Just a bunny, who's been known to program, engage in wildlife photography, and indulge in musical noodlings. Projects have included a Bezier-based video codec, audience response keypads, video on an 8MHz CPU, and other wild and woolly undertakings.

C's my stock in trade, with C++ along for the ride, but assembly.. now there, some serious fun becomes possible. =:)

Apple does have a crawler of its own, which feeds into Siri's knowledge. But, there's no public front end to use it as a search engine, though there was up to about 2021 or 2022, provided as a bit of fun by some enterprising third party.

Hugely nifty work! Makes me wish I had an M1 system even more so I could help out.
porsupah··on We may soon have city-spanning 900 MHz mesh networks
For a good example of how such a mesh network can indeed function well, consider Ricochet, which once offered service in a few metro regions, including the Bay. The relay units were typically mounted on utility poles, by arrangement with the relevant agencies.

True, 128kbps wasn't anything that'd compare with 4G, but this was 1999. It wasn't great at handoffs either, but still, I was able to use it on BART regardless. Imagine, connected to the net - on the move!

porsupah··on Achieving full-motion video on the Nintendo 64 (2000) [pdf]
I rather wish the 3DO version of The 11th Hour had seen release, but the publisher canned the project quite late in development.

There, we had about an hour of video - on CD, it should be noted, not a cartridge - at 288x320 (using an interlaced display mode, which virtually nobody used beyond splash screens), with a perfectly solid 30fps. Left unregulated, the decoder yielded around 40-70fps. All ARM assembly, and a huge amount of fun to write. ^_^

No hardware acceleration, needless to say, other than page blitting to copy the previous frame to the current buffer.

porsupah··on In Memoriam of Charles “Chuck” Peddle
Indeed - from the earlier, pioneering home computers like the PET and Apple II, through to the generation that followed, with the likes of the Commodore 64, VIC-20, and BBC Micro, the 6502 influenced a boggling number of programmers, myself included.

(And without the BBC Micro, would Acorn have eventually designed the Acorn RISC Machine, itself having since proven quite influential?)

porsupah··on A Look Back at Why Blockbuster Really Failed and Why It Didn't Have To (2014)
Indeed. The one example I recall was in Tank Girl, R rated - the copy I rented from Blockbuster had one line blanked out, just as she discovers where exactly the Rippers are hiding out. The normal release has a voiceover line "See hell, go to hell." - in the Blockbuster copy, this line was missing.

There may have been other edits, but that's the one which tripped my memory when watching the laserdisc copy I bought soon afterward.

porsupah··on Neighbor's house alarm triggers when I put my car in reverse
Indeed. Several years ago, I was working on a 2.4GHz device, and we noticed that occasionally, the microwave in the office kitchen would disrupt things. A quick check with a 2.4GHz band spectrum analyser showed what was going on:

https://i.imgur.com/S1Luizd.jpg

The company being as cheap as it was, I simply began using the microwave as a deliberate noise source for testing the device's operation under adverse conditions, placing a few mugs of water in the microwave for a few minutes, and deliberately setting my channel to collide with the microwave.

porsupah··on Reddit's Ad Changes Reduce Your ROI
As a prospective Reddit advertiser, I'm disappointed to learn of this new alteration, as it does seem to dilute my budget considerably.

The ability to target specific subs has multiple benefits:

- the advertiser knows precisely where the ad's appearing. Useful for them and their notion of where it'll be most useful, and indeed, knowing it won't be running anywhere else. Reddit appears to be deliberately diluting this benefit.

- the reader had previously been assured of ads relevant to the sub. As has been noted elsewhere, it's not always welcome for ads from professionally relevant subs to bleed outside the work day. Then there are subs which people might not want ads targeted for them appearing elsewhere - I'm not entirely confident someone who'd visited a sub on the basis of tentatively exploring a possible element of their sexuality, for example, might want that highlighted the next day when visiting some other sub entirely.

porsupah··on 14 People Make 500K Tons of Steel a Year in Austria
And this, surely, is the end game. We're now working on autonomous vehicles; there's no reason to think drivers will be required beyond maybe ten years hence. So, they're on the scrapheap. Store assistants, fast food cooks? Same deal, maybe another few years for legal assurances (hot oil can be unfriendly).

How many professions do you come in contact with who seem unlikely to be candidates for automation?

At some point - and we're unfortunately rather a long way from that societally - we need to take stock, and consider: who, exactly, is all of this for?

Similarly, TRON's CG was only wireframes, which were then cel-painted by hand, as performing that filling by computer would have been too expensive at the time.
porsupah··on There’s a good chance wildlife photos weren’t shot in the wild
Ultimately, if you want to know whether a particular photographer's work is genuinely from the wild, you need to check into their body of work. Ideally, they'll be honest about the use of such animal parks - for the overwhelming majority of cases, though, if they claim the subjects to be wild, they will be.

That's not to say the photos won't have been processed, of course - that's entirely up to individual taste, whether that's casting it to monochrome, or boosting the contrast to bring out the skin texture of an elephant.

In photography circles, parks like those are promoted as a means for enthusiasts to see species they'd otherwise have to travel great distances for - rather like a cageless zoo. It's not something I've engaged in[1], but I can understand the appeal from a hobbyist perspective; and understandably, if you're looking for "wildlife" photography on demand, perhaps for an advertising campaign, you're unlikely to commission someone to attempt to obtain just the right photo out in the wild.

[1] My wildlife focus is primarily rabbits, eg "Momentary":

porsupah··on Reddit’s April Fools’ experiment
Indeed - in /r/furry, we had a sort of accidental affiliation with /r/touhou, though from the looks of things, the size of the sub was sufficient for self-maintenance. That said, our Snoo did wind up sustaining some damage:

porsupah··on Changes to USCIS policy on eligibility criteria for H1B visa
An immigration lawyer's take:

http://immigrationgirl.com/uscis-rescinds-memo-on-h-1b-speci...

She concludes:

"The new memo issued Friday rescinds that old memo and basically reminds officers that they must look at the particular position and its job duties to determine whether it meets the definition of specialty occupation, rather than relying solely on the OOH. I think the main issue with the old memo was that it gave kind of a blanket statement that all programmers should be specialty occupations.

The new memo does not change the rules, it just reminds us that a petitioner must be able to establish that a particular position qualifies as a specialty occupation in order to be eligible for the H-1B visa."

porsupah··on Website builder Wix acquires art community DeviantArt for $36M
Significantly, they've updated that with a section that deserves highlighting here:

"There's been some confusion around wording used TechCrunch's reporting of the DeviantArt and Wix story.

Their article includes: "...Wix will open up DeviantArt’s repository of art and creative community to the Wix platform, giving Wix’s users access to that work to use in their own site building."

Please know that the DeviantArt Submission Policy, Terms of Service and Copyright Policy all remain the same. Deviants continue to own their own works. In the future, there's a possibility Wix might provide opportunities for you to license your work -- only if you want to -- to more people around the world. And, there will be opportunities for Wix users to join DeviantArt and make the community stronger."

porsupah··on Nikon “extraordinary loss” kills DL cameras and slashes jobs
It's worth bearing in mind that the loss is primarily due to their lithography business, rather than imaging:
