profsummergig··on How Thailand Resisted Colonization
I forgot to mention another reason earlier: Rape. European colonial powers were also all over the world so that their men could have easy access to rape without consequences. (Read up, e.g., Columbus' diaries.)
profsummergig··on How Thailand Resisted Colonization
However:

The European colonial powers were not all over the world to enforce "European cultural values". They were there to extract minerals, lumber, labor, and agricultural produce for as little a price they could pay.

profsummergig··on Show HN: Needle2: 14MB agentic LLM for phones, wearables, smart home and robots
So is the challenge, now, getting the right sort of data?
profsummergig··on Show HN: Needle2: 14MB agentic LLM for phones, wearables, smart home and robots
That sounds like an enormously expensive exercise.

Could someone please share how such open source micro-LLMs might have been created?

Do the creators take something like DeepSeek, and then delete most of the neurons to whittle down the size?

profsummergig··on Unexpected events and prosocial behavior: the Batman effect (2025)
Have read about 50-100 Psychology paper abstracts. This is the first time I've understood a Psychology paper abstract in the first read. Kudos for that.
profsummergig··on Title 7 Disparate Impact Liability Makes Almost Everything Presumptively Illegal
Obama forced something similar on schools:

https://www.ed.gov/laws-and-policy/civil-rights-laws/race-co...

The policy warned schools that racial disparities in punishments could trigger federal civil rights investigations under a "disparate impact" standard.

Ergo, presumably, if a school had a single purple student. And that purple student was punished for something. Then the entire school had to also be punished for the thing. To not fall afoul of the law. (Or maybe I'm just too autistic to have a nuanced take.)

(Trump rescinded it.)

profsummergig··on Lost my phone at the office. Claude suggested tracking Bluetooth signal strength
Seems like the divide between the voters who vote in the Primaries and the voters who vote in the actual Election. Vocal minority vs. Silent majority.
profsummergig··on Kelly Criterion Simulator
In case the author is here:

What's the difference between "win probability of win" and "odds", please? The seem the same thing to me.

And also, what are "decimal" vs. "american" odds, please?

Thanks.

profsummergig··on Google kills Earth AI generator after one day
I thought Bard was an acceptable name. But I think Gemini is better. The "G" associates better with Google.
profsummergig··on Google kills Earth AI generator after one day
What red flags would the name "Bard" have raised for you if you were on that team?
profsummergig··on OpenAl, Anthropic ask U.S. government to consider slowing down Al
The U.S. Government can only slow-down some AI in some parts of the world... unless it decides to instigate a world war.
profsummergig··on Hunter-gatherers introduced fish to a mountain lake 7000 years ago
Maybe the snakes have been eating the fish eggs / baby fish?
profsummergig··on After the AI Crash
a contrarian take that's been eating away at my mind lately:

- if every autonomous self-driving car is going to need some sort of edge AI data center nearby (for instantaneous exceptional incident handling)

- if every household robot is going to need some sort of edge AI data center nearby (for instantaneous exceptional incident handling)

- if there are going to be millions of self-driving cars and autonomous robots joining us in the next decade

...then we will need lots more semi-conductor chips, and data centers in lots more places, in the next decade.

profsummergig··on The Fabled Flatbreads of Uzbekistan (2015)
Eggplant, after being charred on an open flame, is an incredibly versatile and flavorful ingredient to put into other vegetable dishes. Shout out to the Indian baingan bharta of course. Ratatouille made with charred eggplant is simply amazing.

The word "non" used throughout the article is the origin of the term "naan bread" from Indian culture (the Central Asian Turks/Mughals who ruled most of India for centuries developed "naan bread").

profsummergig··on Chip stocks slide in US and Asia as AI jitters rattle investors

This will only lead to hyperscalers getting wealthier.

profsummergig··on Terence McKenna's Mega Bad Trip (2025)
Can you see your other body? Or is it just that you feel yourself in 2 bodies?
profsummergig··on Terence McKenna's Mega Bad Trip (2025)
Thank you. I was curious about what the experience is like.

Now, can you share what an OBE feels like?

profsummergig··on Show HN: I replaced a $120k bowling center system with $1,600 in ESP32s
I want to start working with arduino/raspberry pi/esp32/sensors.

What would be a good source to buy these in bulk (along with accessory components. e.g. wires etc.)?

profsummergig··on Show HN: Bribes.fyi – Built something to report bribes
Sunlight apps will always have the problem of anonymity.

1) Preventing malicious fake reports by anons.

2) Preserving the source anonymity of real reports.

Finding a working way out will be very consequential.

profsummergig··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
I'm generally a fan of laissez-faire.

But it's refreshing to see common-sense policies being implemented.

Like another comment posted: platform failures need higher-level (govt. in this case) intervention.

profsummergig··on The Second Life of Sanskrit
Taleb says that some languages are only meant for ritual.

IMHO, Sanskrit quotes sound cool to those who know Prakrit languages just like Latin and Greek quotations sound cool to those who know Romance languages (and even to those who know English, like myself).

Yes, there is a revival, and an interest. But Sanskrit has always been known to the "priestly" class even though they never conversed in it. This new revival is not going to lead to actual communication, just a lot of visual art based on the script and quotations. IMHO.

profsummergig··on Mawlynnong, India, transformed by tourism, bans visitors on Sundays
There are no consequences for bad behavior in India if you are powerful enough (e.g. a police constable is a very very powerful person who can be filmed taking a bribe or filmed thrashing some innocent person and nothing happens to them.)

When they are able/willing to enforce consequences for bad behavior, most of India's civic problems will evaporate.

profsummergig··on Creatine doesn't just build muscle. It may also help fight cancer
The body makes its own creatine.

How do we know that's not enough and needs to be supplemented?

Wonder why he didn't do that instead of selling BTC to raise dovidend payments?

profsummergig··on Big Tech Has Suddenly Flipped on the AI Jobs Wipeout Scenario
I recently tried to get customer service. I think it was from the DMV for my state. The website asked me to use the AI bot first. Completely useless. It took a phone call with a human to somewhat resolve the issue.
