Have you tried Athens Research? [0]

It is open source and everything is stored locally but not in markdown files. You can self-host the desktop app to share notes.

prashantsengar··on India's richest man pouring $80B into green energy, including new ventures
Interestingly, current PM said in one of his election speeches in 2014 (when he was the CM of Gujarat) what you mentioned in point 1 (not exactly the same). I don't think there has been any progress there.

Otherwise, a lot of focus has been put by the current government towards renewal energy.

I believe most of their users are academicians - students writing their thesis. And I don't think a lot of them pay for its license themselves. It's their institute which purchases the license.
prashantsengar··on Chatbots: Still dumb after all these years
I use chatbots to search for pages on websites where search is otherwise broken, like one of my bank's. I have never found a good use for them.

They were once advertised to help your granny use the website but I haven't met a chatbot that could help me do something.

+1 for Zoho.

Simple, inexpensive but very effective.

prashantsengar··on Reddit files to go public
There's a difference in Second Life and the whole "metaverse" just as there is a difference between the time and tech then and now.

Not every tech is going to be successful at every time. The same solution can fail once and succeed some other time when there's a change in the market and/or the underlying technology.

There's a much larger number of human beings on the internet now. And they are not just on the internet, but they actively use it for a large amount of time. That's the chance in market right now and what will drive the adoption of metaverse soon.

The thing that we should focus on right now is whether we want a metaverse owned by Facebook or something that is defined by open protocols.

> I unsubscribed from Quora emails because I was troubled by all of the engagement manipulation in what they sent me and how well it worked

Exactly the same with me. Each time I received a Quora digest mail, I thought that I cannot get manipulated to open these spammy questions. But normally I clicked on multiple links leading to those answers.

prashantsengar··on Ask HN: What do you read for general knowledge?

prashantsengar··on TikTok has reached 1B MAUs
There are multiple different applications now, trying to be an alternative to TikTok. But none of them has consolidated the market.

Most used: IG Reels, MX Takatak (from MX player), Gaana shots. When TikTok was banned, there were dozens of apps trying to be the next big thing.

prashantsengar··on Lemmy – A link aggregator for the fediverse
I have to say that it does seem to be pretty good unlike many other federated alternatives to poplar social media platforms.

Pretty good means switching to it will not be too tough for Reddit users since most of the users (anecdata) preferred the older UI to which it is very similar and is easier to use on mobile.

This is what concerns me about telegram now. It has one of most open APIs and I have spent thousands of hours building bots for dozens of my stuff. Can't imagine a time when they restrict it just like Discord

prashantsengar··on Firefox lost 50M users since 2019
I can feel that too. But I have tried to sync so many times, tried reinstalling, used a different account but it never worked.
prashantsengar··on Firefox lost 50M users since 2019
I have been trying to switch to Firefox since long but have never been able to completely switch. There have always been some problems that send me away.

On my phone (Android), Firefox is quite good except a few UX issues (that I don't mind too much) but the sync with my desktop has NEVER worked.

On the desktop, FF has always been slow - in booting, loading pages. The same with Edge and Chrome just work.

If I could get it to sync, and if the desktop version worked, I would never go back to Chromium.

I have used Outliner too. There isn't exactly a difference between using them both. I prefer LogSeq because of the UI/UX that it provides for outlining. I would like to fix myself to a single app one day if possible, but for now Logseq and Obsidian work well for me.

Offtopic: It is such a nice co-incidence to meet you here on HN. I found you on YouTube yesterday while searching for Notion swipe files and then followed you on Twitter today. :).

prashantsengar··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
You can use LogSeq[1] if you'd like to continue with org-roam. It supports both Markdown and org-roam, stores data locally, and has a good community as well. It is still in beta though.

prashantsengar··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
I love using Obsidian and it is where all my notes live.

Last year when I was searching for wiki-type note taking tools, I stumbled upon many of them including Roam Research, TiddlyWiki, and then Obsidian. Obsidian is what I chose because of how it stores my data - markdown files.

And it does not lose any functionality even if it uses markdown. Bidirectional linking, block references, heading references, a beautiful graph - Obsidian features almost every feature you need.

It is also very customizable. You can use custom themes and build your own plugins to work better.

Though the only thing I think needs improvement is the outlining ability - it does not feel very intuitive in Obsidian. This is the reason I use LogSeq along with Obsidian. Now this also shows why interoperability is necessary, I do not have to worry about any data lock-in. I am free to use any notes editor along with Obsidian.

I use anonaddy for this. A generous free plan, really feasible paid plans, and is open source so you can self-host it as well.

I kept using the most popular telegram API library which is based on async.

I will check out SWF, thanks for the help!

prashantsengar··on Ask HN: What is the best architecture for a bot running background service
I had not looked into it till now but checking it out now.

Do you have any recommendations to where I should learn more about using it? (I am checking the docs to get a basic understanding rn)

prashantsengar··on Ask HN: What is the best architecture for a bot running background service
I am most familiar with Python and I am using it for the complete work.

The Telegram bot is written using a async-based library (telethon).

I should have also explained this in the post that when the user asks the bot to run the script, I do a `thread.start()`
