purple_ducks··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired?
it's a literal stand up so people don't dither.

lot easier to become restless standing around than sitting down.

purple_ducks··on Was it worth paying €41.7bn to bail out Irish banks?
That's unrelated. My point was the Irish government could have burned the bondholders (German/French banks) and let the losses hit their profits instead of piling the Irish taxpayers under a mountain of (private) debt.
purple_ducks··on Was it worth paying €41.7bn to bail out Irish banks?
From the parent article:

> A political investigative blog called Guido Fawkes somehow obtained a list of the Anglo Irish foreign bondholders: German banks, French banks, German investment funds, Goldman Sachs. (Yes! Even the Irish did their bit for Goldman.)

Germany wanted to protect their own banks(/ers) and investment funds from losing money to the detriment and disregard of everyone and everything else.

purple_ducks··on Was it worth paying €41.7bn to bail out Irish banks?
> having the highest mortgage rates in Europe in order to get the banks into profitability

That is not the case. Any EU bank can sell mortgages in Ireland. They choose not to because there is not a functioning property market. Homeowners who don't pay their mortgage can't be kicked out of their home by the banks and also those same homeowners just can't walk away and put the keys back in the letterbox.

The first reason being the most problematic.

Mom & Dad doing patient diagnosis & surgery at home to bond with the kids...

Sounds more problematic than a software engineer opening up the editor.

purple_ducks··on My Time at Snap
For the same reason there's not a whites only restroom.

How do you not understand that if your business offers something, it has to be accessible and available to everyone? Otherwise, it's discrimination.

> Life has always been unfair.

And laws like this ensure the world doesn't become even more unfair.

purple_ducks··on My Time at Snap
I think Ayn Rand and her writings were a pox on modern life and it is unfortunate she is held in regard by anyone, let alone intelligent people...

However, living off social security wasn't really ironic given that she viewed the social security payouts as reimbursement for the (what she considered unjust) payroll taxes she had been forced to pay.

Also, being selfish was central to her philosophy so this was in keeping with it.

purple_ducks··on Tech CEO thrown in the clink for seven years for H-1B gang-master role
> His lawyer had told him not to but he was assured by his Guruji that god would “take care that the entire journey is without problem.”

His lawyer said no. His (separate) spiritual advisor said go.

why did you link to comment section. actual article link: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/09/24/ceo_jailed_visa_fau...

100% agreed. The initial buffering time on them is ridiculous. I've started uploading to streamable and just posting that link rather than upload video straight to reddit.

purple_ducks··on French high court rules that Steam can’t ban users from reselling digital games
> - $1 game with $49 infrastructure fixed price that you have to pay on every resale

Why would data storage & data bandwidth be upfront fixed price? Bill on usage.

purple_ducks··on French high court rules that Steam can’t ban users from reselling digital games
Seems like a great time to separate the billing of license to play from value added things like data storage & bandwidth.
purple_ducks··on Silicon Valley is terrified of California’s privacy law
> Can you imagine owning a grocery store and having to ask every customer their nationality to check which law you must follow to do business with them

Can you imagine a grocery chain who wants to profit from potential customers all over the world but doesn't want to obey local laws in the jurisdictions it operates in?

If people don't want to serve people outside their jurisdiction, do an IP lookup as some US outlets chose to do.

Hacky US start-ups don't get to dictate the rules of the game to the world.

purple_ducks··on A nice app on Elm street
> the compiler is not as good nor as clear as Elm's though

in the article, you mentioned:

> the compiler is one of the best compilers I’ve ever seen and will not compile if it detects that your code is not sound.

It seems like your're judging the entirety of the compiler just on it's user displayed error messages?

purple_ducks··on Irish Teenager Wins Global Science Award for Removing Microplastics from Water
> brought big companies to the country

Unfortunately, these companies were brought over by accountants, not engineers..

In so far as, Ireland gave them an opportunity to target EU market (& tax deals) which meant their staff is mostly non engineering (customer service/finance/legal).

The big mistake Ireland made (back then) was not ensuring some of their core business functionalities _had_ to be present in Ireland (i.e. engineering)

A lot less new tech companies built by accountants and customer support staff compared to engineers.

purple_ducks··on Irish Teenager Wins Global Science Award for Removing Microplastics from Water
> What you see with the teenager in question is a small town with decent enough resources

Everything bar the geo-specific things (sailing, planeterium) come from the same money pot for every school in Ireland (ROI) and are pretty much the same for most schools countrywide. The more disadvantaged an area your school is in, the more resources(a la funding/support) it gets.

This extends outside school to community. The most disadvantaged/crime-ridden communities get the most government funding(local sports/after-school activities/local community centers etc.)

purple_ducks··on Test-driven development: A great idea hiding behind a terrible implementation?
He didn't publish fact. He published opinion.

The context of that opinion is highly relevant and not qualified in the article or a bio.

His insta page listed in the bio however gives an insight into his experience.

So yes, I feel perfectly content to raise his lack of experience.

I'm fed up of noise posing as insight.

purple_ducks··on Test-driven development: A great idea hiding behind a terrible implementation?
Great to see the author tackle such a broad topic after 3 months of bootcamp and 1? year of professional development.

Regurgitating others' opinions and making multiple unfounded assertive statements is key to demonstrating he has already mastered the software domain.

purple_ducks··on Anduril, a startup from Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, now valued at $1B
> We have always been at least somewhat tolerant of massive waves of migration, whether they were Germans, Italians, Irish, British, Chinese

The US wasn't tolerant. I don't even know where to begin. A single comment cannot convey how anti-immigrant the US was.

Nativism took hold of the US when the Irish and Germans arrived (mainly due to religious reasons & also fear of cheaper labour) Given that Italians were majority Catholics, they'd have the same intolerance shown. The Chinese were also hounded.

Laws were passed to discriminate against all those groups.

The only people who possibly got off lightly were the British (due to same religion & culture)

purple_ducks··on Norway's Bold Plan to Tackle Overtourism
Low cost travel & tourism are _not_ rights. They're privileges. Seems fair to include negative externalities in the cost. If that excludes some people, so be it. They can travel closer to home.
purple_ducks··on E.U.’S New Digital Czar: ‘Most Powerful Regulator of Big Tech’
> Are you talking about 1st party cookies vs 3rd party cookies?

No.

I do not need to be served personalised ad cookies in order for the site to provide their service to me.

ditto with analytics.

ditto with social sharing.

ditto with anything else that stores inessential information.

> 99 % of most used websites use 3rd party cookies

You're referring to "3rd party cookies" but it applies to ALL cookies that are not essential so I will answer with respect to all cookies...

Essentially, that's the company's problem. If they want to continue using cookies to store information(regardless if 1st or 3rd party) to do something that is not needed for me to use their service, then they have to inform the user and obtain consent.

If they find the cookies(& popups) result in less users using their service, they should change their behaviour or you know - actually check if they need these active all the time for everyone.

Please read the Description section of this primer before continuing to engage. It is very accessible.

purple_ducks··on SoftBank and WeWork Are as Bad as Each Other
Using your excerpt, I read it as the monster being Softbank. > " Son may turn out to be the Victor Frankenstein of the cheap-money era. He’s helped create a monster that could do him serious harm."

Son's creation (Softbank) is doing plenty harm by investing vast amounts of money in businesses which "have no discernible path to profitability"

> How is it not the law people not understanding the web?

They clearly do and got input from technical people.

> “This shall not prevent any technical storage or access for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or as strictly necessary in order for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide the service.”

purple_ducks··on SoftBank and WeWork Are as Bad as Each Other
Excerpts from the wiki page below; seems like the monster did plenty harm to cause Frankenstein pain.

> He [the creature] traveled to Victor's [Frankenstein ] family estate using details from Victor's journal, murdered William, and framed Justine.

>Should Victor [Frankenstein] refuse his request, The Creature also threatens to kill Victor's remaining friends and loved ones and not stop until he completely ruins him.

> The Creature demands that Victor [Frankenstein] create a female companion....Fearing for his family, Victor reluctantly agrees.

> the Creature had strangled Clerval to death and left the corpse to be found where his creator had arrived

> The night following their [Victor [Frankenstein], Elizabeth] wedding, ... the Creature strangles Elizabeth to death

purple_ducks··on Want to Do Business in Silicon Valley? Better Act Nice
I don't see the issue here.

Would we be so hard on him if he was knowledgeable about blood testing and had tweeted about Theranos when they ultimately failed?

The less silence is the norm, the better.

We need people to publicly call out bullshit when they see it (at least he waited until they failed rather than when they were trying to succeed)

Some people who thought they knew better than actual experts failed and took 174m of somebody else's money with them.

It benefits certain angels & early stage VCs to have a culture of relentless optimism and fantasy in the face of reality, and to ensure silence is forced on everyone except those who succeed.

Not related to his Corben pieces but Owen Jones is probably one of the weakest journalists I've read. It is clear his articles get clicks because he keeps being featured but I cannot stand his pieces.
