programLyrique··on Copy-and-Patch: A Copy-and-Patch Tutorial
There are some experiments in using copy-and-patch for the R language (after Python): https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3759548.3763370

From a master thesis: https://www.itspy.cz/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/it_spy_2025_...

programLyrique··on A PhD in Snapshots
His bio gives a more detailed description of the startup: "after his PhD, Bharath co-founded Computable a startup that built better tools for collaborative dataset management", which seems to not exist anymore.

But he came back to drug discovery:

"Bharath is currently the founder and CEO of Deep Forest Sciences, which is building an AI-powered suite for drug and materials design and discovery."

programLyrique··on On eval in dynamic languages generally and in Racket specifically (2011)
About how eval is used in other languages:

- in Javascript: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-642-22655-7_...

- in R: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3485502

programLyrique··on Chocolate intake and risk of type 2 diabetes: prospective cohort studies
I mostly eat 90% and now find 85% too sweet (but 100% too bitter). I think our taste just adapts to the level of sweetness after some time.
programLyrique··on Dependently Typing R Vectors, Arrays, and Matrices
Another recent (2020) work on types for R: "Designing types for R, empirically" https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3428249
programLyrique··on Why Lisp?
Accessing the code part and modifying during execution is actually rather easy in R. Functions such as substitute or quote are commonly used and a language expression in R is a list that you can edit and evaluate back.

The internals itself in R actually sound quite lispy: both values and codes are SEXP (S-expressions).

R is inspired by Scheme and Common Lisp; it has first-class functions, multiple dispatch.

https://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~ihaka/downloads/Interface98...

"This decision, more than anything else, has driven the direction that R development has taken. As noted above, there are quite strong similarities between Scheme and S, and the adoption of the S syntax for our interpreter produced something which “felt” remarkably close to S."

programLyrique··on Physics Student Earns PhD at Age 89
Are you referring to CIFRE-funded PhD thesis?
programLyrique··on Estimated 216,000 children abused by French Catholic priests, report finds
They asked Ifop, a polling institute, to do a survey. The survey used a representative sample of 28 000 French people (in French, https://www.lefigaro.fr/actualite-france/les-cinq-chiffres-c... )
programLyrique··on Faust: Functional programming language for sound synthesis and audio processing
What impresses me with Faust is the sheer number of targets they have: most audio plugin formats out there, but also web audio plugins, the new SOUL language (https://soul.dev/), Rust, C++, C, LLVM bitcode.
programLyrique··on Faust: Functional programming language for sound synthesis and audio processing
It seems to me, after quickly reading liquisoap documentation, that Faust is much more low-level: liquidsoap would connect different audio effects, whereas Faust can be used to write the audio effects, at the level of sample-by-sample processing.
programLyrique··on France's 18-year-olds given €300 culture pass
Do they tax young people a lot?

Young people are not likely to earn money a lot, or at all in France, and so their income tax is 0%...

https://www.blevinsfranks.com/news/article/French-taxation-i...

Up to €10,084: 0% (a student job would not make more than that)

€10,084 – €25,710: 11% (a young person without a university degree would not probably earn less than 25,710)

programLyrique··on How image search works at Dropbox
Image search is one of the pain points when you want to deploy your own cloud, and what I'd miss compared to Google Photo or that image search in Dropbox.

Is there something like that in Nextcloud for instance? I am aware of a basic face recognition app (https://github.com/matiasdelellis/facerecognition)

programLyrique··on The French armed forces are planning for high-intensity war
A new one is planned: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_French_aircraft_carrier
programLyrique··on Caramel: An OCaml for the Erlang VM
There is ocamljava: http://www.ocamljava.org/

But it does not seem to be maintained.

programLyrique··on TV detector vans once prowled the streets of England
They might not come, but they will send you a letter to ask you if really, really, you don't have a TV.
programLyrique··on Paris to ‘get rid of 70k parking spaces’
The pass navigo (transportation card) was actually refunded for the period of the massive strikes of December 2019...

https://www.iledefrance.fr/les-passes-navigo-du-mois-de-dece... (in French)

programLyrique··on Paris to ‘get rid of 70k parking spaces’
There is actually something called "service minimum" by law for public transport workers during strikes. Without it, there would not be any metro or RER at all during strikes in Paris.
programLyrique··on Paris to ‘get rid of 70k parking spaces’
The metro in Paris had an objective of more than 96.5% of reliability in 2018 according to https://actu.fr/ile-de-france/paris_75056/du-rer-b-ligne-13-... (in French)

All lines fulfilled this objective except line 4, with 96.1%

AS for RER, there is an official governemental website that gives the numbers: http://www.qualitetransports.gouv.fr/les-chiffres-de-la-ponc... (in French) The most reliable one in 2020 is the A with about 94% of reliability and the worst one was RER B in March, with 78.9%.

programLyrique··on Dutch journalist gatecrashes EU defence video conference
Other journalists in mainland Europe.

And then they publish articles in the native language of their country.

In France: https://www.lefigaro.fr/flash-actu/un-journaliste-s-introdui... In Belgium: https://www.rtbf.be/info/medias/detail_un-journaliste-neerla...

And so on...

programLyrique··on Catala: a programming language for socio-fiscal legislative literate programming
There is an example of the US tax code on the landing page of website (https://catala-lang.org/en/) so they actually seem to have also tried the language on English-written law!
programLyrique··on Dozens of scientific journals have vanished from the internet
You can add all articles afterwards (even though it can be tedious).

There is actually a tool that is supported by HAL that makes it easier to quickly add all your publications by just giving your name: https://dissem.in/

For instance, it automatically fills in all the metadata for your publications.

programLyrique··on Dozens of scientific journals have vanished from the internet
Actually, although it is mainly directed to French researchers, nothing prevents researchers not based in France to deposit their papers there.
programLyrique··on Can we do better than our C compiler?
What about superoptimization? For instance, Stoke (http://stoke.stanford.edu/) or Souper (https://github.com/google/souper). They will not find all optimizations of course, and program equivalence is undecidable indeed, but they are a good shot at optimal compilation, I would say.
programLyrique··on Bitoduc: A French dictionnary for CS related words
In spoken French, I think people usually say ordinateur or (ordinateur) portable (for laptop) though.
programLyrique··on Create diagrams with code using Graphviz
A library of pgf/tikz that requires lualatex can do graph drawing. It is called "graphdrawing" actually. It can do the layout automatically and so on. You can add new automatic layouts using lua.

It's described in part IV of the pgf manual.

programLyrique··on How to estimate Covid-19 infectiouness in the French contact tracing app
And in the source code: https://gitlab.inria.fr/stopcovid19/robert-server/-/blob/fea...
programLyrique··on Show HN: Flowlingo – practice a foreign language with tech news
Reading the reviews on Google Play, it seems there is some in-app purchase, but on the website, I see no indication paying is needed at some point ( sounds like all is free actually when reading the website) so I am confused...
programLyrique··on Tibetan musical notation
Yes, you can create subpatches (http://write.flossmanuals.net/pure-data/subpatches/) and abstractions (http://write.flossmanuals.net/pure-data/abstractions/).
