posharma··on Ask HN: How do you stay productive after work hours?
Jeez...stop this fetish of copying what others do on HN. You've no idea what their work situation is. May be they've a week or two of downtime before their next project. I suggest you relax instead and do your favorite leisure activity - reading, playing with kids, music, whatever...Please don't live up to others' expectations esp. HN.
posharma··on Nim version 2.0.0 release candidate
Are there any products/companies that use Nim in production?
posharma··on We are drowning in information while starving for wisdom (2021)
Don't we all know this? I would love to see solutions than a rewording of the problems that we all are already facing :-).
posharma··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022?
Interesting. What other books are mandatory reading for managers at Facebook?
posharma··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
Yes, I’m aware of that. I still don’t feel it is worth so much discussion.
posharma··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
So? Why so much discussion about this? Are we going to discuss this again when he's back on Twitter?
posharma··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
"We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort. There is no way to sugar coat this; I think out organization is operating at half the effectiveness that would make me happy. Some may scoff and contend we are doing just fine, but others will laugh and say "Half? Ha! I'm at quarter efficiency!"

This is true for any large organization, not necessarily Meta. Look at Google, Microsoft, Amazon and others.

posharma··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
Success in the corporate world requires more than technical prowess. One of those things is influence. It's not for everyone.
posharma··on Min: A fast, minimal browser that protects your privacy
All software products start like this - minimal, less memory, etc. Wait for a few months and things go south. Sorry, doesn’t excite me.
posharma··on Just use Postgres for everything
Just use the right tool for the job at hand. If it’s Postgres for now, sure. There’s really nothing more to this. Period.

But saying this would not make for a blog post. I can’t help but categorize this post as juvenile at best. Generalizations like “use XXX for everything’ should be avoided at all costs. No software product serves well to such sweeping generalizations. I’m surprised that it’s coming from a CTO. They should know better if they’re worth their salt .

posharma··on How to write like Malcolm Gladwell
I love reading Gladwell's books. They're a light and entertaining read. Not all his arguments are valid, but that's the case with most books in this genre. If I want to read something academic I would do that, but that's not why I pick up his books. I read Gladwell to gain some knowledge, some fun and some entertainment. I sure have learnt many things from his books and took them as cues to go deep elsewhere.
posharma··on PyTorch 2.0
Is this really the biggest problem that needs to be solved in AI?
posharma··on Show HN: Natural Language Processing Demystified
Thanks. Excellent course.
posharma··on Show HN: Natural Language Processing Demystified
Who is the intended audience for this course? Is it application developers looking to use NLP in their apps? Or machine/deep learning devs?
posharma··on Improving code review time
Disclaimer: these are anecdotal reports. I've heard from a lot of my friends how abysmal the quality of code is at Meta. Obviously, this may not be true in all teams/products, but that's the general sentiment. Why make it faster when you're already dealing with mess! This is abundantly evident from the constant fire fighting, duct tapes and a metric driven culture that incentivizes the number of diffs landed.
posharma··on Blind: Meta's office to be closed on Wed – 15% layoff (5% Eng 50% recruiting)
I wish I could down vote this (submission of a Blind link).
posharma··on Salesforce Plans for Major Layoffs
1000 out of ~75k. That's 1% of the workforce. Would you call that "major"?
posharma··on The type system is a programmer's best friend
Oh man! why did you bring up IDEs. Now we'll argue ad nauseam about emacs vs vi vs vim vs etc.
posharma··on Stop Writing Twitter Threads
Completely agree. Whatever happened to long form writing!
posharma··on Lessons learned building an ML trading system that turned $5k into $200k (2019)
Thank you sir. I’m one of those who scans the comments first and boy did this habit serve me well this time! Skipped the whole article.
posharma··on Staff Engineer Archetypes (2020)
Wow! Why the downvotes?
posharma··on Staff Engineer Archetypes (2020)
Archetypes sharkitypes whatever…who cares! Identify a need in your organization and step up to meet/exceed that need. Done. Don’t need fancy titles, archetypes.
posharma··on “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?” (2017)
Tumblr is still around?
posharma··on I need structure in my life
What is so special about this blog? Why is it getting so much attention?
posharma··on A CTO should be technical
Every single person has different opinions about how technical a non-IC should be (manager, director, CTO, VPE, etc). There's really nothing to argue here - it's not one way or the other. It all depends on the maturity level and size of the company and also an individual's personal interests. Moreover, in our industry where job roles/responsibilities are not uniform or standard, it's not surprising to come up with your own versions of each role. It's no surprise why a Principal Engineer from one company may or may not stand a chance to make a lateral move to another. These kinds of articles come up every day and I strongly feel that they are an utter waste of time. Stop generalizing. Talk about what the CTO is expected to do at "your company" only.
posharma··on Note-taking isn't rocket science
And yet we've 61+ comments discussing note taking yet again.
posharma··on Meta Fined $400M for Treatment of Children’s Data on Instagram
A drop from the ocean.
posharma··on A Regular Expression Matcher (2007)
Only Rob could pull this feat. Not for the lesser mortals :-)
posharma··on How SQLite scales read concurrency
What's with so many SQLite posts on HN these days? Never saw so much love for sqlite before.
posharma··on Meta slashes hiring plans, girds for 'fierce' headwinds
Does Meta really think they’ll be able to attract talent this way?
