potwinkle··on No I don't want to turn on Windows Backup with One Drive
You're anthropomorphizing the lawnmower. Microsoft didn't do this to help or hurt users or ransomware. There's no deeper meaning behind the action past improving business metrics in order to meet goals and please management and shareholders. They're not thinking about good or evil when implementing this, even if the PR firms they hire might make it look that way.
potwinkle··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
why not just use sunshine/moonlight? RDP (and the other junk like X11 forwarding/VNC) has always been too slow for my use-cases. Movies or gaming would bring it to a halt. Meanwhile Moonlight gives me a clean 4k60fps with only ~25ms latency across the country.

The year of the Linux Desktop was like 3 years ago with Proton becoming good and the kernel getting a ton of improvements.
potwinkle··on Ladybird passes the Apple 90% threshold on web-platform-tests
It's not as fast or as feature-complete. That's OK for now, though.
potwinkle··on Ladybird passes the Apple 90% threshold on web-platform-tests
I've started using it for some websites. It's surprisingly very capable already.
potwinkle··on Snapdragon X2 Elite ARM Laptop CPU
Why can't I scroll on this page with the trackpad? Mouse scroll and arrow scroll both work fine.
potwinkle··on AMD Open Source Driver for Vulkan project is discontinued
This is great news for RADV development, I'm hoping someday we can even use ROCm on the open source stack.
potwinkle··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
The oilcorp-funded thinktanks don't like this answer, though.
potwinkle··on iPhone Air
It's been long enough that this doesn't seem true anymore. The current Macbook Air is fanless, and has around 18 hours of battery life with an 8-core M4.
potwinkle··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
I don't think they're teaching old people how to enable developer mode and sideload an apk onto their phone, rather than just asking for bank information over the phone with a convincing lie.
potwinkle··on Direct Sockets API in Chrome 131
Please don't paste unedited AI output as a comment to a discussion.
potwinkle··on Valve is testing ARM64 support for popular games
What are you talking about? Practically every Valve game has a native (non-Proton) Linux port.

Every Counter-Strike, every Team Fortress, every Half-Life (even Alyx), every Portal, DOTA 2, Artifact.

potwinkle··on Anthropic: Expanding Access to Claude for Government
I wonder if they really intend to control ethics of Sonnet's use in government or if it's just a nice thing to say.
potwinkle··on Mozilla sued for discrimination by former CEO-to-be
Interesting, seems like a pretty open and shut case.
potwinkle··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
I like it, I read the Design Document. Do you have any game concepts you are building with it? It seems like the kind of project that would be built with a game side-by-side.
potwinkle··on Stable Diffusion 3
I decided.
potwinkle··on Stable Diffusion 3
From the examples I see on Twitter, they are usually referring to the different cultures of Irish, European, and American white people. Gemini, in an effort to reverse the bias that the models would naturally have, ends up replacing these people with those from other cultures.
potwinkle··on Video Game Module for Flipper Zero
This is the only comment ever made on this 5 year old account?
potwinkle··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
Even if HDCP 2.3 was unsplittable (it's not, you just can't buy the tools on Amazon) it's a futile effort by rightsholders due to the analog hole. There will never be a way to show someone a video without showing them the video.
potwinkle··on GTA 5 source code leaks online
It seems the engine supports it as a target, even with NEON extensions
potwinkle··on Capturing the WebGPU Ecosystem
I'd rather know the sources than have every website be an opaque WASM blob.
potwinkle··on As I retire, my goal now is to release 40+ years of source code
Very cool to see such a long history, were the different projects you worked on related to what was going on at your job at the time?
potwinkle··on Satya Nadella admits giving up on Windows Phone and mobile was a mistake
What does the Steam Deck have to do with an ARM phone running a shitty locked-down version of "Windows" with a lobotomized DirectX that has half the features? You can whine all you want about OpenGL/Metal/Vulkan but it doesn't change the fact that Windows Phone failed where Android and iOS succeeded.
potwinkle··on Localsend: Open-Source Airdrop Alternative
Back button works for me on Firefox 118.0.2 (Linux). Posting because the other guy might not respond, I think the bug made him a little mad.
potwinkle··on Ask HN: New ThinkPad battery life on Ubuntu
You have to turn on video acceleration, install vaapi and make sure your browser is using it
potwinkle··on Rasperry Pi 5 Specs and Images Leaked from Element14?
https://www.phoronix.com/review/raspberry-pi-5-benchmarks/6

Phoronix has a review too. As fast as the the Orange Pi 5, which is an 8-core.
