pretty_dumm_guy··on Fixing a memory leak on exception – IPython
I have had issues of disconnection in google colab notebook when I used the set_trace() function from Ipython.debugger module.

For example, when I try to get shape of a matrix with dimensions 1200X784, a popup said there was a run time error and the notebook disconnected with the hosted runtime.

I am just wondering if this is related to my problem. I would really appreciate any thoughts on this. Thank you

pretty_dumm_guy··on Train Your Brain Like a Memory Champion
This. I wanted to make this comment. I was quite interested in improving my both long and short term memory and I came across "Moonwalking with Einstein" book. While the methods such as "menomics" and "memory palace" presented in this book were quite interesting, I learned over a period of time that it doesn't help much.

There is quite a lot of information out there and we need to compress it in someway, intelligently so that we could retrieve it in when the need arises. The important part of the retrieval process, I believe, is getting all the relevant information along with the required ones and I honestly don't see how menomics and memory palace could help.

pretty_dumm_guy··on How to drive in India (2015)
I was recently in India and I noticed something that troubled me. The traffic signals change on opposite ends very quickly without giving the other side some time to adapt.

For e.g, When there is a change from green to red at one end, there must be a time gap in order to make sure all the vehicles have cleared the passage before changing the signal from red to green at the other end. This doesn't seem to be the case. I saw at least three minor accidents happen because of this in a time span of four days while I was in India few weeks ago.

As trivial as it may sound, I think it would help regulate the traffic more if they implement a better traffic signal system which takes this into account.

pretty_dumm_guy··on Ask HN: What's the most useful skill you ever learned?
I believe this one should be of high priority on the list of things that one should learn.

Hi. I am currently taking David Silver's Reinforcement Learning and Deep Reinforcement Learning Course from Berkeley. I would be very much interested in joining you for reading research papers and possibly working on projects too.

Thank you for replying promptly. I am willing to help with such a change, if planned. Meanwhile I'll get started with running spinning-up on my laptop.

Hi! I really appreciate you sharing this with the community. The documents and code look really clear and concise. I do have one question. Is it possible to change the dependency on Mujoco engine to something else (to for e.g. Roboschool)?

I don't have access to a computer with GPU and I am currently using google colab to do my DL projects. I tried installing Mujoco on colab but unfortunately, the computer id generated seems invalid. Any help is highly appreciated.

Thank you!

pretty_dumm_guy··on Firefox 62.0 Released
Hi. Could you please add more on how the memory leak might happen in Firefox ? It appears really interesting to me.
pretty_dumm_guy··on Firefox 62.0 Released
Hey. First I would like to thank you for the awesome work. I really enjoy using your plugin. Being a avid vim user it just makes it more easier right now. I do like to point out few issues that I have noticed so far.

1. key n used to traverse through all the found elements doesn't work properly.

2. The add on doesn't work when I am using pdf preview.

I believe I am using the most updated version of the plugin (last checked yesterday as of this comment).

I hope you look into this. If I am missing something please let me know.

Again thank you for the awesome work. If you have some time I would love to pick your brain about a few things.

pretty_dumm_guy··on Ask HN: Any affordable deep learning cloud service for practicing/experimenting?
Recently there was a hacker news post about using gpus in mining rigs as gpu instances to perform deep learning.

https://vectordash.com/

It seemed like a really cool idea. And the instances were pretty cheap.

Note: I am not sure if they solved the "verification of solution" problem yet.

pretty_dumm_guy··on Ask HN: How to self-learn electronics?
Step 1: Start with simple circuits. And implement them on bread boards. Don't go for the printed circuit boards yet. There are many circuits out there for beginners. Choose one and implement it. Vary the elements in the circuit. For example if the circuit asks you to use 10k ohm resister use a 100 ohm resister and see what happens. In this case there might be drop in voltage(I believe, my memory is quite vague). To measure this you use multimeter. Learn how to do that. It is fundamental for any one wanting to play with electronics stuff. (P.S: If you are from India there is a magazine named "Electronics for you". If you have the money buy it. It is quite amazing. I haven't read it 6 years though so I don't know if the quality is still good)

Step 2: Start reading the datasheets of different Integrated Circuits that you might use in your circuit. Its not that hard. Once you understand what Vcc, ground etc., are it becomes really easy.

Step 3: Try and solder the the elements that you used on a board. Soldering is a basic skill that many engineers I know lack. It is good to know it. I have fixed many broken radios and other electronic items using this skill.

Step 4: Start designing printed circuit boards on a software and send it to a company and print it(there are other means to do this too).

Once you cover this, you can do a lot of really cool stuff with electronics. I hope this helps.

Note: This makes you an amateur. Now if you want to learn about FPGAs and other stuff, then its gets a little tricky. You might need a book for that.

pretty_dumm_guy··on WhatsApp co-founder tells everyone to delete Facebook
I quite remember the day when my name appeared on the comments section of a website I visited (through facebook widget I believe). I freaked out. But when I discussed about this with my friends back then almost every one seemed to have a cavalier attitude towards this(meaning they were completely fine with it). I wouldn't be surprised if my friends still have the same attitude.

People are okay with sharing their information online if it provides them convenience. Facebook provides them with the convenience of staying in touch with people. This combined with "I have nothing to hide anyway" & "so what if?" thought processes and monetary benefits on corporate side seems to have led to this huge data bank that is Facebook today.

I am really glad people are talking more about this. Never too late. People need to completely understand their actions online have consequences.d

pretty_dumm_guy··on The Collector’s Fallacy
This strikes a chord with me. I do the same with the hacker news posts. Every time, I open quite a few tabs with every intention of reading them. However, due to time constraints, I don't. Eventually I just "onetab"(firefox addon) them. This fear of missing out on information that might be valuable is troubling me a bit.

pretty_dumm_guy··on "Principles of Adult Behavior" by JP Barlow
This is a pretty good list of principles that one could use as a foundation for system of beliefs. However, I believe that one should learn about the situations in which these principles apply and don't. IMO, that is what adults are good at. That is what one should thrive to learn.

An example to consider: when thinking about rule 1, it doesn't make any sense to wait patiently in a line when others are cutting in. One has to stand up for himself/herself and say something.

pretty_dumm_guy··on A motorbike-racing robot
Hello guys,

I am finding it hard to understand how they managed to model the system(i.e bike). I am somewhat familiar with control theory(did some undergrad courses on them). But this system seems like a non-linear system and coming up with a mathematical model seems like a herculian task to me.(I once modeled a conical tank and it was not quite easy)

Could someday provide me any idea about what they have done here ? How they modeled this system ? What control algorithms they used here ?

Any pointers might be helpful as well.

P.S - Haven't read about developments in control theory in quite some time now. So forgive me if my comment is quite basic.

Thank you.
