ptato··on It's time to halt starting any new projects in C/C++
There's nothing unsafe about integer indices because access to the array they index will incur bounds checks.

> "standard library" does not exist as a concept.

What?

ptato··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
When you're solving the sliding cars puzzle as a person you're not thinking of graphs. The experience of solving OP's puzzle is entirely different from the one you mention. In theory you could stop, write down the underlying graph representation and solve it that way I suppose. Does anyone do that though?

Nobody is going to take a bug report personally because it isn't the same as implying the project is pointless and even morally wrong whenever the opportunity arises.

> How much Rust did you use during that year? And how level of proficiency did you reach?

What kind of answer do you expect to these questions?

ptato··on Steve Jobs emails himself (2010)
There's something to be said about the system that allowed that to happen, and the people who made that system possible. I can't expect a person who is fearing for their life to make the most rational and compassionate decisions.
ptato··on Zig, the Small Language
It's been ~a year. I can't remember. It usually had to do with the dreaded self referential structures, or interfacing with c libs.
ptato··on Zig, the Small Language
That was not my experience.

I still fought the borrow checker after a year of using Rust.

And I found many situations while using Rust where I either needed to clone, or use unsafe where it's easier to make a mistake than in other languages because the syntax is extremely unergonomic and the memory semantics are much less clear.

The "People" section on the right on their github organization[0] shows members of the core team. It's also free software and surrounded by a passionate community, so it's pretty hard that it would die out. Andrew is irreplaceable though.

It's really 4. It doesn't count the sentinel, just the elements. `@sizeOf([4:0]u8)` is 5 though.
ptato··on Zig, the Small Language
I agree that array initialization syntax is weird a.f., but the other two points are very deliberate. I feel like you're implying they're legacy cruft.
ptato··on Zig, the Small Language
There's a lot of people in the community that feel this way as well but tolerate it. I think it's a certainty that whenever zig 1.0 arrives it will immediately be forked to turn the unused errors into warnings, at least for debug mode.

Another situation where I think the compiler is too eager with errors: unreachable code. A bare `@panic("")` won't compile, but you can "turn off" the error by doing `if (true) @panic("")`.

When I selected sports it got a bit buggy. Balotelli in Madrid, Maradona in Barranquilla.

ptato··on How safe is Zig?
Not an expert by any means, but my gut says that it would be very cumbersome and not practical for general use.

No, my hourly salary is 1/10 of that. I would still pay for the license for Sciter if I had a use for it right now, but it isn't a trivial cost.
ptato··on I quit the tech industry (2015)
I can't afford to leave my job, I would only be able to sustain myself for ~1 year. I think I would be satisfied if I only had to work half as much: 4 hours a day, 20 a week. Now I just need to find that job...
ptato··on Async Rust doesn't have to be hard
> I think a lot of Rust users would argue they don’t even care much about performance. They just enjoy all of the correctness guarantees the compiler can enforce

Aren't these correctness guarantees only for performance related factors though? (allocation/memory and concurrency). The rest of your program would be just as correct in any other language.

ptato··on Investing in lighting did great things for my mental and physical health
Street lights are too bright for sleep where I live, and I need to wake up with an alarm anyway so no waking up with the sun for me. It's a no brainer!
ptato··on How I Built Zig-SQLite
out of that list, rust doesn't offer "no macros and no metaprogramming" and "no hidden control flow". maybe these just aren't things you care about?
ptato··on Show HN: Muse 2.0 with local-first sync

ptato··on Kinopio
I did say "to me"!
ptato··on Kinopio
It's a hidden, opaque file. As far as I can tell, my browser doesn't tell me what its path is on my file system. That path and the file format could change with a browser update. Again, localStorage is nice, but this whole setup isn't comparable to a .pdf or whatever that I can have on my desktop.
ptato··on Kinopio
localStorage is nice but what I really love are files, in a folder, on my computer :D
