poyu··on Reddit crashed because of the growing subreddit blackout
Easy:

``` UPDATE subreddits SET is_private = FALSE WHERE is_private = TRUE AND updated_at BETWEEN 2023-06-11 AND 2023-06-12; ```
Bonus: Run it every hour
poyu··on Reddit goes down fully as thousands of subreddits protest API changes
While I do agree that Reddit probably doesn't care, the ad endpoint approach is harder to implement than one would imagine.
Normally ads have strict requirements for the placement (show one ad every x amount of posts), which would be hard to enforce across all 3rd party clients. Not to mention that they might be targeted towards the user, measure exposure time, and record interactions. I think the only way to do this is having some sort of SDK, but they probably determined that the cost would be too high.
poyu··on Val Town Pro - $10/month for more compute, storage, private vals
Something similar I’ve been using is RunKit. It’s easy to quickly test something out and forget about. Will keep Val in mind though!
poyu··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
> Where would Twitter be today if we could continue to use Tweetbot and other clients with our own single-user API-key or so?
So like OAuth? IIRC Twitter used that with all the 3rd party clients. I think the problem is that 3rd party clients filters out ad posts one way or the other. Your other point still stands though, just charge the user API access.
poyu··on There oughta be a bullet time video booth
There’s a kind of power cord that has a dummy battery that plugs into the mains. The camera’s battery door also has a hole to run the cable through. Searching for “dummy battery $CAMERA_MODEL” would get you what you want
Makes you really wonder why they’re doing this to themselves. Use whatever is most suitable. I try to use as less JS as possible.
poyu··on Ask HN: Products/Services you swear by – Dec. 2022
Fastmail. Been a loyal customer for more than 6 years. Using my own domains with it, the best part is you get to use more than one domains, with total of 600 alias addresses you can attach to your account. Great spam filter, doesn’t try to be smart categorizing your emails like Google. For $50 a year, it’s one of the cheaper subscription that I have while providing high value.
All modern credit card terminals have this built in. It has a mainboard/sub-board design. In case one or more contacts has been apart, the contents (assuming some kind of keys) on the sub-board are erased, something like a SRAM. Downside is it needs constant power source to keep the content, thus a rechargeable cell is on the board.
poyu··on Ask HN: Anyone highlight text as they read?
Yes!! And I use it with three finger drag on the Mac trackpad
poyu··on I didn't return my Apple Studio Display
All the new M1 MBPs (and the iPad Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro) have 120hz refresh rate. Not exactly 144hz but it matters enough that they put that on the whole product line.
poyu··on Connecting a gaming PC to Apple Studio Display
I didn't buy it, but personally I would get it just for the design.
poyu··on Ask HN: How can I make a “kid's computer” today as good as an Apple II?
+1 for Ben Eater's 8-bit computer, the videos are very well put together and easy to understand. It's even a bit addicting to watch them because you always want to get to the next step. I binged it in a matter of 3 days. His 6502 is also very good, I wonder if that can be a good computing platform OP is talking about.
Replit used to be good. I can open up a page and start writing code. But now it requires an account, and the UI feels less responsive than before.
poyu··on Millions Are Saying No to the Vaccines. What Are They Thinking?
As a US immigrant, it's very interesting to me how COVID-19 and vaccines became a political issue in the US. I guess if something that requires government involvement will become political at some point. Especially that US is a country with people from all sorts of backgrounds and experiences, makes it a very complicated country to govern.
