Love Crystal and love seeing it here more. Ruby has been day job for years, but Crystal is so much fun for side projects and random things to build. Easily approachable, especially for Ruby devs.
All those things sound nice, but ultimately, it's going to be a company that allows me to be in a good situation with my keeping work stress low, work volume reasonable, vacation high, compensation high.
All companies end up being terrible in some way, but the biggest factor will always be what life it allows me to create for myself.
Pretty embarrassing the number of people here who seem to have no issue with unsolicited nudes. Has anyone ever talked to anyone who's been harrassed, assaulted, stalked, anything? Yikes
Reading through that thread and then a bit more of his twitter, just seems like yet another wannabe Dan Price style philosopher, acting like the enlightened person residing at the center of every debate. None of his arguments are particularly concerning or unique considering how much every other company lobbies and evades governments.
A lot of US national parks have cell phone dead zones. Angel's Landing is wildly popular, and dangerous, and most of it and the trail to it don't have service, or very minimal/broken service.
There are PLENTY of areas people go under normal circumstances that don't have sufficient service if there's an emergency.
With Subaru, you can also buy additional years for cheaper when purchasing the vehicle. I think I could do 10 years (7 additional) for 375. Personal preference now/later but that 375 goes on the loan anyways.
Interesting, do you mind sharing what makes you've experienced it with? My new '22 Subaru is my first experience, and if anything, they are off way more than I would like.
Is it bad I just want to say come join me? I am approximately at 3x ticket count of anyone else in my company for this calendar year while having taken about 15 days PTO so far. We could race, it would be fun. And it's super chill here.
As a hi senior dev who has spent the last 6 months full time mentoring a fresh-out-of-bootcamp junior, while also having my own project drag on longer than expected... you are doing fine. Your team (and management) is clearly woefully unprepared, unequipped, and unwilling, to properly mentor a new engineer
He spends a good chunk talking about figuring out how to get prep work without negatively impacting his life, but it's interesting that there was no mention of how the actual new job would impact his life. Especially since he literally just picked the highest paying ones.
Please talk to an RD and not rely on what's in here. The best thing is to make healthy changes and not trade one problem for another one like many of the suggestions here.
I recently upgraded vehicles from a 2009 to a current one with all the new safety features. In my research I read lots of complaints about emergency/auto braking activating too much and other features of the car stepping in to assist the driver. Since switching vehicles, on the incredibly rare occasions something has activated, it's always been valid and a quicker reaction than my own.
Your tag line reminds me of all the times I've pondered how bad these complaining drivers must be.
Just want to say that I am the same as pretty much everything you said. Job is to make for a good life.
I will also say, most discussion usually paints the devs not working as much as less productive, whether explicitly or implicitly. But that isn't necessarily true either. I'm the top contributor for this calendar year at my company (public but not F500, about 100 developers) but averaging ~4 hours a day of actual work.
It's being downvoted because it's silly to equate the pandemic with wearing a mask indoors. There's so much more to it than that and if nothing in your life reminds you of that, you're incredibly lucky.
It is not even remotely close to being over in the US. After visiting SF for a week this month, I don't even know how someone in that bubble could think that, since it's clearly not over there either. It's much different and less problematic in SF than many other parts of the country, but absolutely not over there or anywhere else.
There's also the opposite scenario, willingly sharing location. This is pretty reasonable for a few reasons, but thinking of some for my female best friend:
- Going on a date
- While out running
- Going to a bar
Plenty of other things too but those come to mind first
It's interesting, all the discussion in the immediate aftermath was along your lines of thinking, and then later, everybody else came in to talk and took the side of the company without understanding what had actually occurred. They latch onto the word "politics" and decide it was the 1/3 who were toxic.
