prescriptivist··on Ruby adds a core class called Data to represent simple immutable value objects
If you want to use something like this right now (with a threadsafe bonus) concurrent-ruby has some useful specialized structs that offer similar behavior:

* ImmutableStruct: Immutable struct where values are set at construction and cannot be changed later.

* MutableStruct: Synchronized, mutable struct where values can be safely changed at any time.

* SettableStruct: Synchronized, write-once struct where values can be set at most once, either at construction or any time thereafter.

prescriptivist··on Emergency SOS via satellite
Yeah. I mean there are large swaths of New England where there isn't any cell service at all, let alone multi-carrier coverage. And these aren't just logging roads or whatever, they are paved roads that people commute and travel on every day. This is an unalloyed good for anyone anywhere in areas like this.
prescriptivist··on Emergency SOS via satellite
> The SOS button is very expensive. Extremely expensive.

With my inReach I pay for the insurance plan [1]. I do wilderness float/canoe/kayak trips and I have it for peace of mind in case I or somebody I'm with (or encounter) is immobilized, as I can walk out of most places I go to if my legs are working.

I haven't been able to find any such option for the iPhone, which, amongst other things, means I'll be keeping my inReach. Though to be clear I don't know to what degree I would be on the hook for anything if I _did_ hit the SOS button.

prescriptivist··on The U.S. Diesel Shortage Is Worsening
Yep. In New England [1] roughly 2,000,000 households heat via "heating oil" or kerosene (which is more expensive). There are slightly more folks that heat with natural gas, but this is a rural vs suburban divide and New England is quite rural overall.

Heat pumps are in vogue now but usually they are supplemented with fireplaces, wood stoves or pellet stoves.

prescriptivist··on The U.S. Diesel Shortage Is Worsening
It's more than transportation. "Heating oil" is basically diesel and is affected by these prices. Winter is about to hit the Northeast and many people still heat with it. To fill up my tank today would be around $1200 and I will be expecting to refill it every 40-60 days for the next six months.
prescriptivist··on VS Code Org Mode
The most annoying thing to me about VS Code is it cannot be extended in a way that doesn't require developing a plugin. In short there is no ~/.vscode.ts. Instead you have to create a plugin to add custom commands.

I say this a a former emacs user now using VS Code.

prescriptivist··on Everesting – Climb the Equivalent of Mt. Everest
My go to local hike starts at 450ft above sea level and goes to 1150ft sea level. However it has many ups and downs so the total ascent is ~1250ft. To the top of the mount/hill and back to the trailhead is roughly 4.5 miles. So to "Everest" on this hike using total ascent numbers I would need to do this hike 23 times, which would cover about 105 miles. Seems like I would need to take up extreme trail running to accomplish this in one go. Interesting idea but probably not for me.

Doesn't help that you have to write apps in their proprietary language.
prescriptivist··on Pstore: Ruby Built-In Hash Persistence
I recently had the need to build an internal system that distributed workloads across many workers via a client/server model. I did the proof-of-concept using druby [1] and it turned out to be so simple and stable that we just ran with it. It'd been years since I had used that library and instinctively I assumed we'd get the prototype out and then rebuild it using some sort of web service and utilize a high concurrency web server but druby just worked!

prescriptivist··on Sierra Club, environmental groups petition EPA to ban natural gas for heating
Many people love to travel to exotic far-away destinations in the US too. Many of these people look down their nose at people in the suburbs who drive large SUVs as being wasteful. People always want others to do the sacrificing.
prescriptivist··on Sierra Club, environmental groups petition EPA to ban natural gas for heating
> private jet flights

Why not all flights? It shouldn't be so cheap to fly for pleasure OR business given the climate externalities caused by _every_ flight.

Muir was a racist yes, but also he just really didn't like anyone. He was generally just a mercurial and unlikeable person. I read a biography of him, A Passion For Nature, a few years ago. I knew nothing about Muir going into the book and by the end I was ready for him to croak so I could finish the book and never think about him again.
prescriptivist··on One million queries per second with MySQL
No, it's pretty much an sqlite problem. As good as it is for limited concurrency situations (and synthetic benchmarks like this expensify blog), it does not compare to mysql or postgres for mediating hundreds or thousands of transactions per second.
prescriptivist··on One million queries per second with MySQL
No one is running their OLTP and batch processing workloads on sqlite (bedrock or not) at scale. There may be unique cases for specific situations but show me an org with large and broad concurrency demands running sqlite at scale and I'm happy to be proven wrong.
prescriptivist··on Apple and Globalstar Rumored to Announce Satellite Connectivity for iPhone 14
I spend a fair amount of time in northern New England and my mini takes a while to connect and sync up (10 minutes or more in some cases) and requires more or less stabilizing it somewhere where there is no tree cover. I wonder if these various satellite/phone connections coming online will require similar steps.

prescriptivist··on Ask HN: Google Search down?
10 hours ago we had a flood of network failures in us-central1 and saw no GCP status changes. We blindly attempted to mitigate in various ways (freezing HPAs because we thought that we were making excessive calls to external infra and getting throttled) and it resolved itself eventually. Maybe we were at fault the entire time but not seeing this issue exposed up on the GCP dashboard is infuriating.

prescriptivist··on Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected
They are down about 7% over two weeks in my New England city. A bit moreso in the rural areas. OP can call it a "plunge" but it's down from literally the highest I've seen it in recent history to just slightly less of the highest I've seen it in recent history.
prescriptivist··on Why we're sticking with Ruby on Rails
The systems in kubernetes for horizontal auto scaling are extremely nice and work very well for our large monolith. At this point I can't imagine deploying any system with significant batch or online workloads any other way.

We switched to k8s early on in the company and that little bit of work to get it operating with HPAs, etc has paid off in dividends over time.

prescriptivist··on 9,000-pound electric Hummer shows we can’t ignore efficiency of EVs
OP is talking about CO2 emissions. 20% of Maines electricity generation is fossil but the vast majority of that is natural gas, which they get from New Brunswick (as does NH).

A lot of negative sentiment about Mapbox in this thread. I have been prototyping a (native) app powered by Mapbox -- would it be a bad idea to hitch oneself to their ecosystem?

prescriptivist··on You vs. A Billionaire: compare your income
We don't know what Elon makes a year because money gets very weird at those levels. Loans are effectively free so you don't have to "make money". Accounting chicanery is pervasive. So you have to start somewhere, which is a statement that should apply to revising how we tax ultra-wealthy people as well.
