puchatek··on Absolute truths I unlearned as junior developer (2019)
You're supposed to deliver value. But your org structure is dysfunctional I'd say you're also supposed to say boundaries and flag when you're spending too much time on things outside your core role

What year was this?
puchatek··on Dark Moon: The Inevitable Collapse of Luna
You can short several coins using USDC and Solana's Mango Markets platform. Also supports the other way, i. e. buying on margin.

Great way to lose a lot of money fast if you don't know what you're doing.

puchatek··on Kindle, ePub, and Amazon’s love of reinventing wheels
I ran into issues with sending the converted files to my Kindle and there were no error messages to debug by. I was probably doing something wrong but still.
puchatek··on Ask HN: Is there hope for micropayments?
When it's not being spammed into a standstill, Solana is a potential candidate that could facilitate micropayments in a trustless fashion. I'm not completely sure but the new Solana Pay might be a step in that direction
puchatek··on The ‘flawed five’ engineering productivity metrics
Just the fact that these are team-oriented and not individual-oriented makes them above average valuable already
puchatek··on Ten years of trying to meditate
I gave up after about 1,5 years which included a while year of almost daily body scans die about half an hour an even a full on Vipassana retreat. While my practice seemed to improve somewhat i simply didn't perceive any benefits within my psyche. It would not even calm me down. In the end it just didn't feel like it was worth the time investment.

These days i will pay attention to my breath at times when i cannot fall asleep. And that's about it.

puchatek··on Spreading rock dust on farms as a climate solution
It sounds like the potential of this technology is enormous so i would guess the distance would have to be very long before the emissions vaccine bet positive. Also there might be ways to combat that.

Our fastest carbon sequestration method that scales are forests right now and they are slow to grow and need dedicated space. So let's build those EV combines or whatever it takes to keep rock dust net negative.

puchatek··on Utilities Want to Convert Coal Plants to Nuclear; Skeptics Abound
The amount of differing opinions you got on this fundamental question is remarkable.
puchatek··on Utilities Want to Convert Coal Plants to Nuclear; Skeptics Abound
How can it be called "clean" when it produces toxic waste that requires its own infrastructure and expertise to be handled.

I think you meant "co2-emission-free-while-operating"

puchatek··on A beginner's guide to intermittent fasting (2012)
I would be very surprised if 500 kcal didn't register because of IF. Is that the claim though? I've been doing 5:2 for years and there they say "eat normally" on the off days. Don't overeat/compensate.
puchatek··on A beginner's guide to intermittent fasting (2012)
The most recent claim for bio availability of resveratrol seems to be that you need to pair it with piperine. Yep. Just like Curcumin.

I'm sure there's some science to back it up but it still brings to mind that old Marc Maron sketch.

puchatek··on A beginner's guide to intermittent fasting (2012)
You're completely discounting the effects of fasting on insulin levels. Low levels of insulin are correlated with higher rates of lipid oxidisation.

Not that this effect will outweigh e.g. an additional banana you devour because you're famished after fasting. But it is there. Counting calories is a good help in making sure you don't nullify it.

puchatek··on Spotify made a cowardly choice: to submit to the Kremlin
I think it can be compared to e.g. The Irish learning Gaelic. It's part of the identity for some and spoken in the west of the island by a few. The government invests in keeping the heritage alive and you see it e.g. in how names are written. But many Irish don't speak a word of Gaelic without feeling less Irish as a result. Ukrainian is a bit like that except it's easier to learn if you already speak Russian.

puchatek··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
You would say that a species advanced enough to throw quantum computing at theoretical math problems would be able to develop and act in ways that are not dictated by the laws of evolution.

After all we manage successfully to abstain from actual reproduction in much of the developed world to a degree that makes our societies shrink. Not exactly fit, from an evolutionary point of view.

You mean the original quest model, as opposed to the quest 2 i assume?

I'm that case the title could also be made more accurate
puchatek··on Kodi: An Open Source Home Theater System
this civil disobedience, is it just evening the score between you and Disney? Because that I would understand. What I'm criticising is the claim of piracy as some sort of moral fight of the oppressed. The noble filesharer uploading this year's Transformers instalment for the greater good. That's just giving it way more credit than it deserves.
puchatek··on DeFi risks and the decentralisation illusion
And this means ... What exactly? If it takes individuals willing to take risks then the crypto space has plenty of them. Are you saying that the point the authors are making is therefore not valid?
puchatek··on Kodi: An Open Source Home Theater System
Not consuming media offered by a corrupt system would be plausible. And there would be plenty of choices to source content directly from artists. Or make your own.

Pirating content is just something people do because it's technically feasible. To silence the cognitive dissonance and justify the behavior towards their peers and reconcile it with the rest of their character (presumably they would not steal physical objects with a clear ownership status), this narrative of a morally motivated fight against the big bad recording company or film studio is employed. It's intellectually dishonest.

puchatek··on Kodi: An Open Source Home Theater System
Try "cars are used to commute". Still insane? No, because that's a very likely usecase. Just like playing pirated content via a media center.

Now why would your reply completely ignore the actual likelihood of an event?

Good point. Although i think the preceding comment was using "destabilizing governments" as a catch-all for non-democratic and morally dubious activity.
