puchatek··on Fusion and Magic
This is very beautiful written. I haven't finished it yet but i already made a mental note to check it more by the author just for the prose alone.
puchatek··on My approach to taking notes in meetings
What about talking to a person about the previous topic while listening to another person talk about the current?
puchatek··on My approach to taking notes in meetings
Muy cleverito
puchatek··on Key witness in Assange case admits to lies in indictment
That's what I recall from an interview with Melzer a while back too. Don't recall the details though.
puchatek··on Ask HN: Best “I brought down production” story?
I think the hint is in "after the second time I did this". I would also wonder if to keep them on at that point.
puchatek··on CRISPR gene-editing breakthrough opens door to treating broad array of diseases
If eating GMOs has you scared, this should be absolutely terrifying
puchatek··on Internal competition can often be the most dangerous kind
Yep. If they had all coordinated their efforts then they might have settled on some inferior design and stuck with it for longer than necessary. That third group might not have been around to look into that CMOS stuff
puchatek··on An Omega-3 that’s poison for cancer tumors
That's hardly evidence. You have to control for all the other things that differ between developed and undeveloped countries. Since this is difficult you could at the very least find 1000 farmers in an undeveloped country and feed them 100g of fat a day I'm addition to what they eat, then monitor their health for a few decades. Then we'd know better
puchatek··on Don't Feed the Thought Leaders
Good article, but needs more blockchain.
puchatek··on Always Be Quitting
I think the article is not about general technical knowledge or even knowledge about specific technology used at your company but more about e.g. why a certain way to model your domain makes sense or how an unusual system design will pay off because of future plan X discussed with group of people Y in meeting Z - and here is the architecture diagram for it.
puchatek··on You Don’t Need Permission
Ideally yes. But i would be concerned that 6 months later the CEO asks me why sales aren't ramping up and doesn't want to hear that we were selling the wrong thing because of insufficient upfront analysis. Meanwhile the board might have heard a version of events from the CEO that subtly shifted the blame away from him.
puchatek··on Bosch opens German chip plant
The foresight is more about EVs conquering the car market and what it would take to be part of that value chain
puchatek··on A Project of One’s Own
They are an imperfect indicator for sure but i fear we don't have anything better.
puchatek··on A Project of One’s Own
> It's easy for something new to feel like a project of your own. That's one of the reasons for the tendency programmers have to rewrite things that don't need rewriting, and to write their own versions of things that already exist.

A more positive spin on what i feel is partly also driven by arrogance but I'm happy it's being pointed out. This is a thing and it's big.

puchatek··on Pesticides are killing the world's soils
If this was the only driver then the logical response wouldn't be a ban but rather more r&d spending to develop European alternatives.
puchatek··on In the Deep Sea, Animals Abound
I know, I know, oh oh oh!
puchatek··on Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes?
Obviously not cool enough! Same thing with racing bikes. All that gorgeous gear and Lycra and then you're supposed to announce yourself to the slow masses with that ridiculous sound!? No way!
puchatek··on I am sick and tired of hearing tech companies complain about developer shortages
As long as that same company doesn't complain about are shortage while they have their talent crawling in the crouch space it's ok
puchatek··on A brief history of people losing their minds in Antarctica
Leng
puchatek··on Send: A Fork of Mozilla's Firefox Send
That website or yours should be its own hn article.
puchatek··on The Origins of the Wirecard Scandal
I had rather Germany stay in the global small league the way it is than be seduced by perceived anglo-saxon economic success and turn into some crappy copy of the US. The US truly scares me.
puchatek··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
Doesn't look destroyable in the long-term
puchatek··on Effective altruism is not effective
Maybe political change would be the most obvious remedy but it's track record of helping the poor is gives ample reason to look for change elsewhere.
puchatek··on Young female Japanese biker is 50-year-old man using FaceApp
This meaning of "uncle" should make it into mainstream english.
puchatek··on Spartan School (2019)
I can sort of imagine how it could be seen as indoctrinating and be unintendedly traumatizing, but barbaric?
puchatek··on Moore's Law for Everything
> there will be dramatically more wealth to go around

There is already a dramatic amount of wealth to go around and yet it is held by fewer and fewer individuals and organizations every year. Just like there is enough food in the world to feed everybody. Our world is not optimized for distributing resources evenly. Can AI change this?

puchatek··on Magic Mushrooms Are Decriminalized in DC as of Today
Neurotoxic? I would like to see a source for that claim. Psychedelics are certainly not to be underestimated but from what I have heard the actual physical harm they can do is negligible compared to e.g. what alcohol does to your body. If you never drink because of that then maybe abstaining from mushrooms is appropriate. Otherwise I'd say it's taking some minuscule effect and blowing it out of proportion.
puchatek··on I Shipped, Therefore I Am
> Bill was wearing the same presenter shirt we all had to wear.

Can somebody explain?

puchatek··on Based Cooking
Would that explain why the list of recipes is almost entirely noon-vegetarian?
