praulv··on Ask HN: I'm lonely. Are there any video chat support groups for solo founders?
If you're into exercise and working out, try going OUT (shopping, cafe, people mingling, malls) in the 2-3 hours right after a workout. Your energy levels are raised, you're a lot more vocal, relaxed and "open" along with a positive physical glow and a smile on your face. You are at peak likelihood of engaging in small talk with people in this state.
praulv··on Ask HN: We didn't get a single person to pay for our SAAS – what could be wrong?
Most serious freelancers will have accountants who provide (very crude) software portals which handle the company revenue stream tied to the business bank account. This allows each transaction to be reckoned against ongoing projects, raise invoices, handle documentation etc which are all present in that portal.

Admittedly, these tend to be quite crude but I have the added comfort that my accountant can get involved when necessary as they are familiar with it.

So perhaps the target market should be a different kind of freelancer.

praulv··on Coders who trade: Wall Street designs its staff for the future
Finally, some common sense and a realistic response.
praulv··on Coders who trade: Wall Street designs its staff for the future
Complete nonsense. Plus note the intersection between FPGA dev and ML is likely to be practically zero and equally useless at quant firms unless you're in an AI firm building ML on chip. Far easier to go from FPGA to ML than the other way round.
praulv··on Coders who trade: Wall Street designs its staff for the future
I think you're slightly confused at the distinctions between prop shops, hedge funds, asset managers, and model driven quant desks at investment banks. Having worked at at least 3 of these, I can tell you again:

On the sell side, it's just pricing and hedging out each other's increasingly complex structures. HFT Market makers have some merit in providing tight liquidity and low spreads. Don't even get me started on buy side speculation.

praulv··on Coders who trade: Wall Street designs its staff for the future
Counter view: I only work in the field because it's the only way in tech to pay rent where I live. I actually hate it, it's of zero value to society and frankly the trading/business side are real assholes under pressure
praulv··on Numpy: Plan for dropping Python 2.7 support
Yes, one of the most painful aspects of Python 2 to 3 migration.
praulv··on Ask HN: Why has no one created an “Amazon” driven by local businesses?
I love this, it's brilliant and solves most of the inventory concerns. If anyone knows of the business development team I'd be interested in the challenges they faced trying to scale this out.
praulv··on Ask HN: Why has no one created an “Amazon” driven by local businesses?
We're ignoring this for now because once we can prove a realtime synchronised searchable inventory MVP, you can solve the shipping problem separately. It's also a separate problem on the logistics front as you don't have a central warehouse. Thinking about it, it's an extreme subset of the same problem i.e. effectively infinite distributed warehouses.
praulv··on Ask HN: Best YouTube channel to learn C and C++?
The best Youtube playlists I've found for quickly absorbing fundamental concepts in C++ are:

https://www.youtube.com/user/BoQianTheProgrammer/playlists

I can't recommend these highly enough. Before diving into them, you should have a fundamental understanding of OOP, pointers and memory management.

praulv··on Alibaba hits nearly $18B in ‘Singles Day’ orders in 12 hours
For someone having never ordered from alibaba or aliexpres - other than briefly fleeting with drone spare parts - what exactly of use and purpose would you buy from there? I can see large scale uses for industrial machinery / commodities but what about the day to day consumer. Pointless gadgets? I briefly looked at lightinthebox for female accessories and they seemed tacky, overly glittery and just plain cheap looking. It did make me wonder about the premium Western consumers pay to line corporate profits for chinese factory products. Ignoring secure, specialised electronics factories, most day to day fashion accessories in Sachs 5th Av, Macy's etc will be quality controlled chinese/indian products. Is it possible to get hold of these on aliexpress?
praulv··on Quantopian hedge fund has lost about 3% since beginning of trading in June
>>It's not unheard of for top quant programmers to pull down 8-figures annually.

This is complete nonsense. What is your source? In the current environment, max low 7 figures will be heads of quant research or senior directors.

praulv··on How Retailers Use Personalized Prices
Except they're not the same products are they... often cheap imitations.
praulv··on How Retailers Use Personalized Prices
I've always wondered why it's not possible to get insider info from purchasing depts on factory details so we're not simply paying for over inflated brands to line corporate pockets.
praulv··on Switzerland: How buying real-estate can kill you financially/reasons for stocks
On the flip side, taxation for a married couple is negligible.
praulv··on Tesla fires hundreds from headquarters, factory
I used to be of the opinion that a company should have full right to drop dead weight as and when it chooses fit. The thing we forget is we, citizens, pay extortionate taxes to run a government which provides favourable incentives for companies to form and provide employment. They should, in return, be obliged to demonstrate some level of mutual benefit to employees, rather than purely incentivising shareholders' and directors' bonuses.
praulv··on Google Sued by 3 Female Ex-Employees Who Say It Pays Women Less Than Men
Genuinely curious as to what the questions are like... "what is the default constructor for X library object" type?
praulv··on Google Sued by 3 Female Ex-Employees Who Say It Pays Women Less Than Men
Let me guess, codility/hackerrank nonsense. No wonder you can't hire.
praulv··on It’s not that London is too big, but that other large UK cities are too small
I know, we even have a new pound coin down here that might trickle its way up through some petty change.
praulv··on It’s not that London is too big, but that other large UK cities are too small
To be clear, I meant UBS in London - I assume you're referring to UBS Zurich. It's quite common for Zurich offices to have a +20% cost of living adjustment vs London, so that figure equates about 80k GBP adjusted which is about in line with what most IB perm devs will make.
praulv··on It’s not that London is too big, but that other large UK cities are too small
Out of interest, what makes you think UBS is above average? I interviewed there recently and the emphasis was "our benefits are remote working and life work balance" - which is HR speak for low salary (though I do appreciate both).
praulv··on It’s not that London is too big, but that other large UK cities are too small
That sounds simple enough but I don't think you've factored in the long term state this transition would converge to in terms of effect on the local population.

Talent pull drives up prices, predictably displacing the local population. London to an extent already has seen this with the result now spreading to neighbouring areas (Milton Keynes, Beds, Slough).

Geographically, northern and midland cities tend to have far smaller centres with satellite villages linked by bus systems.

praulv··on Bad UX: How Booking.com deceives clients
Sadly I fell for the various tricks described here and hastily booked a room on holiday recently.

Having said that, my family of 4 adults with different credit cards made excellent use of their generous £15 referral reward kicking back both ways to save a significant amount on the total booking cost.

praulv··on Ask HN: How do I secure my future?
>> Tell people at interviews you left your last job because the environment was toxic. There's no shame in that.

I would strongly advise against this, especially hinting any grievance "toxic, abusive" etc. Employers are very risk averse and any sign of these words is a big red flag. Keep in mind the hiring manager you are only getting one side of the story. Phrase it tactfully and professionally.

praulv··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
Had a Dell 7537 (non XPS) and it is honestly the worst machine I have ever used, from physical reliability (broken hinges and parts) through to flat out non-functional components including numerous issues with Wifi. After falling for the looks, I've vowed never to get a Dell again.

Agreed, that sounds about right.
praulv··on YouTube Will Redirect Searches For Extremist Videos To Anti-Terrorist Playlists

praulv··on Abuses Hide in the Silence of Nondisparagement Agreements
How practical are these in a glassdoor world? There is no way an employer could track down an anonymous posting online and force you to relinquish your severance.
praulv··on Goldman Sachs relaxes dress code for techs in fight for talent
No way. £250K for a new Ph.D. with zero experience in industry? Even a low latency whiz kid with deep Linux kernel optimisation will just about maybe make £250K in a very good year.
praulv··on Goldman Sachs relaxes dress code for techs in fight for talent
Are salaries in IB tech on that level today? I doubt even a senior quant hedge fund / HFT firm developer makes anywhere near the quoted $400k.
