punkbit··on Ask HN: Went to prison for 18 months, lost access to my GitHub. What can I do?
That's a good idea!

I've been thinking about how they could solve this, since they accept payments; wouldn't it be possible to request a payment with a specific reference code to verify the identity? Paired with any other required identification process, documentation, etc.

punkbit··on Ask HN: Went to prison for 18 months, lost access to my GitHub. What can I do?
There are alarming statistics about phone snatching in London. Plus, we are NOT OUR PHONES. Doesn't GitHub have a way for people to verify and prove somebody's identity? Given that's a fact, isn't it best to disable 2FA and stop recommending it to people?

Following this post, I have reviewed all my main accounts, created recovery codes, set up backups, and added alternative email addresses, among other tasks. Hope for the best.

Résumé/CV: https://punkbit.com/docs/cv-punkbit-helder-oliveira.20250728...

I'm a Product Engineer and a creative based in London. I’ve built full-stack applications across web, mobile, blockchain and embedded platforms. My client-side work includes React, Electron, Roku’s Scenegraph, and native iOS development with Swift and SwiftUI, always with a strong focus on UX and design-first thinking. On the service-side, I’ve worked with traditional service hosting, containers, and serverless, including (but not limited to) AWS, GCP, Cloudflare, Workers, CloudFormation, SAM CLI, nodejs, bunjs, MySQL, Postgres, NoSQL, grpc, Redis, Docker, nginx, and a few legacy tools best left unnamed (yes, including CodeIgniter and ftp).

I’ve also developed developer tools like CLIs and SDKs, primarily JavaScript land, and have written code in systems languages such as Rust and Zig.

In the AI space, I’ve integrated models via the OpenAI SDK, leveraged prompts, LLMs, and explored LangChain/LangGraph.

I care about clean code, great UX, developer experience, documentation (yes), rapid iteration and automating workflows with CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Bash scripts, etc).

It's hard to believe, but some people enjoy. On the other hand, some popular content on TikTok is probably worse than AI generated content and that's another problem...
punkbit··on Restrictions on house sharing by unrelated roommates
True, rooms in London for GBP 1.3k, sharing a house with other 3 or 4 strangers!
punkbit··on Economists agree that the nightmare of hiring Generation Z is real
Another millennial here, the situation in Lisbon/Portugal during the period was very bad. But today in London, most opportunities I’m finding are in AI startups, some lead by very young people. Overall the job market is terrible at the moment for everyone.
punkbit··on Is just a tough market or am I unhireable now?
I believe we are in a recession, and I received downvotes for mentioning it last time. But there aren't many opportunities out there. Most opportunities are in AI startups, and some people claim it's a bubble. If that's true, sooner or later, things will get much worse. Just imagine...

I've also noticed that people have been discriminating against Indians. It's almost like there's a green card to voice anger against. I don't hear about it in London/UK, but in places like Lisbon in Portugal and USA, people are just shameless. The H-1B news had some of the most hateful comments imaginable.

You seem to have a good skill set and experience, but the text is hard to read. You can improve it! Maybe design the CV a bit differently. Don't be shy about sharing who you really are. Nowadays, most job opportunities are shared on Twitter or X, where people showcase their capabilities and stories. I understand that sharing sensitive information is difficult, especially due to your illness, which I hope you recover from. But it's good to bring some projects to life and talk about them publicly.

Once you get interviews, you'll notice a pattern where HR, HM are cancelling last minute, stop hiring for the position suddenly, or simply ghost. Or, when rejecting, don't provide constructive feedback. So, be mindful of the time you invest in preparing for these interviews.

Good luck and hope you find a job soon!

What stops companies from hiring talent remotely?

We are in 2025!

Decentralisation is important due to the high cost of living in cities. Bring life to less populated areas.

punkbit··on Next.js is infuriating
A lot of companies have Nextjs as a requirement, you can see it in the job posts. It's almost like React = Nextjs, where they don't even mention React. There are developers out there who are highly invested in Vercel's business. Ultimately, the dev teams are responsible for making these decisions.

I've encountered issues based on Nextjs in a few projects where the best approach was to eliminate it.

The outcome was nicer and higher development satisfaction.

If you dare to say that you had to get rid of Nextjs from a particular project, during a job interview, you're done!

punkbit··on LinkedIn is the fakest platform of them all
Yeah, LinkedIn always looked fake to me! But maybe they're fake because it's worth it for them.

I always refused to have a LinkedIn account (before the 2010s), and I still don't have one (2025). However, based on other people's experiences, it seems that you miss a lot of opportunities. Applying to jobs manually is a full-time job; maybe being found by a recruiter is easier to get a job?

Do recruiters even check manual applications? I can see that some people do, and as long as the application happens just a few minutes after being posted. For example, for "Who's hiring", if you don't apply immediately, you won't hear back!

Although I don't like it, LinkedIn seems to be very important if you don't want to waste your time. If you had an account 10 or 15 years ago, opportunities might have come knocking. Nowadays? Not very clear with so much noise out there.

So, maybe the fake LinkedIn people know much better than I do.

Glad this was brought back to attention!
punkbit··on Ask HN: Is there a market for agentic scraping tools?
If you're concerned about the costs, you could provide the process/service but require clients to provide their own LLM token. With that being said, you'd have to rethink your service charge.
punkbit··on Ask HN: How did Soham Parekh get so many jobs?
Do these teams know about version control? It’s quite simple to see who’s doing actual work and contributing…

Some claims he was brilliant, doing exactly what? Copying and pasting LLM output?

Did he participate in any hourly, daily technical conversations? Did he replied to others quick enough? Do these teams even know how to use slack, discord, etc? Are they having video meetings all the time and only person speaking like a podcast maybe?

punkbit··on Who is Soham Parekh, the serial moonlighter Silicon Valley can't stop hiring?
The article mentions startups where you have to help create or develop an actual product, and a scam artist.
punkbit··on Who is Soham Parekh, the serial moonlighter Silicon Valley can't stop hiring?
Trying to run three marathons at the same time will only keep you from finishing any of them. You can show up for the photo or just the final mile, but that only proves who you really are!

It's very hard on other people, who, in some cases, are making tremendous efforts, such as running marathons again, due to these types of people...

punkbit··on Ask HN: Worth leaving position over push to adopt vibe coding?
Software engineering is not about typing. The LLM would write the unit tests based on the implementation you provide. Regardless of the LLM's output, you'd be expected to read and understand it before committing, or at the very least, review, refactor, tweak, etc. Reading is crucial for both personal and cognitive development. That is not vibe coding! There are top devs in the industry using them in top applications, such as Ghostty or Bun. The biggest names in the scene! The reality is that you would not know if your favourite app was partially or fully built with LLM help, sorry to disappoint!
punkbit··on Zig breaking change – Initial Writergate
I can't see how the team or community are aggressively marketing Zig. There's a lot of buzz around some projects written in Zig, such as Bun and TigerBeetle. Andrew Kelly isn't even on Twitter or X. It almost sounds like you're talking about the 14-year-old indie devs sharing their 1M MRR apps? It's a non-profit, created by real people working very hard to make something valuable for the rest of us... People who could easily be driving Lambos with their talent.

When someone creates something others want, it'll inevitably become popular.

If your app is stable, could you not keep using the version you're happy with?

punkbit··on Next.js 15.1 is unusable outside of Vercel
For Frontend development, my recommendation is Vitejs. For content-heavy sites, try Astrojs!

I've never opted for Nextjs for any client, but have experienced having to get rid of Nextjs from client projects.
