powerhour··on Things not available when someone blocks all cookies
Giving app developers bogus data would make it harder to use* and maintain, so that's a clear win, IMO.

* use as in use for the intended business purposes, not harder to write the code

powerhour··on Tell HN: HN London Meetup
I've definitely run in to those types at meetups. They're there to ruin the event for everyone (although I'm sure they themselves have a good time).

Thankfully it's possible to convince a smaller group to ignore them (don't feed the trolls etc) so you can have interesting conversations.

powerhour··on Xcode Cloud overview
Folks are sad that Hetzner, like most mainstream providers, has a policy against running crypto software and port scanners.
powerhour··on Observations from our Joe Rogan Experience experience
Contemporary identity politics are at least in part a response to the contemporary "occupy" movements, sure, and that's pretty much by definition.
powerhour··on Walmart Sells Fake 30TB Hard Drive That's Two Small SD Cards
"eBay gets away with selling random junk from random sellers, how can we get a piece?"
powerhour··on Becoming a Systems Architect
In my case my impact plummeted. Sometimes going in to management means having your hands tied -- you are the ones allowing higher ups to scale their impact. It was awful.

I'd love to be able to find folks that can do what I do -- it's probably our #1 issue holding us back -- and direct them to meet some business and technical goals, but I've yet to work at an organization that supports that mode of management.

powerhour··on Observations from our Joe Rogan Experience experience
You say trend like it is a recent phenomenon and not something that has been happening for centuries if not millennia.
powerhour··on Ask HN: How do you get side gigs?
Do you still have to go through interviews with clients? If so, how onerous are those?
powerhour··on Europe Is Getting Serious About Making Space-Based Solar Power a Reality
If the authors of the article are right, being able to beam power through "inclement weather" could be a huge win on its own.
powerhour··on Teslas Can Be Tricked into Stopping Too Early by Bigger Stop Signs
I wonder if there's some patent issue preventing them from using LiDAR and by extension preventing Musk from admitting its superiority.
powerhour··on The Big [Censored] Theory
You didn't include the laugh track and yet I still heard it.
powerhour··on 90s Cursor Effects
Oh dang. Thanks, I didn't realize that.
powerhour··on 90s Cursor Effects
Yup. I am glad we've moved on, at least on windows, to double-tapping left ctrl to highlight the cursor. It's a pleasant effect.

macOS's shake-the-mouse gesture isn't as nice. It's such a "violent" gesture that it feels like it will just reinforce the feeling of frustration for users.

powerhour··on Hacker News is a masterpiece
I agree to disagree a lot, but it may not be obvious. I just stop replying. I suspect I'm not the only one. I guess I could reply and say "agree to disagree" but it sort of feels like an empty gesture. Plus, back in my day, sending that to a Usenet group or mailing list: that's a paddlin'.
powerhour··on Hacker News is a masterpiece
I can't downvote yet (and will probably start over when I can[0]) but when I have in the past I reserved downvotes for comments made in bad faith (straw/steelmanning, etc).

I will admit I would sometimes feel compelled to downvote minority opinions instead of refuting them. On some subjects (eg abortion), I have seen the same opinions and arguments made for decades. I'm tired of seeing the same poorly thought out arguments again and again and again and again.

However I try to hold back and just ignore those comments these days. (Not always successfully..)

0: I use HN exclusively on mobile and the downvote button is too easy to press accidentally, so the privilege is actually a curse.

powerhour··on The silent majority in software
> but to me it seems like old fashioned unix stuff

It's exactly this for me. Unix has been around longer than I've been around and will outlive my career if not my life. Components have been successfully updated and replaced mostly without significant disruption. Unix is a model for producing and maintaining complicated systems.

powerhour··on They're trying to get me kidnapped and tortured, but Twitter doesn't care
> There is a solution to this: going to jail for murder.

Couldn't we find a solution that doesn't require the violent death of a person?

powerhour··on 30TB Portable SSD Hits Walmart for $39 but Stay Away from It
Amazon claims the excuse that their third-party sellers they rely on and contract with to provide goods to attract customers, but I'm not convinced it's valid (as you can probably surmise). Amazon ought to be required to verify the authenticity of products on their site, if only in the first batch.
powerhour··on Ask HN: What has been your experience with CockroachDB?
Cockroachdb uses the BSL which means you can't host it as a service for others. It's more of a "source available" license (that eventually converts to Apache, after a few years).
powerhour··on At $249 per day, prison stays leave ex-inmates deep in debt
What does homogeneity have to do with it?
powerhour··on 13 Months: The Kodak Calendar Experiment
7 day weeks is up there, too. I'm sure we could get used to 5 day weeks.
powerhour··on Your online identity is owned by your email provider (2019)
In my experience (from a few years ago) Mailgun had terrible deliverability to Microsoft and Yahoo. There would be long periods where those providers would return nothing but anti-spam errors, based on Mailgun's own logs.
powerhour··on $320k in hosting a month for ~8m monthly visits
Mainstream GOP darling Fox is also reporting this story, FWIW.
powerhour··on Poll: Contractors, what is your hourly rate
While we're at it, can we build a blockchain to store the votes already? It's 2022!
powerhour··on Fix it, Fork it, Fuck off (2019)
OSS used to be more collaborative but these days it is corporate to the point you have to sign a damned contract to get a contribution merged. I am not owed better, I am just sad for what we lost.
powerhour··on IPv6 support for cloning Git repositories from GitHub
Could you elaborate on this? What is being proxied, http requests? And can you use any CF IP?
powerhour··on Ask HN: Is it the norm for companies/startups to not give a damn about security?
I haven't experienced anything this bad. I've seen security lapses and have been able to fix them on my own or with a team, and I don't remember ever getting pushback.

It's probably time to start interviewing. Ideally before your employer's security woes become headline news. (Of course, if you've only been there a few months you can easily leave them off your resume once word of the flaws gets out.)

powerhour··on Are we going back to the cable days?
> Repeat some ten times, and we're right back to "guess I'll just pirate everything, because I can afford internet, but not internet plus another $100 for all the streaming services because the five shows I like are all on different platforms".

... or you wait to watch a show when you subscribe to the platform it is on. I just don't buy the argument that we must have access to everything at every moment from a single provider.

powerhour··on Patent Trolls Inbound: Our First Lawsuit

powerhour··on California moves toward banning new cars running only on gas by 2035
