projektfu··on Show HN: Make cursed fonts like Times New Bastard
I'm wondering the same thing. Something about making proportional fonts fit into blocks for Chinese text?
projektfu··on The "Windows XP Box" (2003)
Now you could maybe cram the guts of a DGX Spark in there and have an incredible sleeper machine.

projektfu··on Montreal adopts bylaw banning insults against police, municipal employees
It's pretty interesting how many comments ask questions that were asked by the article. Not surprising, as I also didn't read the article before reading the comments. But it is a well-written news article.
projektfu··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
On Windows I also use QuickAccent, now part of PowerToys. I could never remember the Alt-code for the em dash. Apparently it's Alt-0151. With QuickAccent I hold a letter and right or left arrow and up comes a menu of related symbols. It's pretty neat.

On Mac, it's option-shift-hyphen. Option-hyphen gives the en dash.

On Linux, you may be able to type Ctrl-Shift-U to get unicode entry and type 2014 and Enter. 2013 is the en dash. Again, I will never remember that.

projektfu··on English: A vs. An
Except words ending in "ma" that came from Greek (o problema, o estigma) which are masculine, while those from Latin (a alma) are feminine as expected. In Spanish it's basically the same. A Spanish teacher gave me a nice mnemonic: "-ma is masculine, like your mother." I've never forgotten that.

It's been a real drag being called "null" when your first name is blank.
projektfu··on I don't like passkeys
Multiple sites (e.g. Microsoft) currently ask me to use the passkey to log in after I enter my username, but the passkey doesn't seem to be stored anywhere. I usually will end up scanning the QR code to check if it's on my phone and get a negative answer. Then I have to go through the regular password + 2FA ritual I was already ready to use. After that, I am not given the option to store a passkey on the device I am currently using or on my phone. Process repeats next time. So much fun using passkeys.

I think there are two sites where I can actually log in using them.

I also don't like the way the pop-up is always so automatic and interrupting. Why not a button like other ways to log in?

projektfu··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
I've lived some places where 4-way stops were just abused, like Sugarland, TX. England and Ireland are full of roundabouts, some of which are incredibly small, just a painted dot, and some are giant multi-lane white-knuckle nightmares. There are places with good traffic light setups, but traffic lights generally suffer from the same problems of sometimes stopping traffic for no good reason while also encouraging excess speed.

In my current city, I can identify at least 3 intersections that would be better as a roundabout, but I don't have my hopes up.

There's also "Helix rebuilding a screen in the Shopify mobile app using Swift and Kotlin" which sounds like a caption but there is no video or image.
projektfu··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
Sometimes it is a synonym for ACH, but it could be processed more literally as a check, with a check image and everything, and something like "Pre-Authorized Payment" written on the signature line. Usually they also let you specify the check number, if you wanted to have it follow your own sequence. Amazon Business was doing this with invoice payments up until January of this year.
projektfu··on iPhone Duo
As an American, I find Fahrenheit much better for ambient temperature and body temperature, but I hate seeing it for things like melting points of materials and the like. I'm always thrown off by statements like 800-degree pizza ovens, because once you get above 500°F it is out of the realm of everyday measurements, and I have trouble mentally separating the values for metals melting in °C and "gee whiz" temperatures in °F.

All scientific and engineering use should probably eschew the customary measurements, even in the news. For example, in aviation, they use °C now unless your airplane is very old. Unfortunately, in the US we still use inches of mercury for pressure, both knots and MPH but never km/h or m/s, etc.

projektfu··on iPhone Duo
Assuming you mean (3 ft / 2) - 12 1/16 inches, it's about 6 inches, which is probably the accuracy you need. But it's exactly 5 15/16 inches, which is also easy to do in your head. Carpenters do it all the time, and even a doctor can.
projektfu··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
The takeoff roll is only a minute or so to lift-off, so it's possible. But also somewhat meaningless, as an airplane can take off for free in high-enough headwinds.
projektfu··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
It won't likely perform better as it ages but it may continue out-performing a fleet that tends to hold its value. If the maintenance cost of the electric motors and batteries along with the turbines operating at reduced power is better than the maintenance cost of two turbines that are operated at 100% power to take off, it could really pay off, as that tends to be a very expensive part of the operation. Airframes also often appreciate these days, as it is very expensive to buy a new one and an old one is somewhat proven.

This plane basically has to outperform a Saab 340.

projektfu··on I trained a small transformer in 1.5hrs and it beats many LLMs
At the bottom of their class from the worst school in the country.
projektfu··on I trained a small transformer in 1.5hrs and it beats many LLMs
Yeah, before CrossFit it would be almost unheard of in the general population, except perhaps with the horseracing community.

Still, emergency doctors, especially in a hot place like India, should be aware of it.

projektfu··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
I can see that there is no point in continuing this conversation. I wish you the best and that you may never experience depression with your wonderously, fabulously ecstatic life.
projektfu··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
It's nasty because of the assumption that someone who is taking medication has "buried the cause further", in other words, done something to paper over the rent in their psyche that could have been fixed some other way.

In my case, I had depression for no apparent reason, and I went through dynamic psychotherapy, which is basically about finding that reason. That failed, I got worse, and basically was disabled after a few years. I finally found a medication, venlafaxine, that actually worked. My depression abated, I was no longer disabled. It has well-known withdrawal effects, so I tapered off of it very gradually. When I stopped, I was no longer suffering major depression. There was no removal of any particular cause.

projektfu··on typ.ing
I enjoyed playing with this. I should do some typing tutor on my new keyboard so that I can get faster at using it.

I think a typing tutor is better if it can re-sync when you have an insertion or deletion error. That is, if you miss one letter but everything else is correct, or if you mash an extra letter but everything else is correct, that is one error, not a full list of errors. It is distracting to have to look at your output to make sure you didn't make one of these mistakes.

projektfu··on Show HN: Huzzah – a novel approach to coding with AI
Let's be honest, programmers can't program from UML specs.
projektfu··on The Amazon tax
I went through that same search a couple times. I felt that this was such an obvious thing that I was amazed that it didn't exist on Amazon, Aliexpress, or anything else.
projektfu··on The Amazon tax
I don't know how it is for large businesses, but if you're a small business, and you put your own business name as a search keyword for your ad buys, fully half or more of your ad spend will be your existing customers looking for your website, phone number or address. If you stop spending on it, they will still find you, but a competitor will probably show up above you. I am not sure this matters.
projektfu··on Applying a photosynthetic process to treat “dry eye”

Hilarious that you list all the supplements before the generic Restasis/Cequa, which is indicated for KCS.
