possiblelion··on XMPP, a comeback story
Have you looked at Mio? https://youtu.be/0mAXRUgJtgg Basically does what you're talking about
possiblelion··on Carbon-neutrality is a tale: the race for renewables is burning Europe's forests
Is there a reason this old article from January was posted again now? As someone from Estonia, it's quite biased in my opinion and takes some fringe viewpoints and presents them as representing my people.
possiblelion··on Metal-Eating Bacteria Devours a Nail in Just Three Days
Reminds me of the time the U.S Navy launched balloons filled with Serratia marcescens bacteria (the same kind that causes pink slime in showers) all over the Bay Area coastline, believing them to be completely harmless for humans. Of course it wasn't and multiple people got hospitalized and even died. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serratia_marcescens#Role_in_bi...)

Very interesting bacteria however, also believed to be responsible for the miracle bleeding of religious monuments.

possiblelion··on Tobacco firm Philip Morris calls for ban on cigarettes within decade
PMI is shutting down cigarette production in all its forms anyway and focusing on using their inhalation expertise in the medical sector + e-cigarettes and IQOS products. Just some context.

possiblelion··on Juul bought an entire issue of a scholarly journal
Well, nicotine addiction is a debatable topic as nicotine itself is actually not addictive as a compound.
possiblelion··on Tour of the server room in the Airbus 350
Compared to many other planes it's actually quite roomy!
possiblelion··on Adventures in Contacting the Russian FSB
I would really love a detailed breakdown of the FSB executable, preferably running on bare metal and from the IP of a likely target country (Ukraine for example). Seeing how RU-intel operates I really wouldn't put it past them to send different payloads depending on who downloads. Especially if they are all generated customly.
possiblelion··on Brian Armstrong sold $291.8M in Coinbase shares on opening day
In a direct listing they have to sell, otherwise there would not be any shares on the market.
possiblelion··on Äike – First e-scooter developed and assembled in Europe
Some context on the price and product: I'm not affiliated with the manufacturers of this, but I own their previous model and have used their scooter rent service in Tallinn extensively. Compared to Xiaomi/Ninebot etc these are much-much more comfortable to ride.

The larger platform to stand on makes it quite stable and the brakes are much better as well. Just my two cents.

possiblelion··on Stop Spotify Surveillance
This seems like a sensational ad for this guys new album, using fear-mongering to drive clicks and fame. It's a patent, not a feature. Besides, if they are so against surveillance capitalism, why use Google Analytics?
possiblelion··on Academic “ghost-writing”: the cheating scandal no one will discuss (2020)
Hey HN admins! This is actually an ad! The website "unemployedprofessors.com" has a really really strong guerilla marketing campaign going on all over the web. They've used a bunch of instagram meme accounts to do undisclosed promotions (such as @russiansinlondon) and spread these articles about the "problem" of ghostwriting while actually just promoting them.

The real article on HN should be about how this company is using all these crazy tricks to get them traffic.

possiblelion··on The EMA Covid-19 data leak, and what it tells us about mRNA instability
Wait, so what effect does potential RNA instability really have?
possiblelion··on Googling Strangers: One Professor's Lesson on Privacy in Public Spaces (2019)
I think most of us have done something along these lines, whether out of boredom or just curiosity.
possiblelion··on Before you buy a Soviet Camera
I have a Fed-3 that my grandfather, a photojournalist in Soviet Estonia used for his work. After simple repairs it works great and shoots gorgeous pictures. It's a lot of fun to use as well!

possiblelion··on I Miss My Bar
I love the music choices. Cool to see Lexsoul Dancemachine in the playlist too, cheers from Estonia!
possiblelion··on I Miss My Bar
Estonia is a better option. Bars and restaurants are open, all without a bloody dictator.
possiblelion··on Google Safe Browsing can kill a startup
The section about ants and Google shifting on its planetary chair is perhaps the best part of this article. A sobering way to look at it.
possiblelion··on To the moon: defining and detecting cryptocurrency pump-and-dumps (2018)
absolutely, Deribit is the market leader on that. just be careful, put options on BTC have bankrupted a lot of people.
possiblelion··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
+1 to SwiftKey. I use a mix of English and Estonian and SwiftKey handles it amazingly. Almost never suggests the wrong language when I start typing.

Honestly I can't use the default keyboard in iOS anymore because it lacks multilingual support. How it still isn't a thing in 2020 boggles me.

possiblelion··on Watercooling a Canon R5 to enable unlimited 8K recording
Damn, I'm not a field that requires camera use at all, but that Blackmagic Pocket looks very very impressive. Makes me want to impulse buy just to mess with it.
possiblelion··on Proptee: £0 commission property stock exchange
Oh this is cool. However always wary of what happens to my property investment when the startup folds.
possiblelion··on Coinbase Pro Disables Margin Trading
hahah, was going to say the same thing.
possiblelion··on What Bitcoin’s White Paper Got Right, Wrong and What We Still Don’t Know (2018)
you could mine 50 btc a night with a q6600 in ~2010
possiblelion··on We Hacked Apple for 3 Months
"Our proof of concept for this report was demonstrating we could read and access Apple’s internal maven repository which contained the source code for what appeared to be hundreds of different applications, iOS, and macOS."

This itself is massive. How many 0-days could emerge from something like that?!

possiblelion··on We Hacked Apple for 3 Months
Jesus, that prebaked password on the Jive platform was really bad. Especially as one could ultimately access nearly the entirety of Apple's internal network from that.

Makes me wonder, if these guys could do it, how many Chinese industrial espionage units have?

possiblelion··on The AN-225: How the Cold War created the world's largest airplane
that's the problem, Antonov is based in Kyiv, Ukraine
possiblelion··on Germany bans digital doppelganger passport photos
What do you mean by this? What kind of black market goods did you have access to?
possiblelion··on Dutch spies helped Britain's GCHQ break Argentine crypto during Falklands War
So you're trying to tell us that Russian APT teams could not have hacked into DNC servers because there might have been an internal leak instead?

Why not both? Why would Dutch intelligence care about supporting a random political faction in the United States?

possiblelion··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life
How did you happen to take Juhan Liiv's poem without knowing Estonian?
