psini··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
> We fix tail risks when we encounter them

You're suggesting to start fixing the issue after the blackout happens?

psini··on M 3.9 Experimental Explosion – 147 Km ENE of Ponce Inlet, Florida
I don't know how narrow your definition of "civilized country" is, but a majority of industrially farmed animals do not live the kind of lives you describe. I will link the EU regulation for laying hens for exemple, and maybe it will change your mind as to how farmed animals are treated? https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CEL...

A few numbers I personally find telling:

- 550 cm² caged area per hen (roughly 10" by 10")

- Seven hens per cage

- Cages 45 cm tall

- No requirement for ever going outside

I know some animals usually have it better (cattle) but industrially farmed chicken and porks really are miserable, without even going into the levels of stress and disease they go through.

My experience with all EU providers so far is yes, you do have to prepay, I think Hetzner for exemple was 20 euros when I signed up years ago?

Most likely they are unwilling to let customers pay later without any guarantee that they're good faith and solvent. Maybe it is a cultural thing? It's only my personal opinion but it never struck me as unreasonable.

psini··on We’re making Bunny DNS free
Not saying there are companies going above and beyond for customer service but getting a human answer at all when spending single-digit euros a month seems impressive enough; then again I am european so certainly biased :)

What would an american provider have done? Changed their pricing model for you?

psini··on Saying goodbye to Agile
Not much to add just wanted to say I share the sentiment and it matches my experience :-) . I'm not smart enough to NOT keep it simple; 90% of stuff I work on at $company is really a CRUDbox and I do NOT want to "astronaut-architect" the whole thing. Comprehensive test-suite, push to prod multiple times a day, feedback, dev.

That's it really.

psini··on GitHub's Historic Uptime

psini··on Have a fucking website
How are you going to convince your ie hair salon? Being cheeky but I imagine the conversation is going to go like:

- "What the heck is a domain name"

- "What the heck is a vps"

Probably going to doze off by the time you get to explaining an http server.

Don't get me started on the "plain text file". A website that looks like notepad.exe from '95?

It's worse than not sexy, most users would think the website got hacked or something. And I'm not teaching my hair stylist CSS

psini··on “Car Wash” test with 53 models
I'm guessing my car is old enough that is comes with a spark plug socket in the toolbag in the back along with the jack and spare wheel; you're right it probably isn't standard equipment anymore. (Car is Mazda from 2005 for reference)
psini··on The Hunt for Dark Breakfast
Only difference is a fried egg on top takes it from a Monsieur to a Madame :-)
psini··on The Hunt for Dark Breakfast
For a continental vibe see the french "Croque Madame"
psini··on “Car Wash” test with 53 models
Hmm have not tested but a spark plug doesn't really need shop tools to be replaced; maybe trying with a way bigger repair like "I need my transmission replaced" would bring different results?
psini··on Tiny sugar spoons are popping up on NYC fast-food menus
Crazy how you probably wouldn't get a slice of cheesecake factory cheesecake on the side of your Macdonald's meal; but never think twice about a medium soda that has the same amount of added sugar
psini··on Ohno Type School: A (2020)
Please don't let the comments deter you from giving the site a try! Ok navigation is finicky on mobile but this isn't a blog post, it's quirky, I find the humor funny and the subject matter deserves some artistic liberty on the presentation side
psini··on Pasta Cooking Time
I used to have a small burner, and would throw a lot of (cold) dry pasta into not so much boiling water. The water would just stop boiling from being cooled down from the pasta, and take 5-6 minutes to come to a boil again. Perhaps something similar?
psini··on Pasta Cooking Time
Can't speak for all italian regions as there are many differences; but this "spooning some sauce over naked pasta" right on the plate always struck me as positively un-italian. I would always expect the pasta and sauce to be mixed in the kitchen, and the pasta to be completely coated in sauce when the plate reached my table. Maybe it's something italian-american ?
psini··on Altoids by the Fistful
Great read, putting into some beautiful prose undigested feelings that have been stewing in my stomach for a while. Maybe I should find a cabinet that's worth painting the back of to me

psini··on Task Runner Census 2025
It seems biased that only GitHub was scraped, that seems like it would mostly exclude systems linked to other forges like GitLab CI.
psini··on Game Hacking – Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC)
I understand the sentiment but I can't bring myself to think valve is to blame or should be doing more. Getting a case of "Yes officer, I have an NO2 bottle in my trunk, but what it is plugged to is not actually the air intake for my car but something entirely unrelated, if you just take 2 hours to dig around and take it apart you'll also realize this"
psini··on IRS Direct File on GitHub
The ~12 levels of indentation and 5 layers of nesting are doing my head in personally but maybe my brainspace is too small.
psini··on Dodge Confirms Electric Charger Daytona R/T Is Dead as Unsold Cars Pile Up
I don't understand how the points you qualify as "copium" aren't valid? People have owned and enjoyed classic cars for exactly these kinds of reasons. Not everything is about datasheet numbers and performance.
psini··on So Much Blood
You can donate every 3~4 days in the US? In France I believe it is only once every 2 months for men and every 3 months for women!

edit: confused plasma donation with blood donation; it is still only every 2 weeks for plasma donations over here

psini··on What happened to the n in restaurateur?
Mea culpa, I did go over it. I guess as a native speaker the idea of calling a "Plat Principal" an "Entrée" is just so foreign to me I just cannot accept it... :-) Perhaps it is a regional difference
psini··on What happened to the n in restaurateur?
I don't know your french level but perhaps you read your quote too fast because it says: "Mets qui vient après les hors-d'œuvre et AVANT le plat principal". So the "entrée" is the dish that comes BEFORE the main dish.
psini··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
This is true; I can only speak from my experience and that of my peers but the hardest part every time was the "accepted quickly" section of your comment. I am also thinking the process is cryptic and uncertain on purpose to discourage people from even trying. Even though I have not personally seen requests get outright rejected, just drawn out to months.
psini··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
I see this misconception a lot for resigning France.

First, there are some "protected classes" of resigning that allow you to be eligible for unemployment right after you resign, for example: moving to follow your spouse, resigning less than 3 months after having been laid off, going back to study or... creating a company!![1] :).

Second, you are entitled to unemployment benefits even if you resign without "a good reason". The issue is that you can only request your benefits 4 months after having resigned. This leads to many people believing that you just do not get anything if you resign; because who wants to eat the 4 months of no income?

This 4 months waiting period is not advertised at all, and my complotist self believes it might be on purpose; if you don't know about it and don't request it, that's less money for the government to spend :^).
