preisschild··on Show HN: AstroHelm – Use your phone camera to aim a telescope or telephoto lens
Ah interesting, I thoughy this was also using IMU

I often use Stardroid/SkyMap for this, which is free (open source) software

preisschild··on Hackers obtain counterfeit TLS certificates for Google and other large services
certificate pinning is generally not recommended and wouldn't work in browsers that use the browsers/operating system's root CA store anyways. CAAs can be edited by the one who controls the domain's DNS records.
preisschild··on Hackers obtain counterfeit TLS certificates for Google and other large services
Thats hardened infra, not vibe coded webapps. There are a lot fewer vulnerabilities in that.
preisschild··on Homa: The end of TCP for AI clusters [video]
Because those LLMs often operate on confidential data that should not be leaked?
preisschild··on NRC issues first U.S. construction permit for a BWRX-300 small modular reactor
Agreed. The less nuclear-grade concrete you need the better.
preisschild··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
Especially this

> USA-223 (NROL-32), which is seen as the fifth satellite in the series, is according to NRO director Bruce Carlson "the largest satellite in the world."[3] It is believed that this refers to the diameter of the main antenna, which might be well in excess of 100 m (330 ft).

This thing probably picks up Putin's nintendo wii controller...

preisschild··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
The current admin is waging a war on them (the deep state) and is trying to replace them with loyal MAGAts
preisschild··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
The Soviets also had passive and active naval radar satellites during the cold war (RORSAT), which could downlink directly to cruise missiles (SS-N-19 Shipwreck)
preisschild··on NRC issues first U.S. construction permit for a BWRX-300 small modular reactor
Yes, exactly. But even the sub 5 MWe microreactors that are often shown in those truck demos require lots of shielding that has to be done on-site beforehand.
preisschild··on NRC issues first U.S. construction permit for a BWRX-300 small modular reactor
You cant make every part in the factory anyways. You need lots of on-site civil engineering, which accounts for a large chunk of the total cost.

And many parts of large (+1GWe) reactors have also been manufactured at off-site factories and then shipped on-site by barges in the past.

> but it's not literal Tianmen-tier censorship

Not yet, but Trump has proven time and time again that he is not below acting like a communist dictator

preisschild··on NRC issues first U.S. construction permit for a BWRX-300 small modular reactor
The BWRX-300 footprint is so large they might as well just build large nuclear power units again and get 3-4x the power

No hes just talking about denying them human rights, much better.

I have tried, but I disagree with that assessment. It just tastes like peas for me.

preisschild··on F-Droid 2.0
Users and maintained packages would probably go down due to less users being able to use it, but users of Android (see GrapheneOS, LineageOS) without Google's Rookit can and will still continue to use it.
preisschild··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
There was not only massive amounts of ecological damage due to russian destruction of the Kakhovka Dam (which was a war crime), but also at least 59 people died. This would be impossible at Chornobyl because nobody lives around it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destruction_of_the_Kakhovka_Da...

I'm not saying destroying the chornobyl sarcophagus would be great, but it wouldn't cause the same amount of damage.

preisschild··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Just like with skyscrapers in Taiwan, we can and have built earthquake-resistant nuclear power plants before. Fukushima only failed due to the tsunami water shorting transmission lines and the emergency generators. It withstood the earthquake itself fine.
preisschild··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Then just build GenIII+ PWRs like most other countries.
preisschild··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Countries should definitely evaluate LMRs (Large Modular Reactors) too. Most countries need large amounts of carbon free energy, not small amounts. And nuclear power plant economics have profited in the past from making larger, more powerful reactor units.

But yeah their most modern nuclear power plant was a BWR 4 with Mark II containment, which would probably not be worth modernizing instead of building a new GenIII+ PWR from scratch that lasts a century.

preisschild··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
OP (ViewTrick) is very well known in the online nuclear energy community. He is the moderator of the NuclearEnergy subreddit where he regularly bans people for saying positive things about nuclear energy.
preisschild··on The GitHub wiki is an anti-pattern
In Gitlab the wiki is just a separate git repo. Is this not the case with GitHub?
preisschild··on SAML: A fractal of bad design
They are being used. Workload Identity Federation is often used to assign oidc identities to workloads and the Client ID Metadata Document (basically dynamic client registration) is used in protocols such as MCP and atproto
preisschild··on There's a high chance of devices being sold with GrapheneOS preinstalled in 2027
Depends how they implement their check, but if they do it correctly it would show the bootloader as locked and detect no su binary (no root).

If they use Google SafetyNet to basically block everything non-Google-certified™ then no.

preisschild··on There's a high chance of devices being sold with GrapheneOS preinstalled in 2027
You can verify the installation integrity via android attestation, which grapheneos uses
preisschild··on Self-Hosting Behind Cgnat
That sucks. I'm also in the EU and all CGNAT-using ISPs offer dualstack here
preisschild··on Self-Hosting Behind Cgnat
Can you not just use IPv6? Or do you have CGNAT with IPv4 only?
preisschild··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
The refueling part alone is still unproven and might take multiple years of trying in orbit before it actually works
preisschild··on MCP was always a bad idea?
Also dynamic oidc registration (client.dev) has became better supported on oidc idps to support MCP
