psygn89··on Two Git ignore files nobody told me about
This is great... one thing I wish is to be able to exclude are lines, for instance some lines in my config that only benefits the work I do. Some configs don't allow extending and that's where this would come in handy. Anyone have any tricks for that?
psygn89··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
Mmm, freshly grown yard pizzas, just like AI ~~used to~~ currently makes.
psygn89··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
Thanks, will do.
psygn89··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
Having basic expectations out of a smart watch isn't being nitpicky.
psygn89··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
What's it matter if I solved the problems then complained about it after? The bottom line is the battery life is garbage and not including a pedometer as a complication is silly.
psygn89··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
No, I'm not opposed. I got my watch like 2 months ago and haven't really messed with it since. Just baffled that the option doesn't exist. Which app do you use for that and does it affect battery life?
psygn89··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
I bought an Apple Watch recently so I can enter my workplace without much hassle (first world problems). Highly disappointing watch coming from a no-name Amazfit brand. I like my step counter, I don't care whether it's slightly off, I want to see it on my watch face - you'd safely assume it was possible, but no! So now I have to go through multiple menus and swipes to see it and it doesn't even show right away (takes several seconds at times). Don't get me started with the joke that is the battery life.

Apple Watch is probably Apple's shittiest product today.

For us we went with CSS modules, it just made more sense for us to stay closer to web fundamentals since our styles are used across different tech stacks. From my experience in the last year, AI is quite good at sticking to your css ground rules and gleaning css patterns from other files all while being underpinned by design tokens (can have linters raise raw values to question also). Gotta use whatever works best for the job!

psygn89··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I like how precise it got about the math behind the chain/gear/wheel/leg movement... these are the details that ain't no one really got time for.
psygn89··on Fastpotify
I mean, Amazon just sucks in general when it comes to design. I don't understand why Amazon videos (or whatever their purchased streaming app is) doesn't even queue up sequential movies automatically. It'll play the first Harry Potter movie, then skip to the third, fourth, and then the second, etc. It's not just HP , either.
psygn89··on Does whispering to agents in docs help?
Not sure, but if shared in the same docs as what we would read, it also allows us to skip over it with the assumption that it's a special set of instructions for AI.
psygn89··on Why some people mow a lawn better than others
Yeah, I think most people who have a yard wouldn't have played it for fewest moves... I don't know why but this whole piece reminds me of someone that never had to mow their yard, or AI that optimizes for something without carrying the full context or nuance of why we might not have gone with fewest moves optimization.
psygn89··on The Three-Second Theft: Why AI Voice Fraud Outruns Every Defence
I remember my JROTC instructor also running into that and how she said afterwards they have a secret phrase between them two as a way of verifying it's truly them.
psygn89··on How to stop Claude from saying load-bearing
I do UI design/dev and say "surface up" a lot. Although I don't use the term, in this area people call different container depths as surfaces (base, card, overlay as surface).
psygn89··on Bryan Johnson: I have an autoimmune disease. My stomach is eating itself
Guy is a weirdo, I remember logging into Twitter a few weeks ago and he was talking about his wife like she were some lab experiment. I don't know if it was a joke but it coming from a weirdo didn't help.
psygn89··on What to learn to be a graphics programmer
I think the people that go into this field today (and for a while now) probably do it for the love of it, not the pay or widespread fame of doing something extraordinary in the field. Not that you can't have it all, but not being some legend I, well, I think that's a strange reason for someone already interested in game dev not to step into the field?
psygn89··on Nano Banana 2 Lite
I think that should be illegal and misrepresenting. Lots of gray area with AI usage.

Beautifully stated reminder :)

The "choppy" JS keyframes helps give it a cinematic and authentic feel. /s
psygn89··on Slightly reducing the sloppiness of AI generated front end
You went from slop to outdated (as far as looks are concerned). But hey, what's old is new again, maybe we'll come full circle again.
psygn89··on Ask HN: Are most corporate SWE jobs performative?
Is it really that shocking to you? Twitter is a very narrow company compared to Microsoft, Meta, Google, and Apple. The system was already up and running, they probably kept the employees that built or knew the system deeply and fired the others. Apparently it had around 7,500 employees at its peak. To me that seems excessive for something like Twitter.
psygn89··on Smudging the game disc to make speedrunning 'SpongeBob' faster
My copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops that I bought from a rental store was corrupted in that sniper scopes didn't have the black scope silhouette when zoomed in, so essentially the whole screen just zooms in.
psygn89··on Accidentally deleted subscriptions for chat integrations (Slack and MS Teams)
Harsh, but fair.
psygn89··on Poll: How often do you check "newest"?
On Reddit I often sort by new for comments (which I know isn't the same as new topics), especially on thoughts over whatever thing I'm looking up. Does Hackernews have that ability or am I being blind?

I cringed when I saw a dev literally copy and paste an AI's response to a concern. The concern was one that had layers and implications to it, but instead of getting an answer as to why it was done a certain way and to allay any potential issues, that dev got a two paragraph lecture on how something worked on the surface of it, wrapped in em dashes and joviality.

A good dev would've read deeper into the concern and maybe noticed potential flaws, and if he had his own doubts about what the concern was about, would have asked for more clarification. Not just feed a concern into AI and fling it back. Like please, in this day and age of AI, have the benefit of the doubt that someone with a concern would have checked with AI himself if he had any doubts of his own concern...

psygn89··on I pitched a roller coaster to Disneyland at age 10 in 1978
I did a similar thing with a car design for Mercedes-Benz when I was around the same age. I had all the car drawing books and really thought I was going to be a car designer. Much to my surprise, they responded with enthusiasm and even sent me a Mercedes-Benz keychain :)
psygn89··on The peculiar case of Japanese web design (2022)
Having lived in Japan it feels they either they go all in on minimalist or maximalist. Some stores are quiet, others are obnoxiously loud and brightly lit to where you don't see your own shadow. Some magazines have a ridiculous amount of text on the cover, distorting the characters to fit with bold text stroking, others especially fashion might have one line if any at all alongside their logo. Game and book covers can be more on artistic/subtle side whereas in the west we often fight for your attention with character collages or action scenes.
