prayerslayer··on What cracking open a Sonos One tells us about the Sonos IPO
Somewhat related question: I quite enjoy such articles where people take apart consumer electronics, although I don't know the jargon ("an extruded plastic tube with a secondary rotational drilling operation" - wat?). Does someone know accessible resources (as in "no dry textbooks") for mechanical engineering?
prayerslayer··on Show HN: Tones.fm – Make synth music
Nice idea to provide only notes from a chord! It's really motivating if you never made music before. ("Wow I can do this!")
prayerslayer··on Show HN: How to Make an AWS S3 Static Website with SSL
I run the same setup. Probably don't get any traffic because I don't write blog posts anymore. My monthly costs are around $ 0.70.
prayerslayer··on Two Photographers Unknowingly Shot the Same Millisecond in Time
> all the photos I will take will have been probably already shot by someone else

> Obviously not that realistic

Depends on how literally you want to take it. Lighthouses have definitely been photographed before. Photos depicting the man vs wild nature archetype too.

prayerslayer··on Convert ASCII scribbles to SVG
If you wonder where ASCII scribbles come from, I use http://asciiflow.com/ all the time for READMEs.
prayerslayer··on Spec-ulation – Rich Hickey [video]
I get your overall point that it's better than nothing, but you'll have to admit semver makes promises that just don't hold up in reality:

> because you know that PATCH and MINOR don't require your attention

:)

In 99 % of cases, they don't. But you're never completely sure.

prayerslayer··on Show HN: js.spec, a JavaScript implementation of clojure.spec
> Have you used js.spec or clojure.spec in production?

Not yet, but I have some use cases (mostly validation).

prayerslayer··on Show HN: js.spec, a JavaScript implementation of clojure.spec
Cool, thanks for sharing. I didn't know that one.
prayerslayer··on A Seattle vigilante who beats the police to bike thieves
MUMEN RIDER!
prayerslayer··on JS MythBusters – An optimization handbook from a high level point of view
This handbook assumes that JS execution really is your bottleneck and not network, DOM, what not. I doubt this is the case in the majority of applications, so following these tips might be even counterproductive as they sometimes come at the cost of readability.
prayerslayer··on Pokemon Go API
I am just happy to see that the API has "trading" as a concept, looking forward to that feature.

Overall it's sad that most game mechanics of the original games didn't make it into Pokemon Go. Does anyone know how much time they had to implement it?

prayerslayer··on Wire open-sourced
Not sure if these are for realsies, but there are some API keys in the webapp repository:

prayerslayer··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2015)
Zalando | Europe | https://tech.zalando.com/jobs

We're one of the leading European fashion retailers (https://zalando.de) operating in 16 countries. Currently we have around 800 people in the tech department, but we need more. You will work in a reasonably small team ("two pizzas") and influence decisions accordingly. Teams prioritize their work themselves. We will help you with relocation. We have offices in Berlin, Dortmund (Germany), Dublin, Helsinki. Also you get 40 % discount.

prayerslayer··on GitHub Desktop is now available
So much this.

Github for Mac is quite good already for commiting and pull-requesting. I could stop using my browser (for Github, at least) if they put issue management (open, close, view, comments) in there too. Would be awesome and a more unified experience.

prayerslayer··on PurifyCSS – Remove unused CSS
An alternative to this is symdiff http://symdiff.github.io/ (Disclaimer: I'm the author).

The auto-remove part you would have to code yourself though.

prayerslayer··on The photographers who refuse to abandon traditional film cameras
The major reason for me to occasionally shoot film is that I find the haptic and usability of the cameras way better than current digital models. Depends on how much you're comfortable to spend though.
prayerslayer··on RQ – A small JavaScript library for managing asychronicity
+1 for tests.
prayerslayer··on GitHub unveils its Licenses API
I collected the most popular repositories and their license. This post includes a CSV dataset which you can process yourself: https://npiccolotto.com/2015/03/licenses-of-popular-open-sou...
prayerslayer··on Wallaby.js – An intelligent test runner that continuously runs your tests
Then the obvious question is: Why not have both? :)

prayerslayer··on Wallaby.js – An intelligent test runner that continuously runs your tests
If this wasn't a commercial product I'd ask why it's a separate thing instead of a PR to karma.
prayerslayer··on Show HN: Tablight – Spotlight search for Chrome tabs
Awesome, thank you!
prayerslayer··on DefineJS – A lightweight implementation of AMD module format
Maybe the author could comment on what's wrong with require.js (the most popular AMD module loader) and which problems DefineJS solves?
prayerslayer··on A replacement for JavaScript's “alert”
Then there's also smoke.js

http://smoke-js.com/

prayerslayer··on Pace – Automatic page load progress bars in pure CSS
+1 a 100 times.
prayerslayer··on Ask HN: Review my startup – itripd.com
> I thought network effects were good. No?

They are. But you shouldn't rely on them in the beginning because they won't be there.

prayerslayer··on DiscoverTracks – Musicians you love listen to what you like
Nice work, I did pretty much the same thing about one and a half years back [1]. Didn't know it's still running [2], haha. I built it because I liked Favematic [3], but thought it didn't have enough "radio" like functionality.

I like your visual design better though, it's way cleaner. Also the track is better presented, but then again there were no pictures for tracks when I started.

Edit: Oh and btw I also had no clue how to describe what it does succinctly ;)

prayerslayer··on Basil.js – Smart persistence layer
What about lawnchair?

prayerslayer··on JQuery Accordion: The missing responsive, CSS powered accordion plugin
Maybe I misunderstand the issue, but... Well, everything is responsive at 100% width, right?
prayerslayer··on Show HN: Hacker News Redesign
What bothers me personally the most is aligning the comments link right. This works well on almost square browser windows, as in the mockup, but considering that hackers may (probably?) have huge screens at work... That's too far away from the other links. Fitt's law etc.
prayerslayer··on Redesigning The World Cup 2014 Brazil
Some thoughts:

* Showing colors of jerseys is not necessarily new, ARD and ZDF in Germany are doing this for a long time now.

* I like the round clock BUT! Why are the seconds below minutes? It's confusing. Why does the red bar representing stoppage time grow while the stoppage time itself shrinks (it's a countdown)? Does not work well together imo. What do you display when the game lasts longer than stoppage time? -00:56? And why take the screen estate of seconds for stoppage time? They aren't gone or anything. And I get the intention of "cutting" the clock in half for representing half times, but since the shape is primarily a clock I was wondering why the 30 minute mark is important. I'd cut the clock in quarters and use three of them to display the game's progress (45 min - one half).

* How does this work on low-res TVs? They are still out there and need to be considered.

* Did they explain their icons? What's e.g. the soccer field icon supposed to tell me?

As a whole it doesn't seem to be thought through, sadly.
