prichino··on Why is rent skyrocketing?
Don't worry, the IRS is hiring 80,000 new agents to help the middle class count their taxes.
prichino··on Nocturnal bottleneck
Global warming is so 2010... It's climate change
prichino··on How to make fermented hot sauce (2021)
He did a peer-reviewed, double-blind study with 1000 test subjects over the course of 10 years.
prichino··on We don't know how to fix science (2021)
Oh, I absolutely think we see things the same way. It's not greedy, they just need to pay the bills and well... Truth might suffer in that environment
prichino··on We don't know how to fix science (2021)
You're absolutely right.

I'd argue that to make science what it used to be, one would even have to cut funding.

Scientists used to be aristocrats interested in truth. These days they're just interested in grants.

prichino··on Pioneering economist says our obsession with growth must end
The problem is when a civilization stops providing ways for its inhabitants to keep winning inside of it, the civilization collapses. In Western civilization, if there is no growth, how will you motivate people to keep working? The only thing left is to steal from the people who already have things.
prichino··on RIP Good Times (2008)
One of those ecological puritans. Saving the world for who knows whose children
prichino··on Book Review: Progress and Poverty
Not quite, owners DID the work and labeled it their own.
prichino··on Book Review: Progress and Poverty
And to add, and where do you get the materials to build the wind turbines and solar plants?
prichino··on Book Review: Progress and Poverty
I apologize for the uncalled snark. My point is that at the end of the day everything valuable at some point came from the land. The Intel factory is just wealth that was extracted and accumulated earlier, it is an actual, valuable asset.
prichino··on Book Review: Progress and Poverty
That's the gist of it. If land is so worthless even rich people don't want anything to do with it, why would it make someone poor better off to have it?
prichino··on Book Review: Progress and Poverty
The username checks out; where do you think wealth comes from if not land? Paper money in the end is just a representation of claims for assets generated from land. Food, minerals, energy, actual things all come from land.

You cannot eat a metaverse.

prichino··on The Crypto Elites Are Plotting a Wall Street Merger
Nice, can't wait for the day instagram and tiktok cannot afford to power their services.
prichino··on Ask HN: I just gave myself a panic attack. How do I stop this?
Magnesium in the short term, fix lifestyle long term
prichino··on Ask HN: If your SaaS was used to commit a financial crime, what should you do?
Why do you care? Don't assume and ask a lawyer. Ban the user for not following TOS and should be good
prichino··on Who is squatting IPv4 addresses?
The author of trilema.com at some point boasted of having bought a /16 and then renting it out.

Something I don't quite understand is why IPV6 is assumed to be better, if anything sticking to IPV4 will lead to more "selective" use. Actually useful things get an IP, the rest, well, better get more useful? Wishful thinking?

Thank you,

prichino··on Have we been thinking about inflation all wrong?
This deflation is bad meme comes straight from the big international bankers of the early 20th century (JPM et al.). They cared mostly about liquidity and stable exchange rates. Unless you are one of them, please stop parroting "would be extremely bad". Would it be different from now? Probably. Extremely bad? For whom?
prichino··on Physicists identify the engine powering black hole energy beams
Quanta magazine is not a journal and is meant for general public divulgation; it is written in a very accessible style, starting from the title.
prichino··on Consumer prices increase 2.6 percent
The inflation has been tampered with quite a bit over the years. It's how you explain how the avg American is much poorer than his parents. I.e. in real terms, as in being able to buy: quality food, quality car, quality house (what? renting? no, not the same)

I like this website as it uses the older methodology which has been twice updated it seems: http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/inflation-charts

prichino··on Consumer prices increase 2.6 percent
Oh lookie, someone has been calculating the numbers using the old methodology. We are much poorer than we thought.

prichino··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
Yeah and horses trampled over kids all the time. Justification enough is that the kids should've known better
prichino··on Making sense of what’s going on in the housing market
Bitcoin will happen. This injection of money can be seen as a cashout of the current system, selling as much USD as the market can take while it is still possible.
prichino··on Square: Bitcoin Is Key to an Abundant, Clean Energy Future
Why do people who have no money think they have a say in how energy is spent? Historically, in the whole of time, there has never been a period where that happened. What is making people think it is different with Bitcoin?
prichino··on The value of downvoting, or, how Hacker News gets it wrong (2009)
At least he has opinions. The "everyoness must code" folk sometimes do sound like markov-generated text. Funny that you hold his coding opinions in less respect for what is most decidedly a not coding-related opinion. Substitute coding for "advanced mathematics", "investment banking", "nursing".

Would you lose respect for a professional nurse's nursing opinions if he said learning to nurse is a really dumb thing to do unless you intend to make a career out of it?

prichino··on When did “privacy issues” start to mean “too much privacy”?
For future reference, Wikileaks 2016 has some examples
prichino··on Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin
> At some you need to get your money into the banking system as government backed currency for it to be useful

At some point this will not be true. See Weimar, Venezuela, etc...

prichino··on Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin
Even then this is a strawman, the main use for BTC is not transactions, it is the store of value in front of inflation. Suppose 90% of users saved in BTC and only cashed out once a year, and 10% are frequently using drug dealers (pun intended) that would be a low number of legitimate transactions but BTC itself would be legitimately helping a lot of people.
prichino··on Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin
I'm interested on what needs to happen to ensure its future availability/viability, do you have any pointers?
prichino··on Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin
I mean the smarter ones usually hide it...
prichino··on Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin
Not having your savings blown away by indiscriminate money printing, UBI or whatever inflationary scheme awaits us is a pretty good legitimate use.
