pretext-1··on 5M item limit for Google Drive: File unable to generate or upload due to 403
Restic + rclone + GCP Service Account.

This is the way to go. Files will count towards the Service Account, not your account. If you use Google Workspace I strongly recommend using a Shared Drive (instead of sharing a folder in “My Drive”) so the files will be owned by your org, not by the Service Account (otherwise deleting the SA would result in the files being deleted as well, because in “My Drive” the creator of a file keeps ownership even when creating in a shared folder). If you have problems with the 400,000 files limit in a Shared Drive: create a new one, rclone has a “union” backend. It can be set to create new files in the new Shared Drive while still showing files from the other drive(s). Also Shared Drives have their own recent activity views so it doesn’t clutter your “my drive” view.

Create a SA in GCP and generate a JSON credentials file. Create a folder or Shared Drive via web and share it with the SA.

I’m using this setup for years with zero problems.

Example rclone config: https://pastebin.com/KdsFQz5K

pretext-1··on Google just launched Bard, its answer to ChatGPT
I think OP meant useless for search
pretext-1··on Deutschlandticket for regional bus and rail services to be offered for €49/month
* It’s inefficient. Eligibility must only be confirmed once while ticket control happens often. Ticket control needs to be fast. * Training all inspectors to verify student IDs is much more effort compared to training people at point of sale only. * Many places also accept tickets with student badge instead of student IDs for verification.

This is probably also the reason we don’t get discounted 49€-tickets yet. They’re sold digitally so they can’t check the student ID at point of sale.

A digital student ID could improve this but implementing this internationally is hard.

pretext-1··on ‘I will show you how safe Telegram is’
Yes it is. It’s worse for Telegram though because it gives the attacker access to the chat history too. Telegram does however send a message to all devices when a new device is logging in, so at least you would know. Signal does not do that but your contacts will get a message that your security code changed if they have the option for that enabled, but people generally ignore this message.

Both services offer to set an additional pin or password to protect your account.

pretext-1··on GitHub Sponsors will stop accepting PayPal on February 23, 2023
It’s the only widely supported payment scheme which allows consumers to properly manage automatic payments, i.e. authorization and revocation are not stuck in the 90’s.
pretext-1··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
"Better" is irrelevant to the law, the requirement is a USB standard that's USB-C or newer. Apple is in the USB-IF so they can innovate there together with other vendors.
pretext-1··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
The law allows newer standards to be used. USB-C is just the required minimum.

The goal of the law is to ensure standardization of connectors is happening, not to enforce USB-C forever.

If "no laws" would be the solution, Apple would have switched to USB-C already. Unfortunately they didn't, proving the law was necessary.

pretext-1··on Gender pay gap closing among German board members: men are slowly catching up
The article is about salary not voting power.
pretext-1··on Lufthansa has not banned AirTags
> They know airtags can be used for crime and don't care.

So can iPhones. Or Androids. Or ski masks, lock picks, tape. Should we stop selling useful items when they can be abused? Apple did way more to stop the abuse of AirTags than the competition and I don't see anyone complaining about Tile. Almost any tool can be abused or used to hurt someone. Stop trying to shift the blame from the perpetrator to the tool being used.

Also: funny how the US doesn't ban guns even though they were literally invented to kill people but now fight about AirTags.

pretext-1··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
Not for the "vast majority", but they are quite popular even for non-techy users, thanks to commercial VPN providers buying ads on YouTube and even offline. Narrative: if you don't use a VPN, hackers will steal all your data and your money. The apps from these providers are easy to set up. Even my mom asked me about it, it's surreal.
pretext-1··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
Yes, very nice addition for families. Unfortunately there can only be a single shared library, so it can't be used for sharing with other groups.
pretext-1··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
Not on their own but there will be legislation. EU just passed the Digital Services Act which requires the largest of the messengers (e.g. WhatsApp, iMessage) to offer APIs for other platforms to interconnect upon request. Google could use this to connect RCS and iMessage users. Not exactly what they wanted (iOS implementing RCS natively), but same effect.
pretext-1··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
iOS 15 only auto-updates within 15.x.
pretext-1··on After self-hosting my email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel
Certs for MX servers are supposed to have the MX as subject or SAN, not your email domain. It's important when the sender enforces encryption with a valid cert (e.g. MTA-STS, or config in the mail server, or many hosted solutions like Google Workspace also support enforcing this for selected or all domains).

Example:

example.com. MX aspmx.l.google.com.

Cert should have aspmx.l.google.com as subject or SAN.

pretext-1··on Apple is building an ad empire as its iPhone privacy crackdown weakens rivals
iOS natively supports content blockers and Safari extensions.
pretext-1··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
You should become an airplane pilot.
pretext-1··on Browser password managers – flawed security, by design
No, the prompt just unlocks the UI. Otherwise you'd be asked for your Windows password every time you auto-fill a password.
pretext-1··on Finland to Become the First EU Country to Test Digital Passports
Looks like OP fell into the "Great Reset" conspiracy theory rabbit hole. The article does not mention anything related to "social credit score" and replacing a hardware passport (which is already equipped with a chip) with a software version would not make a difference anyway.
pretext-1··on New documents reveal scale of US Government’s cell phone location data tracking
Unfortunately only works in Safari and Mail. I wish they would make it work system-wide (like a real VPN).
pretext-1··on New documents reveal scale of US Government’s cell phone location data tracking
Are the apps different if I download them from F-Droid? For example if I download Signal, is it different then the Play Store version?
pretext-1··on Microsoft Windows Network File System v4 Remote Code Execution
Didn't even know Windows could do that.
pretext-1··on Captive Portals
Can you provide some examples?
pretext-1··on Open Source Alternative To
Open core is a business model not a license. You can download GitLab CE and use it under MIT license. You can use all the features it contains and do whatever you want with the code. Yes, GitLab Inc. has other products and some of them are paid, but that doesn't change the fact that GitLab CE is open source.
pretext-1··on Proton is trying to become Google without your data
> Do you have evidence that Proton does not actually encrypt their emails?

Their encryption is based on PGP and therefore only message contents are "E2E" encrypted. Subject, From, To, etc. are not. These fields contain most of the information already. For example, Amazon puts the name of the ordered item in the subject line, so they can still see what you ordered.

And I'm putting "E2E" in quotes because if the sender does not send encrypted emails, then they can read the full content at delivery time, obviously. They immediately encrypt them with your public key and they claim that they discard the unencrypted version after that but there is no way we can verify that.

Long story short: you still have to trust your email provider after all. If I'd want to switch away from Google, I'd probably switch to some "normal" email provider (Fastmail, Apple, etc.). The benefits of "E2E" encryption for email are questionable and the drawbacks huge (for example search is very limited). But competition is good and I'm glad they are advancing.

pretext-1··on FairEmail stopping development after Google falsely flags app as spyware
Those are services not OS. And Microsoft services are no different. Difference is that Google is more successful (has more users and services and therefore more data).
pretext-1··on Google has been DDoSing Sourcehut for over a year
No I did not "choose to download packages from NPM". Choosing means there is an alternative. And besides that the registry part is invisible in your package file (hardcoded default like GOPROXY).

If you look at it, it's pretty similar. The part before the first slash is invisible:

npmjs.com/org/package

proxy.golang.org/org.com/package

The difference with Go is that you can actually change the first part if you want, or even disable it.

pretext-1··on Google has been DDoSing Sourcehut for over a year
They could do it similar to Go. Instead of "facebook/react" it could be "facebook.com/react" in "package.json".
pretext-1··on Apple Cash
In my country (in EU) everyone uses it. Friends, colleagues, family, everyone. That part is great. But the app sucks. I wish PayPal would fix their app. Animations are buggy, it's slow (not really slow but slow enough to show a loading spinner every time) and navigating through the app is hard.
pretext-1··on OnlyFans creator stalked and had sex with Meta employees to reinstate Instagram
They are busy people, have to set priorities ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
pretext-1··on FairEmail stopping development after Google falsely flags app as spyware
lol have you heard of ... Windows 10? No OS collects more usage data. And no you can't disable it. And if you try, it will re-enable tracking after some updates.
