preisschild··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
Which one provides weapons to Russia, a nation in an active war against Europe?

And AFAIK the US has not even claimed Greenland.

preisschild··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
I'm from Europa and consider China a far bigger threat. Trump is probably going to get replaced by a Democrat in a few years. China has been ruled by dictators for decades and probably will be for decades and they are a lot more hostile to democratic nations.
preisschild··on .name Termination
It definitely makes sense for stuff like (non-US) gov domains. Have a federal agency control the `gov.<ccTLD>` domain and hand out subdomains to other agencies. See https://dachmarke.gov.de/ for example.

But I agree it makes no sense for public sales to the wider world such as `co.uk`. At least have the registrar be the govt company register and hand out subdomains to each registered company.

preisschild··on Japan halves speed limit to 30km/h on all narrow city streets
> moving furniture

Either rent a van or pay a moving company. Its not like you do this every week and it will still be cheaper if you do this every few years than paying for your own car.

> or even larger amounts of groceries that are infinitely harder without a car.

In high density cities this just doesnt exist. Grocery shops are at worst a few blocks away, you can just go more often or just use your own shopping cart (or equivalent)

> And then there is also the question of the environment on that public transport. IME "good enough that complaints remain manageable" seems to be the target here unlike a car where you can have private entertainment and air conditioning (not to mention sufficient ventilation) to whatever level you wish.

I get air conditioning in my cities bus/light rail/subways and its on a acceptable average level

And imo "entertainment" is a lot better in public transit where i can not only listen to music but also watch videos/read books/play games. When you are driving you shouldnt even be listening to an audio book since you could become distracted while operating your heavy machinery that can easily kill.

> And even for relatively frequent public transit routes you end up wasting quite a bit of time waiting.

Here subways/light rails comes every three to 10 minutes, this is not a problem.

preisschild··on How to get a free .arpa domain
You might not even need to go through HE. Many ISPs allow you to set your own PTR records / rDNS delegations if you ask them, since this is also necessary to host email servers.
preisschild··on Japan halves speed limit to 30km/h on all narrow city streets
In cities cars have no reason to exist. You can combine better scalable public transit (light rail, subways, trains) with bikes/scooters and you get best of both worlds. Have been living in one for years without a need for a car.
preisschild··on GrapheneOS says Pixel 11 has MTE support after all
GrapheneOS is a non-profit, publicly naming the actual issues is the only thing they can do to make Google fix those issues. And it is clear that security/privacy is their first priority, not "brand image"
preisschild··on GrapheneOS says Pixel 11 has MTE support after all
Tbf with all the information that has come to light since then Rossmann and FUTO were also not behaving correctly and it was fair from him to deny coming onto their show (where they have also invited fascists before)
preisschild··on Forgotten History of Small Nuclear Reactors (2015)
> "Yes, smaller reactors lose economies of scale, but we'll make it up through factory production, standardization and repetition"

Why not both? Large Modular Reactors (LMR). You can produce standardized modules in a factory and ship them via barges to their final destination.

See for example: https://whatisnuclear.com/offshore-nuclear-plants.html

preisschild··on EFF to Courts: Don't Rewrite Copyright over AI Hype
And what if that actually leads to less open-ness? If I license code under a copyleft license, users are forced to give back their changes to the public. Without copyright they would not be forced to do this, which means less work will be published.
preisschild··on EFF to Courts: Don't Rewrite Copyright over AI Hype
This would also mean copyleft would not work anymore. Companies would not be forced to release the source code of their modifications of (A)GPL software.

I think that would be a great loss

preisschild··on Relm4 makes developing beautiful cross-platform applications idiomatic
GTK has "native" backends for linux (wayland/x11), but also win32 (windows), quartz (macos), and web. Plus there is an experimental backend for Android

True but you can skip the net stack completely if you just want to transfer data

preisschild··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
> If anything, NAT has saved millions of wildly insecure devices running unpatched old Windows versions from getting pwned the second they connect to the open internet.

Its definitely the opposite. People started ignoring security because its "natted" anyways, even though NAT was never supposed to be security-critical. Thats what firewalls are for.

preisschild··on West Point Professor Fired for Refusing to Lie About Climate Change

Yeah but they won't give actual data on how this specifically affects geopolitics

preisschild··on Sovereign Tech Agency invests €500k in Flatpak
> No warnings or communication of the exception were given. All trust I had in Flatpak was eroded from that moment on

This is just wrong. Clients like the flathub website or gnome software show the risk posed by wide ranging access to local files, but Flatpak has to support legacy applications that don't use portals yet and thus they can't block applications having those permissions

https://flathub.org/en-GB/apps/com.calibre_ebook.calibre

> calibre is potentially unsafe

> Full file system read/write access

> Can read and write all data on the file system

Depends where that funding goes towards, a lot of far right grifters in the linux sphere hate many projects in the linux desktop ecosystem (freedesktop, xorg, systemd, gnome, kde)

See for example Lundukes "Woke Software" list

preisschild··on Xorg-server 26.1.0 rc1
Are you seriously acting like every application having full access over other applications is not an actual security issue?
preisschild··on Xorg-server 26.1.0 rc1
I doubt they care too much. They probably just have customers with applications stuck on a legacy window system. And they pay for that maintenance.
preisschild··on Linux 7.2

preisschild··on Linux 7.2
Yeah but this is for amdgpu and they had DP2.1 support for a while now.
preisschild··on Google has stopped pushing Git tags for some Android source code
Only Pixels, most other device are ironically locked down a lot more (not allowing custom keys for verified boot) or lack modern security features (like hardware security modules).

So you'll have to wait for the mentioned Motorola Flagship

preisschild··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
Unless you really have a large ethical problem with paying for any google product, I'd just recommend to get one of the previous-gen pixel devices. They are a lot cheaper than the Motorola smartphone coming out.
preisschild··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
I doubt that very much. They will always be a lot more expansive than even large (~6.8") single screen devices. I don't see how folds will ever be easier/cheaper to produce than single screen displays.
