pshapiro99··on I Went Looking for Dignity and found it here [video]
On this reflective July 4th, I went looking for dignity and found it in this Bob Dylan song. I played along using a Berklee interactive web page. You can, too. Experience dignity. And then tell others.
pshapiro99··on Show HN: I built a screen recorder with automatic zoom effects
I applaud you for building this web tool. It looks like it could meet my needs very well. I'll be trying it out later today.
pshapiro99··on My Sermon on Open Source
After I buy a church, I'll be preaching open source from the pulpit. I've already prepared my most popular sermon.
pshapiro99··on The Humble Virtues of a Simple Private Jet
Written in the style of Henry David Thoreau
pshapiro99··on To my ear, the octave ukulele sounds a little like a cello
Few people know about an instrument called the "octave uke," but to my ear it sounds as pretty as a cello.
pshapiro99··on Book Review (On YouTube) – ChatGPT for Dummies
I found this to be an excellent, short guidebook to ChatGPT. Recommended for librarians, college professors, entrepeneurs, and policy leaders. This book is most useful to people who have already have used ChatGPT and want to expand their knowledge.
pshapiro99··on Affordable Housing for Billionaires
I wrote the first paragraph of this and ChatGPT wrote most of the rest. Thanks, ChatGPT. You done good.
pshapiro99··on A trivia vending machine made with a Raspberry Pi
Using a Raspberry Pi to replace the coin box on a food vending machine is a stroke of genius.
pshapiro99··on Intangible gift ideas with open source in mind
In these tough economic times, we need to promote non-purchased gift giving -- normalizing that.
pshapiro99··on Show HN: Free and easy to use micro web tools
These tools are delightful. I wish there was contact information for the person who created this web site.

pshapiro99··on Ask HN: How do we help students that are stuck at home?
Use your social media to share links to free learning resources, including those offered by your local public libraries. Amplify (retweet) educators doing that.
pshapiro99··on Ask HN: I need ideas to impress fifth graders with technology
Trivia Vending Machine is a very lovely example of a Raspberry Pi project. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6gs8NtXPIk The "Untrue Zoo" can be created with LiveCode Open Source (free). See https://www.his.com/~pshapiro/UntrueZooHSHTML5/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37nfon24_aY Bicycle treehouse elevator can spawn a lot of conversation and thinking -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5FSWkjFPxs Getting kids to make their own screencasts (using free screencasting tools) is always interesting and useful. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11WT3H_DqU and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvSxhyJhfM8 Get kids into interactive fiction using Twine (free, open source). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gNKhqDr6pg
pshapiro99··on How do I start a group/discussion/meeting in my town?
Take your idea to your local public library. They might be able to help or give suggestions of paths you could follow.
pshapiro99··on Ask HN: How can we improve the world via creative, compassionate new ventures?
Open source is the route to a more inclusive, compassionate world. https://opensource.com/life/14/8/does-open-source-boost-ment...
pshapiro99··on Ask HN: Notable books you read this year
The Open Schoolhouse is a memorable book I read this year. http://theopenschoolhouse.com/
pshapiro99··on Ask HN: 100K, want to make a WISP. Profit, don't care
Probably first step is joining http://www.wispa.org/ Then track down articles such as this one (that I wrote). http://www.pcworld.com/article/245094/when_your_isp_is_one_o... Keep in mind that Google's Project Loon might undercut whatever you're working on. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Loon I recommend doing research on wireless community networks, too. Some fascinating stuff happening in that arena -- in locations all over the world. For follow up questions, contact me at @philshapiro (Twitter). I work as a public librarian and answer questions for a living.
pshapiro99··on Ask HN: What are the options for gathering talented people around project-to-be
One place to find people interested in your project is at local meetups or computer user groups. Search meetups to find if there is one that gathers people on similar topics. Consider starting a meetup, too. You might offer to make presentation at your local Linux users group, for example. Your product/service would be of interest to people doing web startups, so try to track down meetups of those people. Search Twitter bios for relevant keywords, too. I use Followerwonk https://moz.com/followerwonk/bio Hope this tips are useful. Contact me at @philshapiro (Twitter) if you have follow up questions. I work as a public librarian and answer people's questions for a living.
pshapiro99··on The FCC Wants to Eliminate Net Neutrality Protections. We Can't Let That Happen
I do not like the gutting of fish. I do not like the gutting of net neutrality. I will not stay quiet, said Sam I am.
pshapiro99··on Chess queen of Africa
Wondering if Phiona, the subject of this film and book, might be able to transfer her chess talents to tech fields -- such as Cisco networking, open source programming, etc... Read the book. It's very well written.
pshapiro99··on Ask HN: Are any startups working on text-to-speech?
I've also noticed this stagnation. The quality of the spoken voice TTS sound depends upon two things, I've heard -- processor speed and memory (RAM). Processor speed has increased dramatically in the past few years. I wish someone would design TTS that only works on the fastest processors. There seems to be too much lowest-common-denominator going on in this field.
pshapiro99··on Ask HN: Has Apple lost its way? Is their decline imminent?
You've asked a relevant question. Sadly, Apple lost their way a couple of years ago. http://www.techhive.com/article/248264/cupertino_is_becoming...
pshapiro99··on Brewster Kahle Should Be the Next Librarian of Congress
Brewster Kahle would be a wise choice for the next Librarian of Congress. His devotion to the public good is unquestionable. His great strength - the digital realm - will help the Library of Congress catch up to lost time, carrying our nation forward to where it needs to be -- leading, not following.
pshapiro99··on Ask HN: Books with a high signal to noise ratio?
