puchatek··on ChatGPT turned generative AI into an “anything tool”
Reminds me a bit of how everybody was cool with pirating software and media back in the day. To help the bad conscience there was a handy narrative of how the record companies were making a killing off of everybody so it was cool not to pay. But in reality it was just technically feasible. That's what enabled the behavior, not a few million Robin hoods coming together to do the right thing.

Similarly I feel creators need to make it impossible to have their work stolen for AI if possible. It will be tough though. They have half the world against them it seems.

puchatek··on My Kushy New Job (2010)
Nijmegen!
puchatek··on Amsterdam to use “noise cameras” against too loud cars
Monkey see Monkey do though
puchatek··on How to Produce Green Hydrogen for $1/Kg
Cars are the least interesting machines to benefit from a hydrogen economy IMO
puchatek··on LK-99 isn’t a superconductor
It's quoting several researchers verbatim which gives a clear picture of the compound in question. At this point it would be a scandal if the quotes were made up or taken out of context. I don't see what is sad about people believing it. Do you go back to the source on every article you read online or in print?
puchatek··on TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, NXP to jointly build semiconductor fab in Europe
Now if we also get back some drug manufacturing we might even be ready for the 21st century
puchatek··on TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, NXP to jointly build semiconductor fab in Europe
So "fab" is short for microchip factory? TIL
puchatek··on Microsoft is trying too hard with Edge
Oh wow. That's bad.
puchatek··on An ultra-sensitive on-off switch helps axolotls regrow limbs
I think i'd prefer a world where there are no landmines in Ukraine. I would even sacrifice the ability to regrow a limb of it helped us get there.
puchatek··on BlazingMQ: High-performance open source message queuing system
Same reasons any company open sources their software
puchatek··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
Depends on your definition of "doing those things". He led the companies that achieved those things. Tesla's case is more complicated than SpaceX's but in both cases he was at the top in a crucial moment.
puchatek··on Why SQLite does not use Git (2018)
Interesting usecase. The "git bad for everything else" commenter was probably unaware of it. That said, it's not very representative of what git is mostly used for and where there comparison with fossil is least favorable.
puchatek··on fMRI-to-image with contrastive learning and diffusion priors
As someone suffering from intrusive thoughts I do not look forward to a future where other people can see what I sometimes see in my head.
puchatek··on Johnson and Johnson sues researchers who linked talc to cancer
Damage control and intimidating researchers, it seems.
puchatek··on Defecting from North Korea is now harder
I've always been critical of the US, especially their foreign policy but if I had to make a choice I also would prefer that they be in charge rather than either of the other two. Or rather that would have been my answer before trump came along and the country entered into a state of hyperpolarization. How would I now wish for times like the G.W. Bush era where one would rightly get upset about things like the Iraqi war, US policing the world etc. As Europeans we were rarely a target of these things. The stakes were ultimately low for us. But now it's not clear anymore what will become of that country. And if the US ends up collapsing under its own weight, then I don't think we're headed for a bright future. And the stakes have never been higher.
puchatek··on Huge phosphate rock deposit discovered in Norway
Norway's suicide rate is average. That's Finland you're thinking of.
puchatek··on Too big to live, too loved to die: Big Tech's billion dollar curse of the free
I'm content with a tiny service called posteo from Berlin, Germany. It's a euro per month and it offers email and calendars with a lot of focus on security.
puchatek··on The Fermi paradox revisited: Technosignatures and the contact era
Not every intelligent life form out there will have the same homicidal baggage in their genes as the homo sapiens
puchatek··on The human cost of neurotechnology failure
In Homo Deus, Harari mentions research by DARPA (?) on a focus-enhancing helmet. This was reported some years ago already and the journalist who wrote the piece had experienced the effects first have in a sniping simulation. So to some degree the tech is already here.
puchatek··on New York City hiring top rat killer
Ah yes, the Australian solution to every pest problem.

puchatek··on New York City hiring top rat killer
They also work well for dumping used glass bottles etc. since they reduce the noise you hear when the class breaks inside
puchatek··on Brave launches private search ads
And what was the thing you thought you were buying?
puchatek··on Brave launches private search ads
I would pay Google 30 just for search+maps of it came without tracking and ads
puchatek··on Could Dissolvable Cranberry Film Replace Plastic Packaging Someday?
Because for this the stores and consumers gave do change their ways. Biodegradable plastic alternatives are compatible with the present convenience-centered consumer behavior.
puchatek··on Why it’s hard to buy deodorant in Manhattan
Let me guess, he got concerned about job security when all those monotheistic religions and their high horse morals developed and so he decided to actively prop up the supply side?
puchatek··on “Judas goats” were once key players in meatpacking plants
It's not weird that you like the taste of meat. But being unable to empathize with the sentient animals that we kill so thoughtlessly, and at such a scale, even when you're confronted with that fact in this poetic yet concise fashion is more than a little callous.
puchatek··on Legoland bond crisis threatens South Korea's economy
Might be a trade-off between propping up trust in the bonds market and safeguarding trust in democracy.
puchatek··on Legoland bond crisis threatens South Korea's economy
Depends what you spend the money on. If it's infrastructure then it's likely a wise investment.
puchatek··on FTX held less than $1B in liquid assets against $9B in liabilities
The last sentence is crucial and probably what will get SBF in trouble.
puchatek··on What if regular exercise is the best cognitive exercise?
Sorry to hear. It sucks being injured and taking out of the routine. Can you at least take walks?
