propman··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
There has to be a reason Facebook reminds me 50 times (yes 50 times) a year to put my phone number in for security reasons. That’s extremely unethical tbh and then I can’t recall if this is true because I’ve stopped using Facebook but I’m 80% sure they then filled out my phone number and just wanted me to confirm it.
propman··on Facebook former Messenger boss calls WhatsApp cofounder new standard of lowclass
According to that Forbes article on the front page, WhatsApp was speaking to Google hence Facebook’s huge offer and promises of monetization.

In other words, they’d be billionaires regardless and this guy is a prick

propman··on Google CEO Sundar Pichai to Meet with Top GOP Lawmakers
The significant backlash from both left and right and the hubris is skipping the senate hearing combined with Trump’s executive order threatens to actually hurt Google, forcing him to show up. Google is the most powerful lobbyist in US history so they’re pretty immune to all this and control all legislation passed that pertains to them but with the public bipartisan backlash, maybe they feel threatened.
propman··on Google workers discussed tweaking search after travel ban
Not toxic at all, that is absolutely true in this day and age. The most neutral news I watch is pbs which leans left. I’m not going to find illegal immigrant crimes on CNN for the most part, but I’ll find them all over Fox. I won’t find Trump scandals and hate crimes against minorities on Fox much but I’ll find them super highlighted on CNN.

Assuming there’s no bias is naive.

propman··on Google workers discussed tweaking search after travel ban
Regardless of whether this is a true story or not, Google needs to be regulated. I firmly believe that now. What’s stoppimg them from tweaking algorithms 2 days before an election? If I search Trump and see 80 women accusing him of sexual assault as the first thing popping up or his $3B net worth and great business deals is a huge difference in results. I know it’s not that simple at all but just making a general point how much power that is.

One counter example, every atttempt at censorship and media bias works oppositely. Look at yahoo article content, tilts quite a bit left and the comments are significantly right wing. Makes them more distrustful of true news.

propman··on China Once Looked Tough on Trade. Now Its Options Are Dwindling
They will apparently collect $7.5B from steel tarrifs from everyone by the end of the year. That 10% is going up to 25% in January and China has no real counter to that since they’ve already tarriffed all our exports including some which really harm them. And trump has threatened another 267B.

3% is a substantial amount but I doubt it’ll be close to that much. Supply chains will move to avoid tarrifs, parts will be shipped to Brazil or Mexico and then into the US. Or from China to Vietnam etc. I highly doubt it’ll get to 3% but if it does and the economic impacts of that thus far are fairly minimal, that would be significant. Makes up for the entire tax cut deficit and more when accounted for dynamic scoring but again it’s still monumentally dumb to count on tariffs for revenue which Trump has been stupidly bragging about. I do completely support Trump’s trade war thus far however with the end goal of fair and reciprocal trade and limiting China militarily through the economy.

propman··on If Jeff Bezos wants to help low-income people why not just pay them better?
Because he’d go out of business and then couldn’t: grow and create billions of wealth for everyone, create and improve new technologies and have thousands of employees gain a bunch of skills and then have to downsize and employ less or raise prices which will kill their competitiveness and harm millions who buy their product.

They are following the rules. The rules have given us soooooo much over the last 100 if not 10 years. They can be vastly improved but lazy, monolithic ideas that take no consideration of cause and effect is the wrong populist movement to effect meaningful change.

propman··on Google activated battery saving mode on multiple phones, then rolled it back
Off topic, but Google is getting killed this last week. I was pretty ticked at them ignoring Senator Warner’s request the other day and I think the hearings are usually a public circus. Google is just the most powerful lobbyist in Washington. They face no repercussions for anything.

In 2016, Trump (probably his admin he didn’t know anything) wanted to appoint the most badass anti monopoly czar in America. Probably the most momentous position in recent memory in terms of the future of society. Sounds like I’m exaggerating, but free speech, monopoly, hate speech, income inequality, spying, tracking everything, face recognition, Orwellian themes, and potential usurpation of nation states in favor of data harvesting multinationals was on the line. Google used all their lobbying capital to shut it down. Threatened to nuke every bipartisan bill and every conservative judicial appointment with the congressmen in their pockets. The WSJ had a great expose about this.

In the end the one man who scared the hell out of even Google and was poised to take down uber monopolies like att&t, Disney etc. was passed over for a pushover.

propman··on YouTube's tendency to push everyday users toward politically extreme content
Wow your comment and mine were flagged. Absolutely amazing. Not a single thing wrong with mine or yours.

Great critical thinking guys, have fun in your complete echo chamber. If you can’t even have a discussion from someone who wants one and is willing to have an open mind and asking questions, not surprised at all that the entire world is slowly rejecting the current orthodoxy that has given us peace and prosperity for 70 years. Let it all go down the drain due to sheer arrogance and stupidity.

If you disagree with anything I said, downvote and reply back. Only flag if I broke any rules or attacked anyone in any way. Cowards.

propman··on Bernie Sanders Introduces 'Stop BEZOS Act' to End Corporate Welfare
This is dumb, Bezos showed how the vast majority of people Bernie is talking about work part time. If you work part time, of course you’re going to be on government benifits...Full time employees get a lot of benifits aside from pay as well, some of the best in the industry.

That said, I have read a lot of stories about people being overworked, ambulances called frequently at work etc. but perhaps it’s becasue Amazon is one of the biggest employers in the world. Just like Foxconn suicide rates were the largest China Tech story for a year because something like 120 committed suicide but crunching the numbers, that was significantly better suicide rate than the rest of China because Foxconn employed millions.

propman··on A military technique for falling asleep in two minutes
I use high CBD tincture 25:1 and a sleep tincture composed of about 30% indica thc/cbd and the rest non addictive herbs.

I have a lot of pain and am unable to dissociate from it enough to sleep until I’m completely exhausted which several nights a week meant no sleep or just a few hours. These tinctures along with another pain medication (extremely low dose naltrexone, no side effects except better sleep for me) allow me to get a very good nights sleep 80-90% of the time which was a significant improvement in quality of life.

Give it a try if you are having no luck elsewhere!

propman··on Some Techies Are Shunning Silicon Valley for the Japanese Dream
Thanks for the reply! I like how everyone’s experiences in this thread have many similarities. Speaking Japanese is important, life there is great but developer pay is poor. There is some good advice on finding higher paying jobs here that might make you change your mind, but I agree with what you’re saying. I think this is definitely a possible move in the future for me.
propman··on Some Techies Are Shunning Silicon Valley for the Japanese Dream
Thanks for the insight! Glad you had a great experience and I’m sure others will find this helpful if they decide to make the move too. Looks like if you use the other advice here and get the decent paying developer job, it’ll be a great move.
propman··on Show HN: Remote jobs for people with disabilities
Thank you so much for doing this, I deeply deeply appreciate it and hope it turns out great and helps many.
propman··on Some Techies Are Shunning Silicon Valley for the Japanese Dream
Thank you so much for that detailed account! Seriously gave me more insight than any article or vlog I’ve seen. Really enjoyed that, and I’m sure your account will help others too. And props for being so unbiased and truthful. Happy for you and your wife and wish you all the best!
propman··on Some Techies Are Shunning Silicon Valley for the Japanese Dream
Can I ask you a few questions, if you don’t mind. Are you fluent in Japanese? Have there been any major instances of discrimination at work? I know you’ve been there 10 years, but is this a place you’d be happy for the rest of your life to start a family and potentially retire?

Please ignore if any of these are too uncomfortable or invasive.

propman··on Musk’s Money Mystery Intrigues SEC
This is the first comment I’ve seen approving that tweet and it’s every bit as deluded and cringeworthy as I’d expect. Musk never even apologized for that one did he?
propman··on Seaweed could be scrubbing more carbon from the atmosphere than expected (2017)
The Mojave Desert. It’s 48,000 square miles and almost uninhabited. We need 2% of that for almost 1000 sq miles. The Trump admin has approved that land for solar but the environmentalists are fighting hard against it, making bidding companies wary that it won’t be worth it. The location is perfect to supply Vegas, Phoenix, LA, and Texas easy. And can also do NorCal and more. It’ll get you 167GW capacity of solar. More than our current wind and solar combined and almost 10% of electricity generation of the country. Rooftop solar on the 30 biggest businesses in America would also yield a ton of solar, read a study the other day on that.

But...you do have a point even though the first part was wrong. Honestly, anything above 50% solar and wind is useless. Need to make up that cost via hydro, nuclear, or storage.

propman··on GE Engineer Linked to China Stole Power Plant Technology, FBI Says
This is NOT a cultural thing folks. I really want to emphasize this basic basic fact. There are over 4 million Chinese Americans living here, 99% the most hardworking, honest, brilliant immigrants in America. The lowest crime, some of the highest success etc.

There are a handful of people stealing technologies though and the point I want to make it ITS STATE SPONSERED. China gives you a handbook on how exactly to steal technology and how to bring it back. The STATE SPONSERED stealing of tech in specific fields is the problem and is estimated to lose the US $150B every year according to a bipartisan report not including the rest of the world. The CIA estimates thousands of government trained espionage operatives are present in California alone, far more than any other country has had ever and this doesn’t include the Confucious Initiatives all over the country. This isn’t a Chinese problem at all, it’s the government of China specifically CCPs fault that should be countered by government policy not mistrust.

propman··on Apple becomes the first $1T company
Your numbers are completely wrong...apple just had $50B in revenue for its weakest quarter...last quarter they had $60B and in their strongest quarter Q4 they had $89B pre trump tax cuts. If their current growth rate stays the same Apple will hit $280B revenue and $65B in profits.

I’m not sure how you are calculating equity but they have $240B in plain cash. They have so much in IP, and extremely low interest loans.

Market cap does mean something, it’s literally the most meaningful value the world puts on a company

propman··on [dead]
In the article it says that one of the reasons for the increase is due to upwards inflationary pressures and says 2.2% inflation.

The fact that we’ve had such tepid wage increases for the past decade that a measly .6% growth is the best in a decade can be viewed as pathetic in a vacuum or as the “biggest pay increase in nearly a decade”. Both are true, but overall I’d still say it’s good news in an area which has been extremely bleak.

propman··on Facebook Q2 2018 Earnings
I don’t use Facebook and greatly dislike the company but I completely agree with your analysis and think that’s a very common thought process to have. It’s a value play that has outrageous growth potential not to mention the best talent in the world, a huge pile of cash to acquire any competition, and absurdly low expenses. It’s well diversified now too with Instagram (worth over $100B and growing in ad revenue and users), WhatsApp (barely even monetized and the primary mode of communication in Europe and India), FB which wheathered the greatest political storm (simultaneous data plus Europe privacy) it’ll likely face without a dip in users in NA, and it has multiple other moonshot type plays that are likely to play out. It’s growing significantly faster than MSFT and GOOGL with comparable p/e. I can’t name a single growth stock that’s safer to invest in.
propman··on Facebook Q2 2018 Earnings
Why is it dropping by 25%? I’m buying after hours but it just wiped off 150B in market cap over decent earnings. Beat eps, similar growth, slight dip in Europe expected, no dip in Canada or US.
propman··on Investing Outside the Bay Area
Hit the nail on the head right here. You just can’t take the risks anymore. Everything is too expensive and it isn’t worth it anymore when Facebook dangles such a fat pay check in front of you. Entrepreneurship and free thinking has turned into copycat, quick bucks how to make quick money and complete group think. This is especially true in the sf start up scene
propman··on Investing Outside the Bay Area
We had $84B in VC investments in 2017, the most I believe ever and the second most in SF (2015 had more) and Santa Clara county increased as well.

propman··on A used voting machine from the 2016 election
There was a poll that normalized the data by assuming 98% of African Americans were in favor of Clinton based on a minuscule sample size heavily dependent on African American women which didn’t raise a red flag for me BUT that poll assumed that Black voters would come out with a greater turnout than for Obama which I thought was ridiculously untrue. Now this was a public poll and not their internals, but after reading that I placed some friendly wagers that trump would win certain states (he won 3/4 I predicted).

At the time I thought Clinton was a superior candidate to Trump, so I did message a Clinton campaign member my concerns and was ignored. I posted on a Clinton forum and got blocked for being a right wing troll and was told they were ahead in Arizona and competitive in Texas, so there’s no way they need to be concerned about the states I mentioned. The group think was absurd. No dissent allowed.

I bought Chasing Hillary by a NYTimes reporter and that absurd elitism and overconfidence and refusal to hear any real dissent was a recurring theme in that book. (I wouldn’t reccomend it, but the biggest lesson I learned there was the Clinton campaign played everything so safe. A dozen reviewers checking every joke, every line, every answer so every comment Hillary spoke became devoid of substance and too safe and many good plays were shot down if any of a handful of people disagreed with them).

propman··on eBay Is Conducting a 'Mass Layoff' in the Bay Area
That’s neat. High probability of employee taking your offer and not just shopping around because they are layed off and good for the employee who needs to make ends meet quick. I like that they try to exclude companies that had mass layoffs within the last 3 years as well.

Though if I were the employee, I’d take that severance and try to stretch it for a couple of months and depending on the engineering field, do a bunch of interview questions and apply at FAANG or other high paying ones. I feel like a large portion of layed off employees aren’t the ones who jump companies and get promoted regularly. Those ones can smell the end is near and jump ship probabaly beforehand. If finances are stable, getting laid off might be a great opportunity if one can maintain focus and is willing to put in the time.

propman··on European Commission fines Google €4.34B in Android antitrust case
So Microsoft is out of the phone business and basically the browser business. That’s the 3rd major phone OS. The rest are Chinese and there’s a huge cultural gap for them to become competitive in Europe. Google may have stifled OS competition, but that’s a lot more difficult market to crack than hardware competition for which google provided a huge opportunity for. It’s a lot easier making a phone that you know billions of users know the OS interface for.

If I was Google, I’d use this as a perfect PR opportunity to switch gears and start charging $250 per phone for licensing Android and then offer $50 per phone to put all Google related apps on their for a net gain of $200 a phone plus their previous market share. Chrome, Google, Android are too deeply infiltrated to even effect a single percent of sales to a new OS competitor.

Then slowly eat away at the competition by producing Pixel and related models which you can beat the competition for lower and mid phones by jacking up android licensing as you eat away at the market. End result, EU users pay hundreds of more per each phone and Hardware companies die off. Apple could also further jack up their phone prices.

propman··on Elon Musk calls Thai cave rescuer a 'pedo guy'
Wow that is so bloody obvious, I didn’t even think about that...Elon was constantly tweeting it out, updates and everything. You can help others and have it be PR simultaneously like Elon was doing, or you can help others and not be PR. So this was obviously PR for Elon, SpaceX,and Tesla.

One of the replies to his tweet made me change my opinion a bit too. Government officials who make the decision what to do should listen to the experts, but if famous people come the govt officials might listen to them instead and it could have been a disaster. She was saying how in these situation, rescue workers hate celebrities coming because they have to fight against their usually erroneous opinions, making it harder for the workers to get through to the decision makers

propman··on Elon Musk calls Thai cave rescuer a 'pedo guy'
I honestly think Musk was trying to help. He does this stuff everywhere, Puerto Rico, Australia etc. it does seem PR, but also very risky and I like that he does unorthodox not by the book things.

I also understand he sucked the gravity of the praise there with news articles mostly mentioning him and I understand how divers who risked their lives might feel constantly being asked about the sub.

This diver was rude, but if he’s been asked this constantly I don’t blame him really.

This is one moment where he should have kept quiet on twitter and it would have blown over, but he fired back which is in poor taste, but still not too bad.

But the second he called him pedo...that was the lowest point of Elon Musk ever. It was petty, narcissistic, rude. His teen fanboys will no doubt harrass and dox this hero, he’ll have this moniker on him forever, and it’s just because Elon was attacked. Whenever he feels unfairly attacked he always attacks back, sometimes very very rudely. I hope he gets sued for millions. I don’t blame his journalism attacks because they were fairly justified, but this was really messed up.
