pousada··on Ask HN: Is it still worth pursuing a software startup?
Guess I got the semantics wrong, not my first language _shrug_
pousada··on Ask HN: Is it still worth pursuing a software startup?
Of course profit is a priority how else are you going to pay the bills/employees etc?
pousada··on Ask HN: Is it still worth pursuing a software startup?
I hope this is sarcasm…
pousada··on STFU
In my experience 99% of people will turn down the volume or use headphones if you ask nicely.

I never in my life was confronted or even assaulted, even by noisy teenagers or grim looking men.

Not saying it’s impossible but I would guess it’s very unlikely. Ymmv

Yea I think I’ll write my own static generator that just combines 3 templates for header/body/footer and converts markdown from the body. Should be fun project.

I’m tired of the constant update pressure from existing solutions and I only need something dead simple.

And the minimum to file a lawsuit comes out to 100k at standard rates ? Or was it just a random number?

HTML.

Unironically have been migrating my static pages (from Nextjs and Eleventy) to plain HTML and love it. Of course depends on your use case if that is feasible.

It doesn’t shut them out though, they can still effect change on smaller scale - for example smaller regional and state governments. They don’t need to sit in the nation wide parliament and add noise. The rule also encourages cooperation and compromise which is arguably also more democratic than everyone staying in their more extreme position
pousada··on Confer – End to end encrypted AI chat
You don’t have to use Google login though? People building solutions like this that aim for broad adoption have to make certain compromises and this seems OK to me (just talking about offering a social login option, haven’t checked the whole project in detail)
pousada··on Confer – End to end encrypted AI chat
Do you know a better alternative that I can get my elderly parents and non-technical friends to use? I haven’t come across one and from my amateur POV it seems much better than WhatsApp or Telegram.

IMO the 5% rule is pretty good.

Otherwise we would have loonies like the Grey Panthers (old people party), the “Spiritual Party”, or the extreme right-wing “Republicans” (AFD is moderate compared to those) being able to vote on laws etc.

Of course that also cuts out some parties that I have supported in the past, but the system allows a lot of parties to participate that aren’t _that_ populist (e.g. the Greens, the Left, the Pirates (I think they managed to get a seat or two in the past))

Of course it’s not perfect, but I still think it’s one of the best flawed systems we came up with so far. We should keep iterating on it but very slowly and carefully.

Does it cost 100k minimum in the US to get a lawyer? Or am I misunderstanding something?
pousada··on Ask HN: How are you doing RAG locally?
Data is technically a plural but nobody uses the singular and it’s being used as a singular term often - which is completely fine I think, nobody speaks Latin anyway
pousada··on LLMs are a 400-year-long confidence trick
Sure but equating Theranos and LLMs seems a bit disingenuous.

Theranos was an outright scam that never produced any results, whereas LMMs might not have (yet?) lived up to all the marketing promises (you might call them slogans?) they made, but they definitely provided some real measurable value.

pousada··on LLMs are a 400-year-long confidence trick
Coca-Cola advertises itself as a “happiness machine” as something that brings people together, builds communities, creates love and friendship.

The latest slogan i can remember is “open happiness”.

I like fizzy sugar drinks as much as the next guy but Coca-Cola is not liquid happiness.

Edit: Dropbox marketing slogan is “for all things worth saving”

pousada··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
I personally don’t have that problem. I can find new good music easily on soundcloud/bandcamp/youtube - much more than I have time to consume. Maybe this 60x absolute slop thing is a problem if you use services like Spotify - which arguably are a much bigger plight upon artists than AI generated slop
pousada··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
I never said it’s impossible to be successful with slop, i said it still needs work and time investment to be successful
pousada··on LLMs are a 400-year-long confidence trick
It would make every marketing department and basically every startup founder conmen too. While I don’t completely disagree with that framing it’s not really helpful.
pousada··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
This has already been the case way before AI was a thing.

As a new artist you have to compete against 60+ years of music history - much of it really good music too.

fwiw modern recipe sites are awful - you have to scroll down literal minutes until you get to the recipe. LLMs give you the answer you want in seconds.

I’m certainly no LLM enthusiast but pretending they are useless won’t make the issues with them go away

pousada··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
Positing that AI generated code is always bad and buggy is delusional.

I have dozens of little programs and websites that are AI generated and do their job perfectly.

pousada··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
People who won’t invest anything and just want to make a quick buck won’t be successful with AI generated content/music.

You still need to invest significant time and effort to make it work.

pousada··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
The market was already flooded 20 years ago.

Your biggest competition as musician is not AI or any new music it’s the music released in the last 50 years.

I predict that slop won’t significantly change the game - which was already rigged against new (and good) artists when I was a little baby
