punnerud··on The Ugly Truth About Spotify Is Finally Revealed
Lower price and just wanted to try. Forced myself to use it, started creating new playlists, listen to the radio created based on songs etc.

Now my YouTube Music is more used by the kids and the family than Spotify

punnerud··on The Ugly Truth About Spotify Is Finally Revealed
It’s from the same country that have managed to automate most of service work at Klarna using ML, so not surprised
punnerud··on The Ugly Truth About Spotify Is Finally Revealed
I forced myself to use YouTube Music 7 years ago and haven’t switched back (included with YouTube premium), also improved a lot the latest years
punnerud··on Xiaomi Home Integration for Home Assistant
Two more important notes:

- Use an MicroSD card that can handle multiple read/write like the purple MicroSD cards. Can also be a benefit with too big card to save some writes, to make the card last longer. Talking about <1year vs +50 in how long they last.

-It’s just Python, Jinja and Sqlite3 at the core. For custom programs I find it easier to write the Python program and then just convert to Jinja syntax.

punnerud··on Superwall – Arguing in YouTube comment that I should break Apple dev. agreement
I posted on X but the link was deleted by the community. Tried to resubmit, and did it wrong and had to do it all over again.

Sorry about that.

punnerud··on Show HN: Comments on Hacker News in sequential order
This is the first comment as example, go try another post. This solution is mainly to make it easy for the poster, to be able to follow up comments here on HN more easily
punnerud··on Ask HN: Can I download Torrent of a movie legally if I own the DVD/Blueray?
Did not know that, interesting
punnerud··on Ask HN: Can I download Torrent of a movie legally if I own the DVD/Blueray?
True, maybe I think to much based on the morality. I often think "this does not feel right, so there must be a law against/for it"
punnerud··on OpenWRT One Released: First Router Designed Specifically for OpenWrt
I found that I could connect UniFi directly to the fiber bridge, dropping the “free” router. Believe there is better firewall in UniFi anyway.
punnerud··on Ask HN: Can I download Torrent of a movie legally if I own the DVD/Blueray?
Don’t need to download fast as long as it’s your copy and you downloading a bit faster than your watching speed.

300Mbit/s downloads 50GB (dual-layer Blueray) in 22 Minutes

punnerud··on Ask HN: Can I download Torrent of a movie legally if I own the DVD/Blueray?
Not thinking about upload to make it available, just as a cheaper way of backup and access to what you already own.
punnerud··on Ask HN: Can I download Torrent of a movie legally if I own the DVD/Blueray?
Ok, so as long as the user itself, or someone else on their behalf, makes 100% copy and store it locally at the user its ok as I read it?

Then next step is that the user can put all those GB on their own Dropbox (not shared). But what Dropbox can do is to do hash-check of the files and only keep one file of all those hundres of compies. Synced to cloud.

Still only the users copy and they can access it at home, just at a fraction of the cost for storing the copy.

punnerud··on Ask HN: Can I download Torrent of a movie legally if I own the DVD/Blueray?
What if the system is build so the copy and the downloaded version is identical down to the byte?

So both is your copy.

punnerud··on Starlink Direct to Cell
If China where to compete they also need LEO satellites that is just over China for a couple of minutes, that have to take a long round trip around the word to give a couple of minutes access again. That’s why you need a huge constellation.

It’s either selling to the whole world or nothing. If you don’t want to go for slow GEO stationary.

punnerud··on Webvm: Virtual Machine for the Web
It also supports Tailscale (or the other way around). If you use SSH from Tailscale Admin it’s actually WebVM you see: https://labs.leaningtech.com/blog/webvm-virtual-machine-with...

punnerud··on Few people grasp the amount of effort Daniel Gackle (dang) expends running HN (2020)
Daniel/Dang's comment history: https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=dang

Thank you Daniel for your good work over all these years! I know the tweet/X is from 2020, but still valid.

punnerud··on Anthropic outage message within Cursor AI
Sometimes GPT 4 is ok. I often (1 in 50 times probably) have to switch to o1. Seems like Sonnet 3.5 (new) is optimized to solve all task well, but when there is complex problems it have never seen before o1 does better.

Using o1 I often find that it does not change the code, so switching back to Sonnet and ask to make the code changes and it often works.

Build and published 3 iPhone apps the last month this way.

punnerud··on AWS data center latencies, visualized
Can also use Chrome Extentions like Colorblindly to change all the colors. Tested it on the webpage now (I am not colorblind) and I see that the colors change: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/colorblindly/flonia...
punnerud··on Computer use, a new Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku
I know, but similar updates to Copilot would probably take over a year and they designed it in a way that we got the update now without having to reinstall it.
punnerud··on Computer use, a new Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku
Cursor AI already have the option to switch to using claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022 in the chat box.

I was about to try to add a custom API. I’m impressed by the speed of that team.

punnerud··on AWS CEO tells workers to quit if they don't want to come back to the office
Any statistics on the kind of people that stick to office work. A, B, or C players? Introverts vs extroverts, programmers vs project managers..
punnerud··on My solar-powered and self-hosted website
Is this the same page that had the background effect indicating level of the battery?
punnerud··on Dookie Demastered
It’s starting to get way easier these days with the help of Claude.ai and Cursor.ai. I find it’s easier to pay much more focus to details when the iteration process is faster.
punnerud··on Bop Spotter
Different old songs (still on Shazam) in lat and long direction, if you find two of them you have the exact location.

Could also place a directional speaker on top of your cars roof to not listen to it yourself or interrupt neighbors, just to be able to locate it.

punnerud··on Everything you need to know about Python 3.13 – JIT and GIL went up the hill
The ones saying they will never use Python because it’s slow, is the probability high that their “fast” language is not thread safe?
punnerud··on I have 2000 old VHS tapes in my garage and don't know what to do with them
As long as you have them you are allowed to keep a digital copy as well? Can you also rent out your digital copy?
punnerud··on Openpilot – Operating system for robotics
Most likely not legal to invalidate in EU. There is laws that’s say that ev everything you can do manually, you are allowed to automate. Any rules against that is null and void.

The “horse winning race” case is a known one where they go into this.

punnerud··on Openpilot – Operating system for robotics
Isn’t the software for training end-to-end NN to be used in automation? Just a first version that it’s used for cars, and they have been using it for their own robot.

So the claim still stands?

punnerud··on Knowledge graphs using Ollama and Embeddings to answer and visualizing queries
I have a new version that utilize the graph. Not pushed it yet. Then I use the embeddings to tag the answers and use tags + graph to try to understand if it is a good or bad reasoning. Hope to have it out next week.

A bit to many bugs now.
