My wife's ebike has two ABUS locks D locks that share the same key, very convenient.
potatochup··on Thoughts on the “guard” proposal for Go's error handling
I haven't seen such a problem with unwrap. Newer people use it but are quickly taught to use Err instead. The only times I use it is unreachable!()

Good?

potatochup··on Why Is Markdown Popular?
God, there is nothing that I hate more than MS teams editor. It's the worst of wysiwyg editing. Discord does it right imo.
potatochup··on Diem – Facebook open source Cryptocurrency written in Rust
I work in a safety critical critical software and we're starting to use Rust. Most other things at work are C or Ada, with a sprinkling of C++. Having a formal spec is nice I guess? But 90% of our chips are obscure special purpose CPUs anyway, so we're always trusting the vendors closed source version of gcc, and we find plenty of bugs. One of the upsides (from my perspective) of rust is that obscure platforms are less well supported, so we'll likely end up with an ARM core. This limits chip choices, but it means we end up using the same backend that apple does for their watch/phone/etc, which gives us a lot of confidence.
potatochup··on Is a ‘software engineer’ an engineer? Regulator says no, riling tech sector
I'm a mechanical engineer who writes software for my job because it's the easiest way to implement a PID controller. Do I get to be a software engineer? I haven't touched a CAD program in over a decade.
potatochup··on After cutting radar, Tesla now dropping ultrasonic sensors from its EVs
I disagree. What makes stainless steel more complicated than painted steel/aluminum? The Model X already has totally internal ultrasonic sensors facing outwards on the falcon doors. I don't see why that couldn't be repeated with the stainless cybertruck
potatochup··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
How does this indicate that they are losing? In what regard?

They certainly aren't losing on being a money making enterprise, before or after this change.

Or did you mean w.r.t. having autonomous cars? I don't see how adding more work will buy runway...

potatochup··on How mechanics keep 50-year-old BART trains running: Windows 98, eBay, and scraps
It was originally designed that way to cope with high winds across the Golden Gate Bridge (even though those plans got scrapped)
potatochup··on Next-gen BMW EVs to get new battery tech for 620-mile range
Agreed. Tesla needed flashy new tech to attract early adopter buyers, and also to attract talented engineers. Now that EVs are somewhat accepted by mainstream, only now we see the likes of Ford coming out with the comparatively normal EV F150.
potatochup··on Next-gen BMW EVs to get new battery tech for 620-mile range
What lead did BMW ever have? The i3 was always way overpriced for the range and size.

Agree on Nissan though. The leaf used to be the only cheapish EV available in the USA but Chevys newer products and prices look far more competitive

potatochup··on Serving a high-performance blog solely from memory, using Rust
Most (all?) Intercontinental cables will be fibre optic. So it's the speed of light (in glass, not a vacuum)
potatochup··on San Francisco braces for commercial real estate crash
For the USA specifically, does being underwater actually matter as long as you can afford the repayment? It's my understanding that most mortgages are fixed for 30 years so your interest rates won't be changing?
potatochup··on EV adoption in US is happening faster than predicted
Depends on what is doing (see, Tesla sentry mode which keeps the cameras on) but otherwise self-discharge is well under 1%/day for most EVs
potatochup··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
Funny, it was always "purple rise" where I grew up, but the meaning is the same
potatochup··on Generate pitch decks using GPT3 from 1-line ideas
I love how your example compared the market cap to Missouri's GDP, somewhat implying there something particularly bad about Missouri.

potatochup··on Shifting to EVs is not enough. The deeper problem is our car dependence
What's wrong with asphalt? It's very recyclable, and a byproduct of existing industrial processes. Concrete is very CO2 intensive by comparison.
potatochup··on 2023 Chevy Bolt EV is still the best value EV in America, by far
Interestingly, if you bought a 2022 model (for 6k more) chevy are offering you a cheque for 6k, provided you promise not to join the class action lawsuit about the older models.
potatochup··on Tesla on autopilot rear ends motorcycle on freeway, killing rider
The most expensive thing in transit service for a lot of smaller cities is paying for the drivers. If you want more shorter headways, longer service hours then you're paying a lot more for additional drivers.
potatochup··on Ford's answer to EV supply chain hell: Cheaper batteries
At least at the moment, it's usually more efficient to recycle the good cells from an old pack into a new pack for automotive use. The chemistry between automotive and residential use diverges significantly because they are optimizing for different things: Car batteries minimize weight and maximize power input/output. For residential, weight barely matters at all, but # of discharge cycles and thermal stability matter more*. In 10 years, who knows what the economics will turn out to be though.
potatochup··on A personal trainer is the best investment I've made
As someone who is pretty involved in social dance communities, I agree. The bar is pretty much: don't be a creep, don't injure anyone. Then if you're at least a little bit friendly you'll be welcomed.

The only downside (for some) is that scheduling can be inflexible, and it's usually an evening activity so not great for early birds.

potatochup··on ML is not that good at predicting consumers' choices
The difference being, some poor sod doesn't have to carry you to the cargo hold of the plane.
potatochup··on Amazon to Acquire One Medical
Milk is a classic loss leader though. It's (intentionally) hard to compare overall prices between supermarkets
potatochup··on What’s the Biggest Bird in the World?
When I'm bored of having the same conversation about NZ* over and over again, I'll tell people these still exist, and as kids we grew up learning to always have one kid looking out for eagles when playing outside.

*Anything related to Lord of the rings, sheep, "oh I'd like to visit!", comparisons with Australia, border lockdowns, etc

potatochup··on Extreme UK weather: flights halted as runways melt and temperatures exceed 38C
Possibly different mixes depending on the environment.
potatochup··on Sitting and standing at work (2015)
The last sit-stand desk I had at work used LIN to talk between the interface and the motor. We built a little injection board to program this in for us. If you don't mind hacking the interface, it would be easier to solder something directly onto the microswitches and control that from an Arduino or whatever.
potatochup··on Where is there more livestock than people?
Yes, but the same applies to pretty much any country with agricultural food animals.
potatochup··on Pipenv: Promises a Lot, Delivers Little (2020)
This kinda works, but it isn't a cross-platform solution.

The hallowed pen licence! Our classroom had a sheet on the wall listing those who were allowed to be issued pens. Didn't make mine until year 6 I think.
