powerset··on Show HN: Coffeehouse, one-on-one voicechat with random HN users
I'm seeing an error:

powerset··on Kinesis Advantage 360
The FAQ makes it sound like it's an option, at least I hope so.

https://kinesis-ergo.com/keyboards/advantage360/#faqs

"Which keycaps should I get? This one is easy…

Dye-Sublimation PBT: These are premium keycaps that are resistant to sheen and and fade. If you don’t plan to use the backlighting then this is the set you want. You have a choice of Dvorak or QWERTY legends. Shine-Through ABS: If you want to work in a low-light environment you’ll need to select these if you want to be able to read the key legends. This set is only available with QWERTY legends at this time."

powerset··on “Coding is basically just ifs and for loops.”
I wonder whether you could apply this analogy to physics and science in general. If so it seems like we haven't reached the peak/middle yet.
powerset··on Facebook Renames to Meta
Glad to hear they're at least claiming their contribution to the metaverse will be built on open standards and protocols, I hope they follow through on that. Pretty sure nobody would want a walled meta-garden.
powerset··on Why bumblebees love cats and other beautiful relationships
+1 For recommending Origin as surprisingly enjoyable and worthwhile. The theory itself is explained clearly and quite interesting, but I think that's more of a bonus, and actually the best part is witnessing an early application of the scientific method, and getting the historical context for how the scientific method was developed. Very helpful context for understanding and thinking critically about modern science.
powerset··on Reality as a Vector in Hilbert Space
For some reason most of my comment contributions here are references to N.S. Glad to see I'm not the only one who immediately thought of this.
powerset··on Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills: study
This corroborates my experience interviewing at Amazon. Fortunately the recruiter prepped me well on what to expect and the LPs I should study. I was happy to "study for the test", and the interview went well. They even allowed me to bring a "cheat sheet" with notes about the stories I planned to tell, and I made myself a little index mapping stories -> LPs and vice versa. It was great practice and I carried those techniques (keeping the cheat sheet in my head) to other interviews, even though other companies don't put quite as much emphasis on LPs as Amazon does.

The questions didn't seem too veiled, but maybe that's because I knew what to expect.

powerset··on Ask HN: Great fiction books that have had a positive impact on your life?
I saw Siddhartha recommended a couple times here. It's a good one. If you like Siddhartha, I highly recommend reading Hermann Hesse's other books as well. My favorites are The Glass Bead Game (Nobel-winner) and Narcissus and Goldmund.

What I love about HH's books is that I feel as if I've lived the lives of his characters vicariously, passing through their struggles with them and coming out with hard-won wisdom and character. I feel like a better, wiser person for those books, with the kind of perspective on life that otherwise would have taken me a lifetime to achieve.

powerset··on Brown Political Review Interviews Paul Graham
Even if that's true about some modern philosophy, the old stuff is still worth studying!
powerset··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building projects?
I just previewed a few pages from "How Cars Work", and it listed this 'money saving tip' that I found pretty funny: "Don't ... make eye contact with police officers while driving"
powerset··on The Bus Ticket Theory of Genius
On the subject of encouraging kids to go deep and explore whatever they're interested in learning, I had that opportunity as a kid who homeschooled, and I think it benefited me a lot. Sure, I still had to spend some time learning things I was less interested in, like memorizing times tables, but I feel like the freedom to spend 50% or more of my time going deep and learning whatever I want (this is called "unschooling") did a huge amount to cultivate a lifelong love for learning that has served me well. It would have been hard to get that in public school.
powerset··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
Do you feel like learning this from someone in person was necessary, or could you get most of the benefit from reading or watching a video somewhere? If so, any recommendations?
powerset··on Some tea bags may shed billions of microplastics per cup
If you're willing to splurge a bit I recommend artoftea.com. Their purple oolong and earl grey are crazy good.

powerset··on Calcium could replace lithium in batteries that store solar and wind power
The tricky part to finding the formula for a good calcium battery (as it was with lithium batteries) is getting the interface reaction to work. It's a complicated reaction that is hard to understand or predict. Brute forcing different combinations will take a long time because the search space is large. There is some work going on to make better simulations to speed up the brute force search. I'm not a battery expert; this is all second-hand from a friend who is working on calcium battery simulation.
powerset··on Submit Your Claim in the Equifax Breach Settlement
I wonder what counts as a credit monitoring service. Can I choose what service I use? ...Can I monitor it myself?
powerset··on Dark Web Drug Sellers Dodge Police Crackdowns
> copmetent

Thought this was a typo at first, but given the context maybe the spelling was intentional and humorous!

powerset··on Show HN: Turn any WiFi into a persistent group chat
I'm curious why you chose to make it a mobile app instead of browser based.

Would it be possible to build it such that, when I visit the site I'm automatically dropped directly into the local chat room for whatever wifi network I'm currently on?

powerset··on Morgan Freeman Converts His 124-Acre Ranch into a Giant Bee Sanctuary
Not a coincidence, the Star Trek character is named after the real life Paul.
powerset··on Artificial meat: UK scientists growing 'bacon' in labs
Definitely an interesting idea, though somehow feels creepier to me.
powerset··on The CIA made a Magic: The Gathering-style card game for training agents
I know whether this game is intended to be a recruiting campaign, but if it is it seems like a pretty clever one.

Neal Stephenson wrote a pretty interesting essay on the societal implications of deemphasizing text. In the beginning was the command line: http://www.cryptonomicon.com/beginning.html

I've spent the past two years building a variety of freelance projects for clients, and my Github account contains Ruby, Python, and JavaScript repos. Prior to that, I held roles at a couple SF startups in marketing and analytics. If you have a smart team and an ambitious project, I would love to talk with you.

powerset··on How to Machine Learn
A nice little pep talk motivating study of linear algebra and why it's useful (e.g. pagerank):

powerset··on Meditation associated with preserved telomere length in breast cancer patients
reddit.com/r/meditation is pretty decent
powerset··on The Increasing Trend of Online Extortion
Crypto ransom is the premise for the novel Reamde by Neal Stephenson
powerset··on An Insanely Detailed, Hand-Drawn Map of San Francisco
From reading the title I thought I would get to see the map, but I was disappointed to find the page only tells you where you can go to buy such a map.
powerset··on FDA Dangles Golden Ticket to Spur Drugs for Neglected Diseases
In other words, it's a lever that the FDA can (will they?) use to solve an important problem: the discrepancy between drugs that bring the greatest profit and drugs that bring the greatest societal benefit. Potentially a loss of efficiency in the strictest economic sense, but also potentially a very good thing in terms of benefit to society.
