prh8··on Ruby 4.0.0
You work in a large Ruby codebase that _isn't_ Rails?! Are you hiring??
prh8··on Inside CECOT – 60 Minutes [video]
and unsurprisingly, this is getting downvoted, despite being extremely accurate
prh8··on Ruby website redesigned
His posts, his statements, his treatment of other people, yes, he advocates for things which cause harm to others. The term is stochastic terrorism. He creates a welcoming space _to people who are accepting of his bigoted ideology_ which gives some nice publicity, but is not creating a kind and welcoming community.
prh8··on Ruby website redesigned
platforming him at all is nonsensical if you want to claim to have a kind and/or welcoming community
prh8··on Ruby website redesigned
the only thing his statement was missing was thank you for your attention to this matter

What is broken in your mind? What things did you have a "not that great" experience with? There are de facto standards and defaults in Ruby as well.
prh8··on Self-hosting my photos with Immich
This is great timing, I'm just setting up a homelab and planning to run Immich on a mini PC server connected to a NAS. I did find icloudpd, which seems like a pretty reliable syncing tool for people in Apple ecosystem. https://github.com/icloud-photos-downloader/icloud_photos_do...
prh8··on FAA to cut flights by 10% at 40 major airports due to government shutdown
Republicans want it open with the conditions, conditions that are unacceptable for the health of society
prh8··on Ruby core team takes ownership of RubyGems and Bundler
by thanking Ruby Central who is the aggressor but not thanking the maintainers for their decade plus of work?
prh8··on Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover
He is a consistent pot stirrer, whether it's his politics or his vendettas, and he never really stops talking about them
prh8··on Ruby Central's Attack on RubyGems [pdf]
Well they had a country until the US and UK stepped in...
prh8··on Ruby Central's Attack on RubyGems [pdf]
Well this is because he has gained more control over RC, which is wise than Rails Foundation starting their own thing
prh8··on Ruby Central's Attack on RubyGems [pdf]
The problem is that Shopify is leveraged by DHH (who is on their board) to be the financial support referenced elsewhere in today’s discourse. Shopify is a bad actor here
prh8··on Ruby Central's Attack on RubyGems [pdf]
This is only one of many examples over years of DHH’s ideology. Analyzing this one instance (the most recent) does not change anything, this is a drop in a bucket
prh8··on Ruby Central's Attack on RubyGems [pdf]
The only people who believe the world isn’t on fire are the ones with the matches
prh8··on macOS Tahoe
> And Vehicle Motion Cues help reduce motion sickness in moving vehicles.

I love that the copy was directly copy pasted from iOS copy. I don't think vehicle motion sickness is a big concern with macOS

prh8··on Working on databases from prison
unfortunately the average quality of thought process of hn when it comes to life and common sense is the opposite of its technical knowledge
prh8··on Crystal 1.16.0
We use it to generate sitemaps with >30 million entries. Ported a Rails task that took ~9 hours to Crystal, using a library with the same API as the Ruby gem we had used. Essentially a copy-paste-tweak that took a couple hours of effort. Crystal version now runs in prod in about 30 minutes.
prh8··on Ask for no, don't ask for yes (2022)
This is such a helpful way of viewing it. I have a principal at work that will comment on things to delay or slow down, and then never revisit after their comments are addressed.
prh8··on Why Ruby on Rails still matters
Almost all scenarios
prh8··on Why aren't we losing our minds over the plastic in our brains?
As with most things, the answer is capitalism
prh8··on Hacking Subaru: Tracking and controlling cars via the admin panel
that still requires an active subscription unfortunately
prh8··on Hitting OKRs vs. Doing Your Job
And even if/when you are paid well, you probably aren't given any meaningful ability to do the things necessary for those business problems. Corporate inertia is strong.
prh8··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2025)
I do not mean this sarcastically or facetiously, but genuinely: would you be ok with a high performing engineer that had another SWE job? I know a couple people potentially interested if so
prh8··on Ruby 3.4.0
Same thing for me—4 years ago, Rails 4.2. Now on 6.0, work for 6.1 is wrapped up. I did just finish going from Ruby 2.7 to 3.3. Any particular issues you’re having, or just working through the process?
prh8··on Ruby 3.4.0
Nope it doesn’t, they did take that into account during development.
prh8··on Engineers do not get to make startup mistakes when they build ledgers
I work at a company that wants to start fixing their accounting system...what stacks are you familiar with?
prh8··on PR process killing morale and productivity
"will approve after nitpicks" is the most asinine behavior
prh8··on PR process killing morale and productivity
I've worked with plenty of devs who embody the toxicity here, lots of stylistic nitpicks and don't see the big picture. All the noise generated distracts from catching the important stuff.
prh8··on Trump wins presidency for second time
When the right felt like they were losing the soul of their country, they weren't being told they would be exterminated. They were afraid they wouldn't get to hate other people the way they like to.
