primroot··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Since you are so concerned by October 7. Do you know how many of those killed were soldiers? Do you know how many were killed by the IDF?
primroot··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
It's called R2P.
primroot··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Please provide sources. Genocide is not a matter of cherry-picking or of opinion. People who take this debate seriously look into context and evidence with a level of detail that goes beyond what can be covered here. Anyone interested in arguments and counterarguments will inevitable have to refer to authorities in the matter who have the background, time and resources.
primroot··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
"Israeli fighter planes have also attempted to kill children by dropping thousands of booby-trapped toys on Lebanese villages and towns. The Israeli occupying forces have used this method through the years and continue to do so, the most recent example being when booby-trapped toys were dropped on the town of Nabatiyah, killing and injuring children and permanently disfiguring others." https://www.un.org/unispal/document/auto-insert-180386/

Yes. Except there are credible reports of Israel also doing this in the past. primroot··on Amount of work that once bought an hour of light now buys 51 years of it (2017)
I agree, but let's not forget that the more (semantically) obvious reason why people get locked out of wealth has more to do with not being able to take it than with not being able to produce it.
primroot··on Amount of work that once bought an hour of light now buys 51 years of it (2017)
I believe replacing "weapons" for "systems" makes the statement more in line with concrete reality.
primroot··on The Coming Technological Singularity (1993)
I upvoted when I had read up to where you wrote "doesn't help with." I felt I was reading my own thoughts when I read the last two sentences. I think it is not just software design that will become shortsighted we may even see less interest in improving programming languages. I've always hoped for people to come up with some mathematical insights (beyond functional programming) that will describe code organizing structures in a more sensible way, so that experience no longer appears as the main argument for software patterns being tools to manage complexity. Now a programming language is just another language to be modeled, and its texts generated and proofread by a fallible human.
primroot··on Bing Chat now has ads
At least it's not social media disinformation. \s
primroot··on Ask HN: Why don’t governments target zero inflation?
I agree with the sentiment that there is significant absurdity hiding beneath all the economic abstraction around employment and investment, which obscures the origin of money as a requirement. The way I see it (and this is a rather centuries old observation) is that the economic system is set up so that most of the population requires earning money for their survival. Earning money is a social requirement not a biological one. But if the resources are cheaper now that money is more valuable, what is the problem with earning less money for one's work? The problem is that some people would rather keep charging the same for what they sell. If one doesn't own much, then one can't afford waiting for a better deal. In this situation having power means owning money, houses, land, machinery and little debt. This makes workers require the same salary in order to survive and perform their jobs, this contributes to the (abstract pseudo-)problems of less employment, less consumption, less debt obligations being fulfilled. The real problems is on the one hand the resources required for survival being out of reach, and on the other resources, machinery and skills going to waste. For many, directly tackling the real problems may come dangerously close to disregarding social requirements. Hence, we keep talking about this problems in abstract terms, so that important members of society can live off the rent, by convincing the rest, by whatever means necessary, of the survival-money exchange rate. Money is a peaceful mean to make them follow orders.

primroot··on [dead]
Yesterday, Andre Conte https://twitter.com/AndreBConte, a well-known Panamanian human rights activist was taken by the Panamanian police to face accusations of stealing data from government servers. More details here: https://www.prensa.com/impresa/panorama/fiscalia-pide-una-au... . Given Conte's vocal human rights advocacy activities, criticisms of the government, given the Panama's long track record of impunity regarding to human rights violations (most recently the violent treatment of protestors), it is suspected by many that this is a move by the Government to abuse the courts in order to silence and intimidate its critics. This case has little precedent in Panama, and the ineptitude of the court systems to handle cases regarding information security came to light recently with the failed attempt to convict an ex-president (Ricardo Martinelli) for wiretapping. Are there international organizations that could help in this case? For example, helping to determine the validity of the evidence presented by the government, etc.

Résumé/CV: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rle9MObJ7SbeihFE37q45X58kVl...

Email: gabriel@mc2.pw

Position: Backend Engineer / Full-stack Engineer

Intro:

I am software engineer with 10 years of experience working with a wide range of technologies (the last 6 years, I've developed applications using Node.js). I welcome tech skill checks and interviews ( here is an example of my performance https://triplebyte.com/tb/gabriel-pena-phzees7/certificate/t... ). I am open to opportunities that require learning new technologies.

primroot··on Autism and Invention Are Connected
That's an interesting take. I have seen the disability-as-adaptation idea in the past but nothing regarding Technology exacerbated upside. For instance https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_vs._farmer_hypothesis and https://slate.com/technology/2016/06/the-monkeys-of-south-am... .
primroot··on Dozens of Al Jazeera journalists allegedly hacked using NSO Group spyware
Less than a decade ago NSO Group assisted the then president of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli, in spying his political adversaries. Around the same time Martinelli requested similar assistance from the US, but they refused his request (according to Wikileaks).
primroot··on In Pictures: How much plastic are you eating?
Your comment about the political climate made me remember this. I cannot find the specific reference but in one of his lectures (on Youtube), Sapolsky talks about how some gay people felt offended in the 70's by research about the relation between brain structure and sexual orientation, since they felt it treated their sexual orientation as a pathology. Sapolsky contrasts it with the more recent enthusiasm about similar research, because people felt it would prove being gay was not a matter of choice or bad nurture. In political contexts, people blindly replace connotation for implication. Whereas implication is a concern of Logic (and hence, Science), connotation is a concern of intuition (or should I say, instinct) about constantly changing cultural ideals.
primroot··on We can have democracy or we can have Facebook
In that case, why not blame Hillary Clinton for normalizing relations with the genocidal state, so that American corporations could have access to a new market?
primroot··on We can have democracy or we can have Facebook
"The engineering of consent is the very essence of the democratic process, the freedom to persuade and suggest." - Bernays. This quote makes me think how it should not be a surprise that journalists working for big media companies are some of the main voices behind the calls for censorship.
primroot··on “I've had to relearn coding to get through the new interviews”
That sounds interesting. I would have a job by now if someone valued the fact that I like memorizing Ancient Greek poetry :) Instead I failed my last interview because I took longer than half an hour to implement JSON indented stringify in JS and did not use template literals and a switch statement. It was my first technical interview ever after 10 years of developing software. I did not expect how much being watched and trying to fulfill several unclear expectations would hinder my performance on a problem, which I would otherwise consider very easy.
primroot··on College students are learning hard lessons about anti-cheating software
This reminds of what Filtered.AI does. Except that it does it for some sort of automated job interview. When interviewing through them, I had to install a Chrome Plugin that recorded audio, video, and browsing activity at all moments. But I guess they're just trying to fix the software engineer interview process.
