I'm crazy and no one wants to be my cofounder. My life consists of researching and experimenting with information markets in a rented hermit cave. Living on ramen has destroyed most of my internal organs, but I persist with the dream that one day I will build something that no one uses but my mom. You can find me on Twitch streaming to no one or on Twitter with 0 followers.

predictmktegirl··on Ask HN: Starting over after business failure
After I exited my last business, it took me 3 years to finally get up to feeling ready again. I also went to a dark place for a while. My best advice is to keep your head up and think more about the present than the future, at least for a little while. Keep yourself busy and avoid things that feel too cumbersome or dreadful. Exercise and treat your body well.

In between battling depression and anxiety over the years, I started doodling things again. Those doodles turned into thought experiments, into reading research papers, into connecting into a new field. I'm feeling more energized these days about starting something new, and more excited about working on a startup again.

I wish there was some way I could have avoided falling into the emotional abyss and spending so many years there. Maybe I should have focused on building more friendships over the years instead of being a loner. You really start to take for granted such things until the isolation of failure sinks in. Hopefully this time I will find a co-founder willing to go to felt with me. I'm not sure I can endure another solo fail.

I'm not sure Jack is the CEO investors need, but I think he is the CEO that society deserves.

I'm not sure globalization is very effective for economic growth when we're unable to enforce consistent rule-sets. If that growth is just regulatory arbitrage, we're only exchanging capital for fragile optimizations instead of production efficiency. Things seemed to be working pretty well when countries made good-faith efforts to not undermine the rules for local maximization. New actors have since entered the system who don't seem to mind playing the game exploitatatively even if it destabilizes the long-term equilibrium. Ironically, these players are often described as having "multi-generational thinking" but I won't name names.

To normalize the playing field, investments are needed to fund port-of-entry enforcement, quality control, and authenticity, among other things. Tariffs are the most sensible tax to fund these kinds of expenditures, which brings us back to square one. In fact, I think tariffs are probably a good quantitative measure of how egregiously another country violates it's trading partner's standards at the margins.

predictmktegirl··on Google Kubernetes Engine is introducing a cluster management fee on June 6
I was an early adopter of Google App Engine when it was first released and the consistency guarantees of the datastore burned me pretty badly. What I experienced in the test environment was not even remotely close to what I got in production.

Just last week, I was so tempted to give Google another shot over AWS. By all accounts, they have come so far, and more importantly, started using more of my preferred toolset as well. This is exactly the kind of thing that really scares me off.

I have a huge amount of respect for the world class systems scientists and engineers at Google. Unfortunately, they seem to counter it with a customer experience full of uncomfortable, often expensive surprises.

So now when you get stuck on a hard problem, someone can actually prove that it's because you suck? Thanks science!

You're not wrong but the unit economics are quite different.

With how much money everyone is spending, wouldn't it just be cheaper to build a private cross-country interstate where only AI drivers are allowed. Let humans drive the trucks to this interstate then let the AI take over. It seems like almost all the edge cases would be solved if you just got rid of other human drivers and let the vehicles network with one another.
predictmktegirl··on Highest French court reclassifies Uber drivers as employees
I don't understand why this is so complicated. If someone works for you, they are an employee. If someone works with you, they are a contractor. I think the French definition of subordination is a great defining characteristic. However, my understanding is that US law doesn't make this distinction thus introducing a gray area.
predictmktegirl··on Robinhood reports outage as markets rebound
Some of us had puts from last month which were well in profit. I personally have lost over $5k from this outage even though I'm technically not negative on my position. Painting all RH users as gamblers is pretty arrogant.
