possibleworlds··on Ubiquiti Networks Breach
My primary use case for a home router is solid set and forget qos. fq_codel and cake were recently added to routeros v7 beta, which means I will be plugging in my hEX again after a few years of happy edgerouter x usage.

Also interested in what access points (besides unifi) people pair with mikrotik routers. Any wifi 6 recommendations?

possibleworlds··on Next.js Commerce store, one-click deploy to Netlify
Just a personal gripe looking at the commerce.js site... I don't understand why people build these insanely complex spa sites yet put no effort into browser caching and lazy loading media files with correctly sized placeholders / containers. The merchants page has layout jank on every load due to this.
possibleworlds··on TailwindCSS v2.0
Hey, check out https://piccalil.li/cube-css/, but more specifically the stack used for the picalilli website itself (check the footer): https://github.com/hankchizljaw/gorko and https://utopia.fyi
possibleworlds··on The polls messed up
They sure talk about it a lot on places like reddit. Justification being a belief that it is not truly anonymous, and the info will be used against them down the track in various ways.
possibleworlds··on Benchmarking static website hosting providers
And to run the tests using updown.io instead of Pingdom. It has a great api for this kind of thing.
possibleworlds··on On the Use of a Life
A bit off topic, but I am major fan of single developer apps and services. They generally have a focus and lack of bloat that makes them invaluable as tools to just get things done, and because of the small business footprint they don't need to endlessly scale into oblivion to satisfy shareholders / staff wages etc. Off the top of my head I am thinking of things I use regularly like pinboard, mailmate, Name Mangler, manager.io. Even builtwith.com is (or was for a long long time) one person!
possibleworlds··on Cozy is a modern audiobook player for Linux
Does the sleep timer leave a marker for where you set it? Need to double check this, I feel I’ve noticed it before but not consistently enough to know it’s a thing.
possibleworlds··on Cozy is a modern audiobook player for Linux
I wish audiobook apps had bookmarking. I often fall asleep to audiobooks and have to scrub around trying to find my place next time I want to listen. A visual bookmark unrelated related to playback position would be so handy. Seems like obvious functionality to me, does anyone know of an iOS player that does this?
possibleworlds··on Olympus quits camera business after 84 years
All true. I do hold out hope for a “true” foveon return. And you can still grab Merrill models second hand, like I did about a year ago.

I mainly use an Olympus em5 mkII so I’m saddened by the OP news, although I will wait to see how it plays out before switching to Ricoh and/or Pentax. Guess I have a thing for the underdogs.

possibleworlds··on Olympus quits camera business after 84 years
Agreed. There's also the Fujifilm X-Trans sensors which try to recapture some of the magic of film. However I really wish more people knew about Sigma and their Foveon sensors[1].

The fact is that there is a completely different technology on the market which produces very different – and arguably far superior – image quality and colour reproduction compared to 99% of digital cameras on the market. The Sigma system can be clunky and the sensor tech has its drawbacks (eg almost unusable above 200 iso), however given the right conditions the images they produce can be stunning.

possibleworlds··on Now Open – AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region
From memory the initial development on AWS was actually done in South Africa. Yup, here we go... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Amazon_Web_Servi...
possibleworlds··on Trump Halts U.S. Funding of World Health Organization
Also, this move is 100% Trump deflecting attention from the narrative of his own mis-management. He doesn't care about WHO, he probably didn't even know it existed until a few weeks ago.
possibleworlds··on Radiooooo – The Music Time Machine
Now I remember a friend sending this to me a while back. Thanks for the info and script!
possibleworlds··on Radiooooo – The Music Time Machine
Nice! I collect tropical, good to see something like this do well. Can I ask about the motivation / team behind it?
possibleworlds··on This Artwork Does Not Exist
The Apple Maps screenshots book and 9-eyes.com are two projects that really stood out for me. Neither was intentional and both involved curation, which is perhaps what is missing from this (and similar) projects.
possibleworlds··on Time Machine in macOS 10.15.3 is very slow on first full backup
It’s by the writer, check his downloads page for The Time Machine Mechanic. Whilst you are there check out some of his other apps. Personal fave is Podofyllin, a brilliant little pdf viewer.
possibleworlds··on Ask HN: Do you curate links/bookmarks?
+1

The Alfred workflow makes capture and tagging pretty seemless.

Edit: just read the op properly, not after pinboard. I also would like a visual manager mainly for design refs. I don’t personally use it but Are.na is a cool platform for visual bookmarking of media alongside articles / sites.

possibleworlds··on Unbearable news
The Guardian website, whilst not perfect according to the standards of the article and some other posts, is very performant. They have ads and other dynamic content, but load is deferred on this stuff and wrapped properly to avoid reflow, so the entirety of the article text is immediately readable. Just for interest, see also their tech blog [0] and their entire frontend on GitHub [1].

I can ignore ads, but what I find incredible on major (insert news/tech/whatever here) sites is the reflow from not properly reserving space for both ads and lazyloaded images. The following seems particularly to be a problem on mobile and in apps like Apple News: load a page, scroll to the meat of the article, then experience 1, 2, 3 page jumps as stuff loads in above your scroll position.

possibleworlds··on I made a website about the jacaranda trees of Maui, Hawaii
Wow. We have about 12 on our short street in inner city Sydney and I thought that was impressive.

I always find it bittersweet how short the bloom is.

possibleworlds··on Super-resolution on the Pixel 3
Whilst this is genuinely amazing work and very exciting, I would just like to point out a few things.

The comparable tech in digital cameras is not limited to tripods and static scenes as stated, some cameras can do this hand-held.

Shifting pixels 4 times results in increased detail, however Olympus and Panasonic’s approach is to shift the sensor 8 times in half-pixel increments, resulting in dramatically increased resolution as well.

The main issue with the current implementations in digital cameras is still objects in motion, which camera makers are trying to solve in-software with mixed results.

If rumors are to be believed there are advances on the way for this tech in digital cameras, particularly in relation to shutter speed and perhaps low light, but I don’t think you’ll see this trickle down to cheaper models for a few years yet.
