> France has oil trade deals with African countries and China.

99% sure that is an impossibility but willing to take a look at any refs/articles you could link?

> Switzerland has trade deals that explicitly exclude certain EU member states

Similarly, pretty sure this is an impossibility. Any trade agreements are with and available to (all members of) the EU under the same set of conditions or they're not and they(Switzerland) would then trade under WTO rules.

purple_ducks··on Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament
> Let's give the UK a fair exit and a fair trade deal".

They are getting a fair exit and trade deal.

That's what is happening now. Britain seems to be slowly realising that them being part of the EU was more beneficial to them (& the EU) than any other way.

purple_ducks··on Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament
Ah, that's not how the EU works when it comes to trade. You're in or you're out.

Non-EU countries make trade deals with the EU who is collectively acting on their member states behalf.

There will _NEVER_ be a "side" trade deal between Britain and an EU member state directly.

Don't feel too bad about not knowing this. The original Minister for Brexit David Davis (& embarrassingly enough a former Europe minister) also didn't know this.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/minister-for-...

> However one of the main basic features of the European Union is that EU countries cannot negotiate individual trade deals without side countries and instead do so as a bloc of 28.

purple_ducks··on Big Mac trademark cancelled across Europe
relevant excerpt from https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/jan/15/mcdonalds-l... :

> because McDonald’s had argued that similarity between Big Mac and Supermac would confuse customers

What's more ridiculous is McDonalds trademarked the name of a competitors (arguably) flagship product - which they(McD) never used:

> “They trademarked the SnackBox, which is one of Supermac’s most popular products, even though the product is not actually offered by them,” said McDonagh. “The EU is basically saying either use it or lose it.”

> Projects like vim-fireplace and vim-replant are making use of cider-nrepl already.

purple_ducks··on Language Server Protocol implementation for Swift and C-based languages
Clojure community pretty much had it solved for clj & cljs with nRepl & cider-nrepl & co.

Opinionated implies there is "1 true way" to do things a la angular or ember.

react is most definitely not the embodiment of opinionated.

Ok, now I know you're either trolling or have never used any technology but React to solve problems.
