preetamjinka··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026)
FunnelStory | MTS, Applied ML | Remote (India) | Full-Time | https://funnelstory.ai

FunnelStory is building agents to autonomously protect and grow revenue for post-sales teams. Our agents need evidence-backed signals from large-scale structured and unstructured enterprise datasets.

You'd work on cohort analysis, prediction models, experiments, and whatever else it takes to make those signals hold up. Our tech stack is primarily Go. Math/statistics background and 2+ years of experience working with ML in production is required.

Please email preetam @ funnelstory.ai with "HN - Applied ML" in the subject if you are interested.

preetamjinka··on Run OpenBSD on DigitalOcean for $4/month
Yeah. Back in ~2011, when I was in high school, I used to sell these kinds of VMs as a host and advertised on LowEndBox. Literally as a minor. I don't really trust any small time host with my data.

Meanwhile I recently migrated a $5 DigitalOcean VM that's been running flawlessly for over 6 years. It was in dire need of an Ubuntu upgrade. I expect this one to keep going for just as long!

preetamjinka··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2026)
FunnelStory | Principal Engineer | Remote (India) | Full-Time | 40-70 LPA | https://funnelstory.ai

FunnelStory builds context layers and AI agents over distributed enterprise data. We are a small (<20 people), fast-moving, VC-backed startup operating with exceptionally high leverage, and we are gaining strong traction with large enterprise customers. We offer meaningful equity, a chance to tackle hard problems at the intersection of AI, data systems, and ML, and the opportunity to shape the technical direction of a rapidly growing platform. We are committed to robust engineering practices to build resilient, high-performance systems.

This is a great fit if you have:

* Deep expertise in Go.

* A proven track record of solving hard, ambiguous problems across backend and data infrastructure.

* Strong fundamentals in relational databases (PostgreSQL), SQL, and complex data modeling.

* Excitement about taking a high-impact ownership role in an early-stage team.

Who we're looking for:

* 7+ years of experience in systems/backend engineering, data infrastructure, and cloud environments.

* Strong architectural background with a focus on engineering fundamentals over framework hype.

* Ability to communicate complex technical ideas simply and directly.

Apply via https://wellfound.com/l/2Cj73a or email me directly at preetam [at] funnelstory.ai with "HN - Principal Engineer" in the subject line.

Please include your GitHub/LinkedIn, resume, a link to a blog post or piece of writing you're proud of.

FunnelStory | Principal Engineer, AI Systems | Remote (India) | Full-Time | funnelstory.ai

FunnelStory builds a queryable context graph over enterprise data — the infrastructure layer that lets AI agents reason over live customer intelligence. We've built a federated query engine purpose-built for agents, ML models from scratch in Go (health scoring, cohort expansion, process mining, Markov chains, Genetic Pareto optimization), and on-prem deployment infrastructure for enterprise customers. All on a deterministically tested backend.

We need engineers who go deep. The kind who read academic papers to build something novel, then hunt down a performance bottleneck five layers deep in the stack. Go is preferred but not required. Strong math and systems engineering background is a plus. What's required: ability to solve hard problems, use AI tooling to add real value (not slop), and drive work forward independently.

Please reach out to me directly at preetam @ funnelstory.ai with "HN" in the subject.

preetamjinka··on Scaling Go Testing with Contract and Scenario Mocks
We do that too. We have hundreds of such tests. That establishes contracts.

We also have mocks. It’s not one way or the other. This post is talking about the mocking side of things.

preetamjinka··on Scaling Go Testing with Contract and Scenario Mocks
Yes, agreed. What the parent is saying about

> only ever use an interface, never the real implementation + mockgen the mocks based on this interface + use the mocks to assert that a function is called, with exactly this parameters and in this exact order.

is not ideal, and that's what we don't do. We test the real implementation, then that becomes the contract. We assume the contract when we write the mocks.

preetamjinka··on GPT-5.2
It's actually more expensive than GPT-5.1. I've gotten used to prices going down with each latest model, but this time it's gone up.

preetamjinka··on Foundation DB Record Layer SQL API
While this isn't specifically for FoundationDB, I wrote this post many years ago about how to implement (secondary) indexes on top of a key-value store. [0]

preetamjinka··on SQLite transactions and virtual tables
We use mattn's go-sqlite3 in our SaaS product. It's not ideal from a toolchain perspective (i.e. cross compiling becomes a little annoying, especially with multi-arch Docker images) but once you get across that hurdle, we haven't run into any major problems with cgo.

preetamjinka··on Ask HN: What happens when I click "request for quote" on your SaaS?
Depends on who clicks the button. It could be a junior person doing some research for their team, in which case they are not the decision maker nor the one with the budget/writing the check.

If a VP clicks on the button, that's a different story.

preetamjinka··on CTEs as lookup tables
Yeah. In many cases I've had to use CTEs like this in BI tools. When you're experimenting with datasets for dashboards it's much faster to work with CTEs than to try to make production DB changes.

I'm aware. If they discontinue it then I'll just stick to Kindle books. That's all I'm expecting from this device anyway. For everything else I have an iPad Pro.
preetamjinka··on It's easier and faster to pirate an e-book, than it is to buy it
This is what I do with my base model Kindle. I have its email address saved as a contact so it is super easy to send it ePubs (or PDFs!) from my phone.
