praulv··on The aging mind: neuroplasticity in response to cognitive training (2013)
In general, this happens to me while trying to fall asleep. Very random, distinct, sharp and lucid childhood memories of certain points in time, though I do have be drifting into sleep. I've certainly never had it when trying to actively memorize new material.
praulv··on Rich Formula: Quant Trading (2015)
Typically it means you can invest in niche markets. These market would be out of reach for larger players as they would struggle to find liquidity for their portfolio size. On the other end, smaller players would not be able to adjust their positions sufficiently granularly due to minimum lot/clip sizes specified on the market - similar to a quantisation effect if you don't sample at a sufficiently high frequency.
praulv··on NEON is the new black: fast JPEG optimization on ARM servers
godbolt?

edit: curious as to how you perform this optimisation.

praulv··on Man guilty of hate crime for filming pug's 'Nazi salutes'
Hate speech and incitement to violence is not welcome in the UK, and quite rightly so.
praulv··on Rising Anxiety Among American Whites
I do not tolerate nor deem the claims worthy of a response. There must be a minimum acceptable level of intellectual debate which warrants engagement. The poster is incapable of providing any form of evidence and hence such laziness must be punished to enforce quality of debate in the wider interests of human progress.
praulv··on Rising Anxiety Among American Whites
At what point does identifying and labelling an ideologically driven argument devoid of any rational substance class as "name calling". Clearly the poster is parroting views consistent with identity politics and I was merely pointing out the blaring lack of propositional logic.
praulv··on 21 Years of Income as a Software Engineer in San Francisco
How does this square against the housing situation? From what I've heard Vancouver housing is comparable to London.
praulv··on What to do when tech jobs go bad
Name and shame buddy, we need to know who the toxic abusive employers are. There is no such thing as professional decency in this situation. Exploitative capitalist behaviour needs to be dealt with in unconventional ways.
praulv··on The WeWork Manifesto: First, Office Space. Next, the World
Great, feel free to go out and socialize. No need to try encourage alcohol - one of the most destructive social drugs in our society - in the workplace. There's plenty of people with drinking problems, recovering and former alcoholics who don't want the awkwardness of it all just because some 22 year old frat boy hasn't grown out of his college beer pong man child phase.
praulv··on The WeWork Manifesto: First, Office Space. Next, the World
I've worked in one of these trendy tech companies with a bar. They attract exactly the same kind of employee. Generally a complete bellend twat probably privately schooled and educated on his parent's money with grand delusions about his place in society. If you want to get smashed, there's plenty of pubs near by. No need to enforce your social code on me. I'm here to code.
praulv··on Like Peter Thiel, Tech Workers Feel Alienated by Silicon Valley ‘Echo Chamber’
Shall we start with the harassment and domestic violence problem? Or do you want me to pull out the statistics on "native" European populations. At least they don't go shoot up schools....
praulv··on The WeWork Manifesto: First, Office Space. Next, the World
" But WeWork takes extra steps to encourage fraternization. Like beer kegs that never run dry.

More than most companies, WeWork promotes the consumption of alcohol as an inherent virtue. Posters on the wall encourage people to have a drink. There are wine tastings at WeLive. Company parties feature top-shelf liquor. Mr. Neumann has a well-known penchant for tequila, and a well-stocked bar is prominent in his office.

On a recent Tuesday at 4:07 p.m., the community manager of a WeWork in Midtown Manhattan sent an email reading: “It’s time to get your creative juices flowing! Join us on the 5th floor to drink some wine & paint a beautiful picture.” Just after noon on Valentine’s Day, there was an invitation to share wine and cake in the common area.

Though alcohol is a social lubricant for some, it can be off-putting to many others. Many women have shared stories of feeling uncomfortable with what they described as a frat house culture at some WeWorks, prompting some to leave."

So office space AirBnB for a bunch of frat boys. No thanks.

praulv··on China Will Overtake the US in AI, said Alphabet's Eric Schmidt
No doubt given a giant step ahead by open source initiatives such as TensorFlow, ironically.
praulv··on Ask HN: Why is it so hard to hire good engineers?
The problem is you're trying to hire engineers to do business analysis, product management, support and quality assurance. The problem is your lack of engineering culture and process.
praulv··on Facebook Has Got an Instagram Problem
I always think of it like this: if Google fell apart, the world as we know would change if. If twitter/facebook fell apart, my day to day life would not change in any way.
praulv··on A Muslim President? The Abolition of Religious Tests
According to the average Trump supporter, you've already had a Kenyan born muslim in office for many years.
praulv··on Relativ – A VR headset that you can build yourself for $100
This should carry a trigger warning for imposter syndrome.
praulv··on Is Your English Accent British or American?
We have something very similar in the UK tax service (HMRC) which is "password".
praulv··on LinkedIn is ignoring user settings
Doesn't matter. I recently got suckered into their free premium trial as well which then resulted in monthly charges. I complained quite vocally about their tactics and got it refunded straight away. It is worth a shot. At the very least be willing to pay a minimum of a month's fees.
praulv··on Is Your English Accent British or American?
*password I believe. Upvoted.
praulv··on Poverty-Fighting Startups
And you think American capitalism provides "gratification" in being a corporate drone in middle management ticking checkboxes for your next paycheck? I'd gain much more happiness in seeing equality of all people around me, knowing my hard work benefits all, than feeding dividend-sucking corporate greed.
praulv··on Python decorators they don't tell you about
It's all very well writing fancy decorators, but unittesting them, specifically, mocking decorators is trickier.
praulv··on Jacob Appelbaum Accused of Rape
"I thought Jacob was a friend and engaged in consensual sexual relations with him during those three days. It took me five months to process and understand that Jacob had violated my trust and my body. It is common for victims of rape to take months, if not years, to come to terms with this, particularly if the abuser is one in a position of trust to them."

What the actual fuck? This is insanity. I don't care for a throwaway account, I'm happy to put my name to this comment.

praulv··on Ask HN: How would your life change if Facebook/Twitter disappeared?
Really? I have almost everyone on LinkedIn which is to be expected once you've graduated.
praulv··on Facebook’s Political Unit Enables Propaganda
There's a difference inciting violence and hatred versus party propaganda.
praulv··on Why a Hedge Fund Started a Video Game Competition
It's a marketing gimmick. Along with a ridiculous algorithms heavy whiteboard interview process (think Manacher's, graph algos)... all for average compensation and you'll probably end up babysitting a database at most. Try talking to someone who actually works there before believing these fluff pieces.
praulv··on Drinking 3-4 Cups of Coffee Is “More Likely to Benefit Health Than to Harm It”
I'd counter that. Coffee makes me sit down and intently focus unmoved; time speeds by.
praulv··on Coders who trade: Wall Street designs its staff for the future
You are thinking of Q and Kdb which are used to process high throughput tick data.
praulv··on Brave expands Basic Attention Token platform to YouTube
Coincidentally, I was just looking at MetaMask which links to Brave. Can someone explain LI5YO how they're related? I understand MetaMask is a browser extension to access distributed transactional content on Ethereum. Not sure how Brave monetisation relates to that.
praulv··on Ask HN: We didn't get a single person to pay for our SAAS – what could be wrong?
Exactly as my sentiment below. I would try targeting this to non-tech freelancers e.g. healthcare professionals, writers, environmental/civil engineers.
