prateekj··on The Six Most Common Species Of Code
Totally! The large company version is hilarious too.
prateekj··on Why mathematicians make great comedy writers
True that!

"Clever humor, a product of wit, mental sharpness which usually comes with the ability to make correlations quickly and creatively." - That's a good way to put it. Couldn't agree more!

"Getting a joke to work best often requires A/B testing" - So true! We all do that in real life without realizing it.

The same logic can be applied to a variety of other fields as well. Many formulations within mathematics, signal processing, machine learning, AI, etc follow this. Higher level problems in real life usually have to deal with unknown terrains and the techniques need to adapt to that.
prateekj··on Ask HN: Should we change the name of our startup?
Yes, you should definitely change your name. These things always come back and bite you in the future. I just submitted my answer in that form.
prateekj··on Why mathematicians make great comedy writers
Exactly! Writing something that is both meaningful and interesting is like solving a puzzle.
prateekj··on Software engineers tell Glassdoor that Walmart pays more than Facebook
I was about to say the exact same thing before I read your comment. It doesn't matter if you get more money, you will still be a software engineer at Walmart!
prateekj··on Show HN: Simple Hacker News Client for Emacs
Nice
prateekj··on Alibaba IPO could raise $18B-$25B on $110B valuation
Exactly! Alibaba is killing it and Yahoo! needs cash. This would definitely go a long way in reestablishing Yahoo!, especially with all those recent acquisitions.
prateekj··on Ask HN: What are the best blogs and websites for mobile app developers?
Check out http://www.raywenderlich.com/. One of the very best tutorial sites out there for mobile app development! Appcoda is nice too, although it's only for iOS.
prateekj··on Netflix employee raises the bar for awesome customer service
Exactly! Big companies can learn a thing or two from this.
prateekj··on What does 'neat idea' mean?
One possible interpretation is that they think the idea is great, but the execution is not.
prateekj··on Ask HN: What can I learn in Bay area for a month?
"An artist by heart and hacker by profession" -> You are going to love Bay Area hackathons.

There are hackathons all over Bay Area almost every weekend. So pick the ones that interest you and give it a go. All good things start with people getting together at hackathons.

prateekj··on Why are all the startups in SF?
Startups need people. People need to have a life. SF offers precisely that!
prateekj··on What are some must-know algorithms?
Here are a few (in no particular order):

- Dynamic Programming

- Graph algorithms: Traversal (A*), shortest path (Dijkstra, Bidirectional, Floyd–Warshall), minimum spanning tree

- Recursive Search Techniques

- Search Trees (binary, n-ary, splay, AVL)

- Suffix trees

- Parsing using regex

- Sorting (with all the variations)

- Hashing

- Greedy Algos

- Divide and conquer

- Genetic algorithms

There are a few other algorithms that are must-know too. I guess that would depend on the domain we are in (computer vision, machine learning, NLP, etc).
