praveenster··on Monoprice now has $400 3D printers
I think 3D printing is similar to copier/printer technology about 15 years ago. Back then, you could have your own deskjet printer at home by that was only for low quality stuff. If you wanted professional prints, you would go to a Kinkos etc. Now you can get great quality prints at home with a cheap lazerjet. Similarly, I think in the next 10 years 3D printing will evolve to a point where everyone will have one in their home.

praveenster··on The Microsoft Surface Book Review
tl;dr "The hardware and build quality is very good. Performance is fantastic. Software on the Surface Book is a let down. The first firmware update fixed a lot, but there are still too many outstanding issues to recommend the Surface Book at this time."

praveenster··on Autopsy: Lessons from Failed Startups
It might be valuable to add the ability to have discussions for each of the entries on autopsy.io, allowing people to analyze it further and include the founders in the discussion. From this it might be possible to combine the analysis of a couple of the autopsies and launch a new idea.
praveenster··on Full text search in milliseconds with PostgreSQL
"The accuracy of PostgreSQL searches is not the best. In the examples that follow I’ve explained how to weight titles over text, but we found a few cases where typing the exact title of a document wouldn’t return that document as the first result."

Isn't this a concern as the main objective of search is to provide accurate results?

praveenster··on Ask HN: XMPP/Jabber self hosting
I have also been researching this topic for a while. I was using Google hangouts for a while but lately it seems to be dropping messages. Tried Skype next but it will only keep message history on the cloud for 30 days. Next evaluated Facebook. It works quite well but I want to host my own on a VPS. The top three alternatives seem to be prosody, ejabberd and openfire. I was planning to use ejabberd but the issue I have with any of the XMPP solutions is that they have issues with iOS and you need to find a way to get it to work with the push mechanism otherwise the IM clients will go offline in 10 minutes. Any suggestions for this?

Since Whatsapp doesn't have client facing web page, but only api's used by the client apps, are their scalability requirements different from those that have a web interface as well?
