This comment would make sense on Reddit or twitter “maybe” due to how easy it is to fall into a bubble but on HN? This website regularly features content from conservative intellectuals.
purple-again··on 9th Circuit Rules Apple Owes Retail Workers for Time Spent Security Screening
There is a very clear line in that you chose that commute. You can find housing near your employer. You have a laundry list of personal reasons why that housing is not right for you but the fact remains you chose to have those things and commute instead of living nearby and sacrificing those things.

The employer requiring you to do something as a condition of continued employment is clearly, well obviously not, an act that should be compensated for. They could let you leave 15 minutes early to go through security check, they just don’t want to because, apparently, they don’t have to.

I have no doubt that you will find a group of people on the other side of the line there who think employers should have to pay for commuting time and obviously this case proves there are people on the other side of this line who think they shouldn’t have to compensate you for going through security time. However I would guess that the majority of people will agree that hardships you impose on yourself are your responsibility while hardships the employer imposes on you should be their responsibility.

purple-again··on Amazon's Surveillance Infrastructure and Revitalizing Worker Power
This goes so against what I previously believed that there must be some critical underlying fact I am missing. Are the facts below correct?

1) This is stating that Amazon requires its warehouse workers to go through a security screening before they can leave at the end of every shift.

2) This daily process takes 25 minutes to 1 hour

3) Employees are NOT paid for this time

4) Employees are hourly and not salary

5) The supreme court UNANIMOUSLY agreed they do not have to be paid for this work.

6) Their reasoning for this is that the security check is not a critical part of the job and could be eliminated.

Those 6 facts either cant be right or I must be missing some critical 7th fact that ties this all together. Can anyone help out?

What does that mean? Promise is an excellent one word description of the underlying phenomenon. Your language promises that the code will finish executing before the code you place in your then/error blocks allowing you to safely write some asynchronous logic in a synchronous world.

Augmented reality and or virtual reality “game consoles”. If I had a spare billion or three laying around I would buy up some nice spacious commercial real estate in all of the metro areas of the US. Construct the piping and glue to present a uniform framework for every single one of those locations. Think for now a single 20x20 square room, something achievable regardless of whether it was an old Best Buy or an old grocery store.

These locations become your PlayStation or game console. You need your own killer content like Zelda or something to get off the ground, but once you can offer development tools that offer access to such a large audience, the entrepreneurs will come and start building content for you.

You provide a set number of props like staircases, blocks, etc that can be arranged into a specific game rooms layout and then painted by the developers game giving you much more room than just a big open area to work with.

There are some really good POC’s out there, but it’s just a single location like a laser tag place servicing a single area. That’s not enough to build a critical mass of developers or players.

purple-again··on Actor Chadwick Boseman, star of “Black Panther,” dies at 43
Stage 3 colon cancer at age 39. Incredibly bad luck. For those that don’t know, in the US at least, they don’t recommend you even start screening for it until 50. It’s traditionally an old man disease, but can strike anytime.

RIP

Blizzard did not do that. Valve (the company behind Steam) did that. Much salt was sown around the Blizzard offices during the lawsuits that followed. Valve won.

Blizzard went on to release a remake of the game that spawned DOTA which was universally reviled, a large part of which was due to them killing incentives to build custom maps with their new IP rules designed to avoid another DOTA incident.

Spacex is subject to the same OFAC sanctions as every other US business. They are free to do business with most of China, however there are a number of exceptions usually having to do with the company participating in construction in the South China Sea.

Doesn’t mean new sanctions can’t be levied and certainty China seems a likely target for future increased sanctions.

purple-again··on In alarming move, CDC says people exposed to Covid-19 do not need testing
The headline made me very concerned but then first two paragraphs made it make perfect sense.

The title would be infinitely less clickbait bullshit if you added one word to the end:

“In alarming move, CDC says people exposed to Covid-19 do not need testing immediately”

Even better:

“CDC says people exposed to COVID-19 should not be tested immediately after exposure”.

The alarming part is why would they put out this guidance without specifying how long to wait. Seems worse than useless as it empowers everyone to make whatever policy they want for how long to wait and then finger point at how they followed CDC guidance in doing so.

purple-again··on YC Software Startups: Value and Initial Programming Language Used
This is excellent, thanks for sharing. Anyone know if something similar exists for JS frameworks (React,Ember,Angular,Backbone, etc)? Would be great to see their popularity over time.

I’m guessing maybe not having a single central repository like Gems will prevent this data from being so easily accessible.

These examples of “no human in the loop” are stretched so wide as to lose all meaning. A human designed the mine to destroy anything that meets the programmed requirements (weight on mine or proximity to mine).

You don’t have a case of no human in the loop until that mine is capable of exploding or not exploding and it’s responsible on a case by case basis for deciding which to do.

I believe polite people call us "contrarians" while everyone else calls us "assholes". But yeah I get it, I truly enjoy taking opposite sides of arguments against people that are passionately arguing their position for much the same reasons you have described above.
purple-again··on Wirecard hired actors to fool auditors
Partly false. We were audited every year by one of our competitors. There is a strong likely hood that the reason she was told to stop finding problems is because the de minimus limit (the dollar figure at which we don't care) is truly, and I mean TRULY massive for the kind of companies that are audited by EY, PWC, KPMG, and Deloitte. I refuse to believe for one second that a serious issue was swept under the rug by a senior or manager.

As for the guy sleeping in cupboards...the staff at those firms reguarly work 80 hour weeks (not the "I work 80 hour weeks counting all kinds of stupid things" but the "I was at the client site or in the home office for 80 hours this week". It was a very common occurence for hard working staff members to take naps at the client (most likely because last night was a 2am night). Promotions at these firms are often very competitive as the organization is an "Up or out" organization designed to chew up fresh college grads.

The peer review is conducted by an independent evaluator, known as a peer reviewer. The AICPA oversees the program, and the review is administered by an entity approved by the AICPA to perform that role. 2. The peer review helps to monitor a CPA firm's accounting and auditing practice (practice monitoring).

How is the best experience to listen to a band live? I have had literally the exact opposite experience in life. Concerts are lots of fun, but when its comes to listening to the actual music at the concert, unquestionably not even close to the quality of a sound booth.
purple-again··on More than 100 coal-fired plants have been converted to natural gas since 2011
I hate to say it but based on this source it looks like global power sourced from coal power has gone UP every year since 2011. I found this source on google and am know nothing about its political agenda, however the slider it provides to see total coal power by year seemed very handy.

https://www.carbonbrief.org/mapped-worlds-coal-power-plants

2011: 1.679 .MW 2012: 1.740 .MW 2013: 1.799 .MW 2014: 1.848 .MW 2015: 1.917 .MW 2016: 1.969 .MW 2017: 2.002 .MW 2018: 2.018 .MW 2019: 2.044 .MW

The growth appears to be coming from new plants coming online in each of those years primary in India and China.

How do you reckon the seemingly contradictory statements in your post?

1) "...it also blocks registrations from anyone outside of EU"

2) "But to just block their entire instance...is to sweep a bunch of HUMANS under the carpet and not even attempt to communicate with them"

Unless your instance is specifically dedicated to taking action in EU politics are you not sweeping a bunch of humans under the carpet and not even attempting to communicate with them by blocking everyone outside of the EU from talking to you?

Forgive me if I missed something, I am just truly curious because you don't see some seemingly contradictory statements in close proximity often which makes it likely I am just missing some core fact.

purple-again··on What I Learned About Failing from My 5 Year Indie Game Dev Project
I agree with this interpretation. The article OP experienced a real and true 'failure' because his goal was income generation and the project didn't provide that. The guys he handed it off to may have a goal of just being a recognized name in the space (clout?) and so consider their time and effort to be a success.

The whole one mans garbage is another mans treasure taken from another angle.

purple-again··on Why forgiving someone else is about you
No that’s your definition of revenge. I agree with the OPs definition of revenge. The first step of any productive conversation is to make sure you have a meeting of the minds on the words being used to describe real world phenomenon.

Seems highly probable HR knew what was going on and was okay with it. Child died recently. Only one driving father to chemo appointments. Etc. not the kind of thing they would give any other employees a heads up on.

It would be very strange if they had no idea and didn’t care that an employee wasn’t showing up. That kind of culture would get swamped fast.

purple-again··on BMG: A Production Ready Relational Algebra in Ruby
Don’t bother with a small selection of random opinions that may or may not have an agenda that doesn’t align with yours. Simply go to the monthly who’s hiring posts and compare Ruby to Python etc. for the technologies you are considering. You will need to understand that Rails is actually the keyword you are looking for rather that Ruby and I don’t know enough about the Python ecosystem to help you but I think maybe Django is the major player in that space.
purple-again··on Pattern Matching, Racial Diversity and the Hypocrisy of Big Tech Media

I’m pretty sure “racial diversity” here doesn’t mean “not white” but instead means racial division in proportion to the population in context.

purple-again··on Gas selling for under $1 per gallon in 13 US states
The only real meat from the article:

The states on that list include New York, Michigan, Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Ohio, Colorado, Missouri, Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, Kansas and Kentucky.

Keep in mind though that prices are not in any way shape or form set at the state level. This could just mean that one small region of the state has that price while the major metro areas where 95% of the states population live are 250% higher still.
