My post ends with /s and was a snarky way of saying exactly what you just said.
purple-again··on GNU World Order
Honestly I am literally shaking with rage over the top center image. Put so damn much effort into beautiful symmetry and then just said fuck it with the one blank space to the left of “Welcome to” but TWO blank spaces to the right of it? I mean wtf was he/she thinking?

Just do “ Welcome “

/s

I hope that second 80% wasn’t a typo because it made me spit my tea out in laughter. I’ve tried my hand at a few indie games like probably every programmer/gamer and wow does that last mile to “done enough to say done with a straight face” seem to stretch on into infinity.
purple-again··on U.S. Hits Record Daily Death Toll, with Worse Likely to Come
I am not sure about this specific metric but based on my experience with government metrics you will be waiting until closer to April than January for those numbers.
purple-again··on IRS says its own error sent $1,200 stimulus checks to non-Americans overseas
Eh this one doesn’t seem that strange to me. People die every day, a lot of them. Sending a check to an American that died and hasn’t been reported upwards to the federal government is not surprising. Sending money to non Americans who are not in America is a bit of a head scratcher. How did that even happen? I don’t care enough about 34 million dollars to look any further into it but I am curious about who these people are and how they got sent checks by the US government. Did they live here once upon a time and left? That would make sense to me, not dissimilar from the dead not dead people, just stale data and speed was the stated goal so stale data is to be expected.

Not really my space so all I have to offer is a super minor nitpick. On iPhone the hamburger doesn’t do anything when I click on it in landscape or portrait. Best of luck with your project!

I’m as layman as you here but I assume it comes from the line of thought “just because light is contained to only go that fast doesn’t mean matter has to be constrained to only go that fast.”

It’s a natural extension of knowing that humans can’t fly. We need only look up to see that constraint didn’t hold up to the rest of time nearly as well as contemporary humans assumed it would.

How do we know that some immutable property of space/time causes light to travel at the speed it does rather than the other way around where some immutable property of light causes it to be incapable of traveling any faster (the old strap wings to a human and look now it can fly; so strap X to light and look now it can go faster to!)

Again, the extent of my knowledge in this space is from Star Trek not science so please be gentle with my clear level of ignorance.

Reminders like this send a shiver down my spine. Reality works on such a grander timescale than humans that it’s easy for us to convince ourselves that something is working when in reality it’s only worked so far. My family relies on the trucks to keep rolling. As much as I love post apocalyptically stories like zombies and what not, I firmly understand that I can’t feed my family and would likely be forced to watch them starve if the current world order broke down. Here’s to hoping that great leap into the future wasn’t into a really deep hole with a long fall before we hit solid ground.

Without question if I can’t find a menu online I will not visit the restaurant. Doesn’t mean they need their own website though, just need to show up on some aggregator when I google food near me and peruse the results to pick something.

Interesting assertion you have made because every peer review source I have ever seen on the issue finds a clear correlation between wealth and intelligence.

Could you provide any sources for your claim that income and genius rarely have a strong correlation?

purple-again··on Underrated predictor of success: willingness to be low-status
I’m afraid no one would define any of my attempts so far as pretty except to call them pretty bad! That’s actually a great idea though, I could probably reduce the money sink a bit by trying to them some of my projects into art work. Thanks for sharing that idea!
purple-again··on Underrated predictor of success: willingness to be low-status
I responded on topic to the OP with a single data point supporting their position. I expressed my willingness to toil away as a low status person (perpetual motion chaser) that has zero expectation of success amongst rational people.

I don’t understand why you decided that needed to be followed up with a personal attack.

purple-again··on Underrated predictor of success: willingness to be low-status
I love perpetual motion machines. Absolutely fascinated by them. I am quick to dump on flat earthers and antivaxxers and understand the science against perpetual motion just as well.

That said, given a strong UBI or a grant of a billion dollars I would GLEEFULLY spend the rest of my life working on trying to build a perpetual motion machine. Sometimes we just have to remember that if we are honest with ourselves we are not as rational as we would like to believe.

purple-again··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
How are changes to H1B's a political issue in the same vein as say the president going to the hospital? H1B's are huge in the tech industry and so of course of huge interest to the tech community directly.

Almost always gross. When you hear "I make $150,000" in 99.9% of cases that will be the number that are hired at. For that exact number I would expect the actual annual cash in hand to be close to $80,000.

Note that is VERY individual circumstances specific. The largest chunk of that missing $70,000 went to taxes at the local, state, and federal level. Easily $45,000 of it is gone in taxes. There is also a common game of moving pre tax dollars around that benefit you, but not exactly the same way a dollar in hand would.

The two most common are 401ks (typically 4-8% of gross depending on employee matching) which is money that goes into a retirement account for you and you can't touch it until you are old (55 or 65 or something, not up to date on the numbers there) without incurring both a significant penalty of 10% but also having to pay tax on it the year you withdrawal it. There are a few hardship exclusions like medical, first time home buying etc, where you can dip into this untaxed pool of money but for the most part can't touch it until retirement.

The other common pre tax exclusion is an HSA where you get to put pre taxed dollars into an account that can only be used to pay for medical expenses. Essentially every high dollar professional in America takes full advantage of this offering as we all expect to have out of pocket medical expenses and it makes no sense to pay them with taxed dollars instead of pre taxed dollars.

I believe you but out of curiosity why does 1886 seem "much more plausible" than 1896? I don't think I could have picked correctly from those two dates without straight guessing even if it was the last question on who wants to be a millionaire.

This isn’t enough information to decide if the media is ignoring the story. Back in the age of print newspapers a common trick was front page above the fold story on Monday morning that was not true followed up by a one paragraph retraction on page 14 in Saturday’s paper.

The modern day digital equivalent is harder to determine and I am not aware of any service attempting to do so. The news companies have solid analytics on how their websites are used. For each of those articles linked were they on the front page? Did the user have to scroll down to a section where stories are only clicked on by 2% of users? Did the story remain linked on the front page of the website for 1 hour or for 2 days? Is the contents of the link the same as the contents was when it was first published?

It’s entirely possible that the reach of all of those articles you linked above could be measured in the 10’s of people rather than the millions.

Most people don’t search for news on a topic. They visit Fox/CNN or whatever their preferred source is and consume what is presented to them.

I’m fascinated but don’t understand how they could be a thing in reality. Pretty much everyone I’ve ever seen or known has a pretty unique desktop cluttered with installed apps and files and usually with a custom background.

How could the attackers video simulation of a windows desktop fool the user into thinking they are still on their own computer?

Yeah that is roughly my impression as well. Even worse that UD entry is from 2009 so either this guy just plugged some SUPER random weird shit or he was trying to be funny and picked what he thought was a nonsense word...only for it to be this. The internet might have been a bad idea?

Wow, tearing down all of the bullshit in that site deserves its own submission but for now I will just focus on one thing: $30.00 per month for running shoes. What?

You can get two pairs of shoes for that at Payless shoes. They will last at least 6 months. Is anyone out there paying $360/year for running shoes? If anyone is interested in this product I would LOVE to hear about your reasoning.

This is the precise moment that pulled me out of the article and I left lol. The optimal starting strategy is to put avalanche missles on your fighters and the cannon is useless? That is objectively untrue!

The optimal starting strategy is TWO cannons. Avalanche missles are objectively wrong. They destroy small craft leaving you with no easy early ground missions. The cannons are more than capable of taking down a tiny or small craft and make sure it’s not destroyed in the process.

I am more interested in an analysis of the “controversies” section and the initial paragraph of a topic. The kind of information that is included versus the kind of information that is not included. This is likely to be where the most significant bias can be found.

Like most things in America it comes down to political pandering thanks to the two party system. You may have noticed a lot of progress or corruption on the Cuba front in recent memory based on your political affiliation. There is a large “Cuban” American population that primarily hates the regime in control of Cuba and will support the political opponent that is speaking tough on Cuba. Whether you care about Soviet’s or Communism or revenge is irrelevant because what you do care about is south Florida and South Florida still cares deeply.
purple-again··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
I will guess the sentiment is common to people who get upset when their coworkers get to take cigarette breaks and they don’t. The perceived unfairness of them getting a benefit you want (10 minute break every hour hanging out behind the store) compounded by the feeling that they are the better one because smoking is a bad thing anyway so why am I being “punished” for making the right choice?

Those of us with parents understand the other commenters point about what’s next “getting upset about cancer patients going to the doctor” because yeah...we love our children very much. Childless people can be forgiven for thinking that the time is more akin to sitting around the table playing a board game with everyone laughing and having a great time so they are resentful that you are getting a benefit in the form of extra time off and for a lot of them probably compounded by the feeling that they made the better noble decision by having no kids.

In both cases the business is letting it happen (smoke breaks and child care) for really only one reason. It makes more business sense to accommodate the issue then it does to try and fight it when the cause is societal and pervasive.
