What about South?
porter··on OOP in Python (live streaming class for beginners)
This is a slick interface and the perfect way to learn how to code.
porter··on How to Value Your Startup Business (2011)
If there is no revenue then you can also take a top-down approach by looking at the number of potential customers in your market you expect to capture. Then base the valuation off of that expected future revenue scenario. VC funding just helps you get to that future destination, ultimately giving your investors their 10x return.
porter··on Why I'm Interested in Bitcoin
The reason why you carry cash is because you sometimes find yourself in situations where a credit card won't work - tipping the valet, vending machines, car washes, etc.

In what cases will bitcoin be better for small transactions online than a credit card? I'm at a loss for examples.

porter··on Started a stupid company. Failed.
Because people who take these risks change the world. Failure just goes with the territory sometimes. Without entrepreneurs, you'd have life filled with many more daily aches and pains. We need to celebrate these folks. They are the real heroes of society.
porter··on Coin
This looks like one of those game changers that everyone says will never work. But then somehow they figure it out and change the world. VCs should be all over this.

Yes
porter··on Show HN: Beer-as-a-service
First beer I ever brewed was actually a porter!
porter··on Show HN: Beer-as-a-service
This would be cool if I brewed every month. That would be a lot of work though and I can see the kits piling up until I cancel your service. Maybe mix it up and for people like me have the option of getting a hand picked craft beer pack on off-months (when I don't have time to brew).
porter··on Pass the Rap Genius Tech Interview, Get $1,000 Cash
Is it just me or are all those annotated links super confusing? I tried clicking on their jobs page link, but it just gave me this slow loading pop up thing with zero helpful or related info. Cool idea on the $1k though.
porter··on Non-technical founder? Learn to hack
That's what I did and I am so glad I did. Now I have paying customers and growing revenues. If I can do it so can you!
porter··on Ask HN: I'm afraid I will always be a mediocre developer
First of all, it's so great that you have a desire to get better. That alone puts you ahead of most people. So, how do you actually get better? Take an inventory of your weaknesses. Now eliminate them, one by one. Next, start building stuff in your spare time. Read code on github, fork repos, create your own. A lot of what you make won't be good, but keep at it. Over time the projects that you keep working on will improve, your weaknesses will be eliminated, and you'll be doing side projects that stretch you. If you keep at it you'll be great at whatever you set out to be great at.
porter··on Linux screensharing
This has always been a problem for me. I can't even use gotomeeting on my ubuntu machine, which is my primary OS. Great to see someone working this out.
porter··on Ask HN: Inbox for everything?
Browser tabs?
porter··on Ask HN: What SSL certificate provider are you using and why?
RapidSSL because they were cheap and 37signals used them too.
porter··on Why I'm Not learning to code
Learning to code is the best way to understand coders. Plus you'll be able to build your own stuff to boot! Seems like a no-brainer to me.
porter··on Ask HN: This is our YC W2014 application. Can you give me feedback?
Here's some feedback on the last questions about something surprising you've found. Instead of putting something any middle schooler could find on google, you should but a unique insight instead. For example, what features (out of the many you claimed to have built), have had surprising results? Perhaps this could be something nobody thought would move the needle, but ended up as a breakout success. This would provide a much more powerful insight, and also help justify the product you want to build.
porter··on Mark Cuban makes Shark Tank remove equity clause in contract
Kinda sounds like a jab at all the entrepreneurs that have appeared on the show already in exchange for an automatic stake.
porter··on The Growth Hacker Movement Is Poisonous

porter··on Why I Play Video Games
I watched season 1 of house of cards on netflix. I noticed kevin spacey's character plated halo late at night to unwind. Realized it would probably work for me too, so I bought the new metal gear game on xbox the other day. So far it's working.
porter··on Ask HN: How to best acquire theoretical computer science knowledge?
I studied finance in college. A few years later I asked a similar question, ended up enrolling as a post-bac student, and taught myself web development.

First, you need to figure out exactly what you want to learn. By theoretical, what do you mean? If your goal is to be on the same level as other programmers who are CS grads, then you might consider digging into algorithms and data structures and discrete math. This is pretty much the base of anything theoretical you'll do in computer science.

If you're in it to learn, go the udacity route. If, after completing all of their courses, you still feel you have some gaps, then you can go back to school if need be. If, on the other hand, your goal is to go into research, then you'll just have to bone up and go back to grad school to be taken seriously. In research, credentials matter.

porter··on Morgan Stanley CEO: The probability of another financial crisis is close to zero
I bet that's what he said before the last crises too.
porter··on How Technology Is Destroying Jobs
The answer to a complex system like the economy is never so simple. Technology, the shift from a productive to a finance, insurance and real estate economy, artificial interest rates, stock bubble, housing bubble, credit crises....

There are a lot of factors that contribute to fewer jobs. When it comes to technology, yes, technology destroys jobs. But never on a net bases. 100 years ago 40% of our economy worked in agriculture. Today it's less than 2%. Yet people aren't longing for the days of farming. Technology alone is not the culprit.

porter··on The Coding Bootcamp That Wants To Be The CS Degree Of The Future
Hard to be a decent software engineer without learning discrete math, proofs, algorithms & data structures. These boot camps unfortunately don't teach these topics with any depth. They might be a good fit depending on your goals, but I am skeptical that they are a replacement for a traditional CS degree.
