After you pointed this out I think I realized the target market - A tool to build a platform for the rising live stream direct sales model.

psds2··on Co-founder of Gokada found decapitated, dismembered inside New York condo
Do residents never get in the elevator with other tenants of the building? It would feel odd to open my door to complete strangers like that just because the elevator stopped on my floor before theirs.
psds2··on The accidentally resilient design of Athens apartments
This was hyperbole. I don't think I made anything up, I only exaggerated the concept of buying commercially produced muffins to be resold for 0 revenue to the purchaser.

A more grounded example of this behavior is well off parents buying their child's quota of items that are meant to be sold door to door out of a catalog to raise money. I don't know the name of this type of fundraising but this is a behavior I have witnessed many times. Parents buying overpriced crap out of a catalog so that their kid gets the extra credit and other perks offered by the school in exchange for this.

Here is an article I found by The Atlantic https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2019/11/pta-fu...

"PTA at a well-off school might raise a million dollars or more to pay for additional teachers’ salaries, band or orchestra instruments, a new library, iPads for classrooms, field trips, or other initiatives."

"I later learned that most of the shiny extras (and even some full-time aides and specialty subject teachers) at the other schools were funded by PTAs with budgets in the six and seven figures. Our school’s PTA had less than a thousand dollars in the bank."

In the United States teachers school supplies, equipment for band, gear for sports and other items that contribute directly to the quality of a students education and experience are funded by bake sales, booster clubs and other sources of funding that was not at all accounted for in the article you linked or argument you make. At some schools these programs bring in six figure $ from kids reselling boutique cupcakes their mom bought, probably taking a $2 loss on each. Other schools can barely manage to raise $200 at a bake sale.

The part of the article that mentioned vertical stratification to avoid horizontal stratification hit a chord with me. I personally come from a family of great means but due to unique circumstances spent much of my childhood living in low income areas and having friends whose parents worked fast food jobs. I think it's the best thing that ever happened to me and I think we would have a better society if more people had close interactions with people going through a different experience than themselves.
psds2··on Data structures and algorithms I actually used while working at tech companies
Many people would consider a 30 question take home project massive. You discuss your second experience as if it is some novel Utopian experience but when I read it sounds like an experience that was well suited to your strengths but wouldn't be suited to mine.
psds2··on Ex-Uber employees are being surprised by big tax bills
Thanks. The article initially read as if people had held their stock as if it was an investment and are mad they didn't sell to cover the tax bill sooner. After your explanation it is much clearer.

tl;dr Uber accelerated vesting of employee grants so that they happened during the lockout period. Also they could have proactively taken more out to cover taxes for the employee but chose instead to take the minimum out.

psds2··on U.S. backs down in fight with Harvard, MIT over student visas
Is the guy who decides visa policy not able to understand the plan coming from the guy who decides defense policy? We need the smart people here, not there.
psds2··on Resignation Letter
There was a (temporary) sand shortage due to a monsoon and availability does not imply sufficient supply. If there was no shortage of sand, even on the black market, the price would not have risen unless it was controlled by a cartel. Price capping is a good way to fight this kind of cartel because they were cornering the market by taking in all of the available supply and then raising the price.
psds2··on Google announces new Career Certificates and 100k scholarships
Not everybody is concerned about their career, some people are focused on providing a better life for their family. From that perspective brain dumping a certification feels like it has potential for high reward with minimal effort.

Brain dumping is the process of memorizing the answer bank for a test. There are many sites for these kind of certification exams that provide brain dumps or answer keys to study.

psds2··on Google to Invest $10B in India
You would tell me "if I am able to make it to the movie tonight I will leave you a missed call around 2pm" and then neither party pays for a telephone call or sms.
psds2··on Rackspace S-1
The space has a moat though - it takes a huge investment and long time to become competitive in this low margin space. Rackspace has shown themselves to be a market leader within this moat.
psds2··on Slate Star Codex and Silicon Valley’s War Against the Media
If a website that wants to be archived doesn't opt-in that is a failure of the website. If a website that doesn't want to be archived is archived that is a (possibly non criminal) trespass by the archivist.
psds2··on Taking over Azure DevOps accounts with one click
I don't see how your explanation shows Microsoft creating the incentive. Your argument seems to amount to "Microsoft is not creating a sufficient disincentive." The problem with creating a sufficient disincentive is that you draw a lot of attention and still run the risk of being outbid when a vulnerability is discovered.
psds2··on Slate Star Codex and Silicon Valley’s War Against the Media
He pointed to several channels including a twitter account, phone number and email. Are all of these channels equally appropriate ways to pursue civil discourse with the appropriate parties? Also, he only asked followers to be polite in parenthesis after this. Parenthesis are used for afterthoughts and explanations that deviate from the main topic. They also generally follow punctuation but the SSC blog post followed with the "be polite" bit after a paragraph break. For these reasons I do believe the "be polite" statement was disingenuous.
psds2··on Slate Star Codex and Silicon Valley’s War Against the Media
Why do you believe that a website would want the Internet Archive to archive it? There is clear evidence that some do not want to be archived (the existence of opt out option). What data shows that most do?

Facebook had a feature that showed your friends purchases you made on your timeline. People were pissed that their surprise gifts were ruined.

How can a low bounty act as an incentive?
psds2··on Cameo's CEO on how he plans to disrupt Hollywood
He could also just be getting paid $200 for his $50 cameo. Why would this be any different than the other VC subsidized consumer focused services?
psds2··on Ask HN: Is working as a developer on technical route until retirement feasible?
I believe the best path forward for something like this is to become a technologist in some specialty and then move in to advanced engineering/technology exploration at a big company. Find the kind of place with 7 CTOs and then get a role reporting to one of the CTOs managers. You work on 3-5 year research projects and you can just decide ahead of time which one will be your last.
psds2··on Ask HN: Is there still a place for native desktop apps?
VSCode, because of electron, doesn't allow you to have multiple windows that share state while working on a project. This makes it terrible with multiple screens.
psds2··on IBM to face trial for lowering sales commissions after deals are closed
Yes, the CFO can. Even more outrageous, if the CFO did then then the person seibelj knows would be forced to litigate the matter in civil court and ask to have the legal agreement enforced. There is a chance his state employment office would help, but likely the law is more complex than they are equipped to deal with.
psds2··on Ask HN: I can't specialize, how to differentiate myself?
You absolutely can specialize, you can even describe your current role in a way that sounds specialized - "Build/Release Engineer specializing in CI/CD and cloud native technologies."

As far as specialties inside DevOps - security, OCI, schedulers are general areas that have specialist roles available. Another option is to specialize in a tool or tooling ecosystem relevant to DevOps. For example, you could decide to learn AWS service offerings inside and out or specialize in webtech on bare metal and land a role at a company that has the scale to demand optimal bare metal deployments.

psds2··on Umbra: an ACID-compliant database built for in-memory analytics speed
Have you considered disaggregating your storage from your compute and using something like NVMe-oF or a traditional iscsi or fiber channel SAN to mount storage to your database server? With a block level storage fabric you can fail over instantly, run read only replicas and even support distributed writes in some cases.
psds2··on Laptop OEMs – make a proper high-end AMD laptop
It simply takes time to develop everything to make this happen. These high end ultrabooks require more time to engineer. One thing is certain, anyone developing this would surely not announce it in advance. Why piss off Intel until you have to?
psds2··on ISOC sold the .org registry to Ethos Capital for $1.1B
That RFC never went into effect. Perhaps it is a good thing that the illusion of .org trust has been shattered for many.
psds2··on An update on YC China
No it can't. You believe an acceptable response to Schrodingers Cat is that even if the cats alive maybe killing it is ok if it means you can sell the box. You then justify it by saying a lot of good things could come from the money we might get if we can sell the box.

None of those potentials are sacrificed, they just as much both exist and do not exist as they did before a hypothetical intervention based on human rights abuses.

psds2··on An update on YC China
I am sure China would gladly welcome YC and all the IP it has access to.

There is no question China presents an opportunity to generate capital returns on a scale that YC can no longer achieve in the more mature US venture capital market. They also present many risks that are hard to put in an equation.
