also see http://www.snpedia.com

"SNPedia is based on a wiki model, in order to foster communication about genetic variation and to allow interested community members to help it evolve to become ever more relevant. We anticipate that as the cost of genotyping (and especially of fully determining your own genomic sequence) continues to drop, we'll all want to know more - a lot more - about the meaning of these DNA variations. And SNPedia will be here to help."

pskomoroch··on Why Analytical Applications Fail
Comparing travelocity and kayak is interesting, but the best flight scheduling interface is ITA's demo app (seems to be down right now):

http://matrix.itasoftware.com/

It gives a color coded matrix of flights, and all the info is captured in one screen. I think orbitz and others use their optimizer as a backend.

pskomoroch··on Ask HN: How does Amazon EC2 compare to shared web hosting?
1) yes. 2) no. 3) no. ...there is a minimum guaranteed performance level for each instance type. for small instances (1 core), each user gets a minimum of 1/N of the system resources. If you fire up an extra-large instance, you essentially get the whole box to yourself, including I/O.

pskomoroch··on PyGTrends: Python API for Google Trends Data
Google Trends added functionality this week for CSV output of trends data. The code in the post is a quick hack that handles authentication and data munging, allowing you to query google trends directly from python. Should help people get started building some neat trends mashups.

that is an elegant library... hadn't seen it before, thanks.
pskomoroch··on Ask YC: How do you lose weight?
Here was my plan: http://www.datawrangling.com/hidden-video-courses-in-math-sc...

Watched videos on the archos while doing cardio at the gym...Add regular weightlifting where the weight increases over time (just find a program you like from one of the usual muscle mags from the newstands)... and be sure to do cardio with alternating sprints/jogs along with watching your diet. If you are new to lifting, or haven't much before then take it slow and make sure you use good form to avoid injury.

Thanks, I still have 25+ pounds to go as well :) I think a lot of people fall into the same vicious work/code/sleep or school/code/sleep cycle, especially with startups.

pskomoroch··on List of Datasets on the Web
Good point, some of these datasets are open/free...others are not. If anyone is going to use a "seemingly-free" data set in open source code, try to get permission under the appropriate license. There is a good overview of the difficulties here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Data
